00:00National Dog Day, held annually on August 26th, is a great time to start researching
00:05whether or not you should adopt a furry, four-legged bestie.
00:09But which is the perfect pup for you, experts say it depends.
00:12But here are 2024E's top dog breeds.
00:15Rover.com, an online market for pet care, teamed up with Ancestry to find out which
00:20dog breeds are the most popular across the country and what their personalities are like.
00:25It's the sixth time they've conducted the survey.
00:28These are our companions from the time we learn to crawl to the time we take our last
00:32breaths.
00:33So it's no wonder that around 65.1 million Americans own a dog, making them the most
00:38popular pet in the country, according to Forbes.
00:42Almost anyone who has had a dog knows the joy of getting home at the end of the day
00:46and being greeted by a wild wagging tail.
00:49Phil Tedeschi, a professor at the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of
00:53Denver who runs a program focused on human-animal connection, told USA Today.
00:58In July 2024, Rover surveyed 1,000 U.S. pet parents to learn more about which dog breeds
01:04are popular and what personality traits each breed is likely to show.
01:08Around 88% of the dog parents that were surveyed said understanding their dog's mix of breeds
01:13would help them better understand their dogs.
01:16And 56% said knowing more about their dog's genetic makeup would help strengthen their
01:21bond.
01:22Another 62% of those surveyed said that breed was also an important factor for them when
01:27considering which dog to add to their family, while a dog's breed is important when deciding
01:32if a dog would fit into a person's lifestyle.
01:35It's also essential to get to know the dog's personality, Tedeschi, who is also a Rover
01:40Pet People panelist, said.
01:42The breed can give you clues as to what environments dogs thrive in, but it doesn't give you the
01:47whole picture.
01:48It's essential to get to know the individual dog and their personality instead of stereotyping
01:53them by their breed.
01:55Yes, dog breeds are unique from one another, but individual dogs have their own characteristics
02:00and needs.
02:01So often, these are companions that we spend some of our most high-quality recreational
02:06time, said Tedeschi.
02:07This bonding time often takes place when people are just able to relax.
02:12Building a relationship with a companion animal, whether it be a dog or cat, whose company
02:17you enjoy, is responsive to your moods and emotions, and that helps you feel a connection
02:22plays out frequently in the human-animal connection.
02:25There's this level of connection, social support, and enthusiasm that really kind of transcends
02:30or maybe even defines healthy relationships, said Tedeschi.
02:34And people really noticed this during the pandemic when people who were feeling isolated
02:38and had lost aspects of their social support system were really finding these connections
02:43to be very important.
02:44There are obstacles dog parents might have to overcome, and separation anxiety is one
02:49of them.
02:50Around 42% of dog parents said their dog's separation anxiety is a challenge.
