00:00Sigourney Weaver shed a few tears at the Venice Film Festival after a reporter suggested her
00:04empowering roles in film could help Kamala Harris become the first female president.
00:10Sigourney Weaver is one of Hollywood's biggest stars and hardly needs an introduction.
00:14She's most well-known for her roles in Avatar, Holes, and, of course, Ellen Ripley in the
00:19Alien film series.
00:21With the next installment of the franchise, Alien Romulus, in theaters now, despite not
00:25having Weaver in it, fans of the actor can't help but reflect on one of her most iconic
00:30roles.
00:31Weaver recently attended a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, as this year
00:35she's receiving the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award.
00:39During the conference, a reporter suggested that Weaver's work representing women in
00:43powerful roles in film, specifically Alien, could have helped make it possible for Kamala
00:48Harris to earn the presidential nomination and maybe even win the race.
00:52After this, Weaver responded emotionally, sharing,
00:55"'To think for one moment that my work would have anything to do with her rise makes
00:59me happy, actually.
01:00Because it's true.
01:01I have so many women who come and thank me.'
01:04Suddenly, I think they had decided somehow that older women could actually play interesting
01:08characters and started writing a lot of older women characters.
01:12Suddenly, we stopped being a joke and a mother-in-law and we started to be real people because actually
01:16a lot of our audience are real people."
