00:00As night falls in Dhaka, the students take control of the streets.

00:07They are patrolling their neighborhood to protect the residents from robberies.

00:13They are telling residents to be vigilant, but also assuring them that they are on guard to protect them.

00:24Police are not present here on the field.

00:26So we are acting their rule to confirm our safety and our society's people.

00:33Study is important for us, but to protect our people and protect our societies,

00:40it is one of the most important work, also one of the most important work for us.

00:48The presence of the students on the streets brings a big sigh of relief for the residents.

00:55The autocratic Sheikh Hassan Gobind fled away.

00:58She not fled alone, she fled with her police.

01:02As she used police as their political workers, police didn't have the guts to stay there so far.

01:08So what happened there, you know, that law and order broke down actually.

01:12We felt insecure and then the students came again on the road.

01:17They ensure our security. So far police is not there.

01:20So to maintain the law and order, they are, you know, performing their role.

01:26And hopefully police will come and join the work and the law order will come again, inshallah.

01:32Police are largely absent in Bangladesh.

01:35Students and activists have taken up many of their roles.

01:40They were accused of shooting to kill protesting students.

01:44Some 300 people, many of them with bullet wounds, were killed in the days preceding the fall of Hasina's government.

01:53The angry protesters retaliated with attacks on police.

01:59Police stations like this one in Dhaka were burned down.

02:04In some instances, police officers were killed.

02:08This has instilled a fear in police and many of them are not showing up for work.

02:15We had to take some actions that weren't against the people, the common people.

02:20So the people weren't against us.

02:22And they actually destroyed a lot of different kinds of establishments.

02:30And they destroyed our police vehicles.

02:35We have witnessed dead casualties of many common people, even some police personnel.

02:43So the total policing activities actually had gone to a halt.

02:51We are again starting all types of professional activities

02:57and tried to help those people regain their confidence on police.

03:05Developing trust between the police and the Bangladeshi people is one of the toughest challenges for the interim government.

03:13Until that happens, many are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their country does not fall into darkness.
