Have you ever wondered how your fridge keeps your food fresh and cold?
00:03
Today, I will explain you workings of a refrigerator in easy way.
00:07
The heart of the fridge is the refrigeration cycle.
00:11
Inside the fridge, there's a closed cycle compression process that involves five
00:16
main components, a compressor, condenser, expansion device, evaporator, and refrigerant.
00:25
It's a fluid that circulates the system and is used because of its low boiling point.
00:31
It repeatedly turns from a vapor to a liquid and back again, moving heat from the food
00:37
to the external environment. The cycle begins with the refrigerant entering the compressor
00:43
as a low pressure, low temperature vapor. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant
00:49
and it exits as a high pressure, high temperature vapor.
00:53
Next, the refrigerant moves through the condenser coil, typically made of copper,
00:58
where it condenses into a liquid and releases heat to the environment.
01:03
Aluminum fins increase the contact area of the outside air and increase the heat transfer.
01:09
From there, the refrigerant flows through a filter dryer to remove any contaminants and moisture.
01:15
It then enters the expansion device, which is often a thin capillary tube.
01:20
As the refrigerant flows through the capillary tube, its pressure drops significantly and it
01:26
enters the evaporator section as a low pressure, low temperature liquid vapor mixture.
01:32
The evaporator coil is located inside the refrigerator and the heat from the air inside
01:39
is absorbed into the refrigerant. This cools the air inside the fridge.
01:44
During this process, the refrigerant is boiled and evaporates,
01:48
exiting the evaporator as a low pressure, low temperature vapor.
01:52
It then returns to the compressor and the cycle starts again.
01:56
Next, let's take a look at the electrical system that powers the refrigerator.
02:00
The power outlet supplies single phase AC power to the fridge.
02:05
The live wire connects to the door switch,
02:07
turning the fridge light on when the door is open and off when it's closed.
02:12
The thermostat is also connected to the live wire and controls the temperature inside the
02:16
refrigerator. If the temperature goes above or below a certain value,
02:21
the compressor is switched on or off via a relay.
