00:00A Kuala Lumpur City Hall enforcement assistant was fined 13,000 ringgit by the Sessions Court
00:07on Thursday after pleading guilty to five counts of accepting 1,200 ringgit in bribes
00:13to protect premises operating under Alibaba licences.
00:17Judge Azura Alwi imposed the fine on 42-year-old Shahrul Rizamat Yusuf with a default sentence
00:23of 21 months in jail for accepting the said money from an individual connected to his
00:29official duties.
00:31The offences took place at the Selayang Market between 5pm and midnight from December 2022
00:37to June 2023.
00:40Shahrul was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up
00:45to two years in prison, a fine or both upon conviction.
00:50Deputy Public Prosecutor Irna Juliay Zamaras requested the court to impose a deterrent
00:56sentence, arguing that Shahrul's actions had tarnished both City Hall's image and
01:01his own reputation.
01:03In mitigation, Shahrul, who was unrepresented, told the court that he has a family to support
01:09and his wife suffers from a urinary tract infection.
01:13Meanwhile, two other DBKL enforcement assistants, 28-year-old Mohammad Shawal Riaz Khan Jawhar
01:20and 45-year-old Amran Matt Dali, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Susannah
01:25Hussain to similar charges.
01:28Mohammad Shawal Riaz Khan faces 11 counts of receiving a total of 4,800 ringgit, while
01:34Amran is accused of accepting 100 ringgit from the same individual.
01:39The offences allegedly occurred at the same location between October 2022 and August 2023.
01:48Susannah set bail at 5,000 ringgit for Amran and 6,000 ringgit for Mohammad Shawal Riaz
01:54Khan, with one surety each.
01:57They were also ordered to surrender their passports and report to the Kuala Lumpur Malaysian
02:02Anti-Corruption Commission office once a month, pending the outcome of their cases.
02:08The court set Amran's case for mention on September 18, with Mohammad Shawal Riaz Khan's
02:13case set for the following day.
