00:00Onto the second week of La Vuelta 24, Sunday's demonstration from Adam Yates showed that

00:06the race is still very open and that Ben O'Connor will have to have eyes everywhere as he defends

00:11his red jersey.

00:12There are climbs to tackle practically every day until we get to Madrid, so it promises

00:17to be intense.

00:18Every time you reach the second week of a Grand Tour it's like the start of a new race.

00:25Every day we could potentially have a GC battle and an opportunity for the breakaway.

00:29Today is a good one for the break with a tricky climb at the start and a tricky climb at the

00:33end.

00:34It will be very tough but also very tactical.

00:39O'Connor leads by nearly four minutes and looks solid on Sunday.

00:43The Australian is just taking every stage as it comes.

00:46We've got a tricky day today, so I'm just excited to get the racing done, tick each

00:52day off as it comes and see how long this story can last.

00:57What would be the ideal scenario of today's stage for you?

01:02Ideally no-one in the top ten getting too far in front in the breakaway and that's about

01:08it to be honest.

01:10Primoz Roglic remains O'Connor's biggest threat, but the Slovenian still has a lot of work

01:14to do.

01:15It's just tough from now on, pretty much every stage.

01:19We have to be there, we have to race it and obviously you need good legs to be there at

01:25the end.

01:26How is your back?

01:27Good.

01:28I mean, when I'm resting or doing nothing, really good.

01:32Visma-Lisebaek have had success so far with Wout van Aert, but Sepp Kuss is trailing by

01:36more than eight minutes overall.

01:40Probably every stage is a stage for Wout van Aert.

01:44It can be still a stage for Sepp Kuss and it can also be a stage for someone else.

01:49What is the best possible result for Sepp on GC?

01:52We have to see if he can go in the breakaway like Adam did or how Richard Carapaz did and

01:59then jumping a few places up.

02:01For sure top ten is available for him.

02:08La Vuelta resumes in Galicia with a punchy outing of 160k between Pontiarius and Bayona.

02:15The early Alta de Fonfria could help a breakaway to form before a succession of three climbs

02:20later in the stage.

02:21The final hike up the Alta de Mugas is 10km at 6% before a downhill sweep to the finish

02:27line.

02:38There was a lively start to the day's action with lots of riders trying but failing to

02:43establish an early breakaway.

02:45Even on the first climb it all kept coming back together and the relentless pace saw

02:49lots of riders going backwards.

02:54One man was clearly on a mission though and that was Wout van Aert.

02:58After a host of attempts the Belgian got a small gap with Marc Soler and William Junier

03:02Le Serre.

03:03They reached the summit a few seconds clear of the peloton.

03:08Two more men joined them after countering from the bunch, Quentin Pache and Joeri Holman.

03:13The average speed and eye-watering 44kmh in spite of the climb.

03:18The peloton were still close to the leaders though and the attacks just kept coming.

03:28The five leaders were still within striking distance when Alessandro De Marchi made his

03:32move but the Italian found himself unable to bridge the gap.

03:36At the same time the GC teams decided they were finally happy with this move and they

03:41shut things down so the gap quickly yawned out to more than five minutes.

03:46The Catalan AG2R now hitting the front for O'Connor.

03:50Everyone meanwhile seemed happier with the weather.

03:53After battling through the heat of Andalusia and temperatures of over 35 degrees it was

03:57around 24 degrees today in Galicia.

04:07The peloton easing off again as the gap crept up to over six minutes on the Alto de Villachan,

04:12the five escapees set to battle for the stage honours.

04:16They certainly posed no threat on GC with the highest place rider Pache some 34 minutes

04:21down on O'Connor.

04:23Red Bull bore a Hansgrohe briefly driving the peloton with Lennart van Eert felt in

04:27a bit of trouble but the young Belgian did manage to scramble his way back.

04:32There wasn't much to report on the next climb and the leaders were soon approaching

04:39the intermediate sprint.

04:41Van Aert was obviously targeting the 20 points for the green jersey but he was also starting

04:45to think about the stage win as well.

04:49Wout van Aert wants to try and take the 20 points here by a clear margin.

04:57Well this is a bit of a sneaky move from Wout van Aert.

05:00Everyone just expected him to go for the intermediate sprint into Abaroca and take the 20 points

05:05available towards that green jersey that he has on his shoulders.

05:09He extends his lead, he's now got 223 points in that green jersey classification.

05:16Only Pache had enough power to follow van Aert onto the final climb.

05:20Solaire and Le Serre fighting to close the gap with Holman dropping back once the road

05:24began to rise.

05:27While van Aert and Pache were collaborating nicely that wasn't really the case for Solaire

05:31and Le Serre.

05:32The young Belgian ended up attacking the Spaniard and going solo but it didn't look like he

05:37would have the legs to catch the two leaders.

05:40Apart from one minor acceleration from EF Education Easypost it was quiet back in the

05:44peloton.

05:45Victory here was going to van Aert or Pache with the Belgian the clear favourite.

05:50They were soon over the climb and descending into Bayona.

05:54Solaire and Holman would catch Le Serre and fight for the minor places but all eyes were

05:58on van Aert versus Pache.

06:04Constantin Pache is being forced to lead it out.

06:07He wanted to try something from a long, long way.

06:10He seems confident in his abilities.

06:12He's going to hold the right hand side of the road but immediately with a big acceleration

06:16it's Wout van Aert who comes into Bayona.

06:20One bike length opens up to two and Wout van Aert is going to make it three victories

06:25in this year's Vuelta a España.

06:2712 Grand Tour stages to his Palmares and after 134 kilometres in the breakaway it's

06:34Wout van Aert who wins for Visma-Lisebike.

06:39Van Aert completing his hat-trick at this Vuelta with his family watching on, the 29-year-olds

06:44looking on supreme form as he builds towards the World Championships next month.

06:48These performances are reminiscent of his previous showings at the Tour de France, notably

06:52in 2021 and 22.

06:55He is now just one shy of 50 career victories and will no doubt have opportunities to hit

07:00that milestone between now and Madrid.

07:02Attila Valter this morning said any stage is a Wout van Aert stage.

07:09That's a bit exaggerated I would say but it's nice in a race like this that you have a versatile

07:17profile and when I end up in a situation like this I always have a chance and it's

07:26a very cool victory.

07:31Van Aert easily seeing off Pache to take his fifth win of the season.

07:35Soler led in the chases at two minutes and one second with the peloton at five minutes

07:40thirty-one.

07:45No changes at the top of the GC with O'Connor still three minutes fifty-three clear of Roglic.

07:50Giulio Ciccone abandoned due to a knee injury sustained in a crash on the weekend.

07:56With a maximum haul of 40 points today, van Aert now has a big lead in green.

08:00He is 81 clear of Caden Groves with no flat sprint stages remaining.

08:06Adam Yates nearly lost a polka dot jersey today to van Aert.

08:09They're level on points but Yates remains ahead because he's been over bigger climbs.

08:15And Florian Lippovitz is still our best young rider ahead of Carlos Rodriguez and Matias

08:20Schielmosa.

08:23Tomorrow's stage is another unpredictable one with four climbs including a steep final

08:28hike that could see some GC action or perhaps another win for van Aert.
