भाद्रपद मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को हर साल जन्माष्टमी का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। इसी तिथि में भगवान श्री कृष्ण, माता देवकी के गर्भ से अवतरित हुए थे। कंस के अत्याचारों से पृथ्वी वासियों को बचाने के लिए जन्माष्टमी के दिन भगवान विष्णु ने श्रीकृष्ण के रूप में आठवां अवतार लिया था।

भगवान कृष्ण का जन्म रात में हुआ था, इसलिए ज्यादातर जगहों पर बाल गोपाल की पूजा रात में ही की जाती है। कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी पर पूजा के दौरान खीरे का प्रयोग किया जाता है। खीरे के बिना कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी का त्योहार अधूरा माना जाता है। धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार लड्डू गोपाल का जन्म खीरे से होता है। इस दिन भक्त लड्डू गोपाल के पास खीरा रखते हैं और रात के 12 बजे श्री कृष्ण के जन्मोत्सव पर इस खीरे को डंठल से अलग कर देते हैं। सिक्के से डंठल और खीरे से अलग किया जाता है, इसे कान्हा जी के माता देवकी से अलग होने का प्रतीक भी माना जाता है।
