00:00This was Kamala Harris' attempt to turn a corner, to tackle one of the Democratic Party's
00:09most vulnerable issues, the economy, head-on.
00:12If you want to know who someone cares about, look who they fight for.
00:18Drawing on her own humble origins, she spoke of working at McDonald's and the pride her
00:23mother felt when they bought their first home after years of renting.
00:28Harris said if elected president, she would help qualified first-time homebuyers do the
00:33same.
00:34My administration will provide first-time homebuyers with $25,000 to help with the down
00:42payment on a new home.
00:45This was perhaps the most ambitious of the many campaign promises Harris made on Friday.
00:51Another, to ban grocery companies from price-gouging, and to crack down on the meat industry that
00:57has seen record profits as it raised consumer prices.
01:02Harris tried to draw a contrast with Donald Trump, accusing him of siding with billionaires
01:07and wanting to impose tariffs that would raise prices further.
01:11A Trump tax on gas, a Trump tax on food, a Trump tax on clothing.
01:19The Trump campaign called Harris' proposals a government price-fixing scheme that would
01:23fail.
01:25But they seem to have resonated with voters, like Danielle Carey, a server at a Raleigh
01:30restaurant.
01:32She says she likes Harris' plan to help homebuyers and renters.
01:36It would be a tremendous help.
01:37It would mean an absolutely lot to me.
01:38It's very hard.
01:39I've been searching everywhere and just the waiting list for housing right now is six
01:42months to a year to even get into individual ones.
01:45But she's skeptical about an earlier Harris proposal, also supported by Trump, to stop
01:50taxing tips for service workers.
01:53She says that may jeopardize her government benefits after retirement.
01:57I think it will hurt us in the long run, to be honest.
02:00I'm not really a fan of it.
02:03But it was pure enthusiasm inside the Harris campaign event.
02:08Polls show Harris leads Trump by four points nationally and is ahead in key swing states.
02:14She is riding the momentum that we have seen since last month when she jumped into this
02:19race.
02:20But still, there are many weeks ahead before Election Day.
02:23And her challenge now, facing Kamala Harris, is to continue this momentum forward.
