00:00Imam Sadiq took full control of the Islamic university that his father Imam Baghir had
00:10established in Medina.
00:12The Imam brought this university to the height of its prosperity by training thousands of
00:17students.
00:18In this university, the Imam emphasized to his students to document his teachings.
00:24The names of approximately 4,000 of Imam's students who have narrated his teachings have
00:30been recorded in history.
00:32Each one of them recorded many narrations from the Imam and spread them amongst the
00:36Muslims all over the Islamic world.
00:39As a result, the Imam became very well known among the Muslims and many refer to him to
00:44benefit from his knowledge.
00:53The Imam trained many distinguished scientists of his time who were experts in one or more
00:59scientific fields.
01:01They not only spread what they learned from the Imam in his university, but also authored
01:06books and researched in different fields.
01:09The Imam had full trust in the knowledge of these individuals.
01:12He would frequently refer people who wanted to ask him questions or debate with him on
01:17a particular subject to his distinguished companions who were experts in that subject.
01:23Aban ibn Taqlib was one of these scholars whose knowledge was exceptional in Islamic
01:27law, Arabic literature, interpretation of the Quran, and traditions of the Prophet.
01:33Imam Baqir had asked him to sit in the mosque of the Prophet in Medina and answer questions
01:38regarding the Islamic laws.
01:40Aban alone recorded 30,000 narrations from Imam Sadiq.
01:45Muhammad ibn Muslim was another scholar who recorded 16,000 narrations from the Imam and
01:50was known as one of the most knowledgeable scholars amongst the Shias.
01:55Hisham ibn Hakam was another scholar who was a master in Ilm al-Kalam which is the study
02:00of Islamic doctrine that involves defending the Islamic principles against doubters.
02:05It is said that no one could defeat him in a debate despite his young age.
02:10He also authored many books related to the Islamic sciences.
02:14Zohra was another scholar who was an expert in Islamic law.
02:19His narrations from Imam Baqir and Imam Sadiq on various topics of Islamic law are still
02:24available until today.
02:26The majority of authors of the famous 400 Usul books are also the companions of Imam
02:31Sadiq.
02:32These 400 books are the most authentic narrations in the Shia school of thought which were dictated
02:37by the Imam to their companions for documentation.
02:41The narrations from these books were classified by the Shia scholars in the centuries later
02:46and generated the top narration books for the Shia school of thought.
03:08Imam laid down the foundation for all Muslims including non-Shia to benefit from his teachings.
03:13Among them were famous Islamic scholars Abu Hanifa and Malik ibn Anas the founders of
03:18the Hanafi and Maliki schools of thought respectively.
03:22Abu Hanifa was a student of the Imam for two years.
03:25He had said that if it wasn't for those two years I would have perished.
03:29Malik ibn Anas was another student of the Imam in Medina.
03:32He had said that whenever he came to the Imam he would see him fasting, praying or reciting
03:38supplications.
03:39In the decades that followed, Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i the founder of the Shafi'i
03:44school of thought became a prominent student of Malik ibn Anas.
03:48Also later, Ahmad ibn Hanbal the founder of the Hanbali school of thought became a student
03:54of Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i.
03:56Therefore all four schools of thought in the Sunni sect of Islam have benefited from the
04:02Imam's knowledge directly or indirectly and their interpretations of the Islamic law were
04:07influenced by his teachings.
04:09Even today Imam Sadiq is highly regarded in all four Sunni schools of thought.

04:19including Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood, Jami'at Tirmidhi, Muwatta' Malik, Sunan
04:25Ibn Majah and Sunan An-Nasai.
04:28These books are amongst the Kutub al-Sitta which are the primary books of narrations
04:33in the Sunni sect of Islam.
04:35The only book amongst Kutub al-Sitta that has not mentioned any narrations from Imam
04:39Sadiq is Sahih al-Bukhari.
05:05The Imam's teachings were focused on the Islamic sciences however the Muslims also
05:11benefited from the Imam's knowledge in other sciences of the time.
05:15Currently there are many books and written documents available on various sciences that
05:20are attributed to the Imam.
05:22These documents serve as evidence to show the wide extent of knowledge that was spread
05:26by the Imam.

06:03medicine and curing diseases.
06:18The Imam also trained distinguished scholars in these scientific fields.
06:22Jabir ibn Khayyan was Imam's student who is famous for his articles in chemistry though
06:27he was also an expert in the other sciences of his time.
06:31Discoveries of multiple metals and chemical compounds such as nitric acid and hydrochloric
06:36acid as well as several chemical processes such as distillation and crystallization are
06:43attributed to him.
