00:00A new study says replacing plastics with biodegradable alternatives would lead to significant carbon
00:08emissions reductions.
00:10As we know, plastic pollution and its impact on the environment have become a critical
00:14global issue in recent years.
00:17Research teams analyzed 1,000 traditional plastic products, like plastic bags, lunch
00:22boxes and cups, and compared them to biodegradable plastic products.
00:27Researchers found that the biodegradable plastic emitted 62 percent less carbon than
00:32its traditional alternative.
00:34The study also found that the optimal waste disposal methods for biodegradable plastic
00:39products were composting and aerobic digestion, since they're better for the environment.
00:43However, the high cost of biodegradable plastic products poses a challenge for their widespread
00:49use.
00:50Experts say more research is needed to make a production technologies and waste disposal
00:55that's less expensive to encourage adoption of biodegradable plastic.
