00:00
Police in New Zealand are racing to trace sweets containing potentially lethal doses of methamphetamine
00:07
after they were given out by a charity in Auckland.
00:10
Up to 400 people may have received the candies from Auckland City Mission as part of a food parcel.
00:16
At least three people, including a child, needed medical attention after tasting the candy.
00:22
The charity says the sweets were donated anonymously by a member of the public in a sealed retail package.
00:29
Police say there was no suggestion of wrongdoing by the charity,
00:33
but believe the candies were the by-product of an international drug trafficking operation.
00:39
Forensic testing has been carried out with one of the lollies,
00:42
and you heard earlier today that some other testing by other agencies has been carried out also already
00:49
with the confirmation that it is methamphetamine.
00:53
Police are treating these lollies as fully contaminated until we can prove otherwise.
00:59
It is vital they are taken out of circulation as soon as possible.
01:04
We are aware of three people that have sought medical assistance as a result.
01:10
None are currently in hospital.
