I'm Conway Gaines reporting from the New York Stock Exchange.
00:02
Here's what we're watching on the street today.
00:04
There is an upbeat tone on Wall Street
00:07
thanks to signs of a resilient economy.
00:09
July retail sales blew past expectations with a 1% jump.
00:14
Weekly jobless claims rose by 227,000,
00:17
which was below forecast.
00:19
Meanwhile, at Walmart, second quarter sales
00:22
saw a stronger than anticipated rise of 5%,
00:25
and earnings were better than expected as well.
00:28
The world's largest retailer lifted 2024 guidance
00:31
for the second time this year.
00:34
In other news, a massive data breach
00:36
involving the social security number of every American
00:39
may mean all of our information is
00:41
on sale to the highest bidder.
00:43
According to the Los Angeles Times,
00:45
a person claiming to be a member of hacking group USDOD
00:49
is offering a treasure trove of stolen personal data taken
00:53
from 2.9 billion people.
00:55
The highly personal information includes social security
00:58
numbers, full names, addresses, date of births,
01:01
and phone numbers.
01:03
Media outlets are trying to verify
01:05
the veracity of the claim.
01:06
A class action lawsuit reveals the data
01:09
was stolen from National Public Data,
01:11
according to claims made in April by USDOD.
01:15
National Public Data collects and stores
01:17
that information to aid in the completion of background
01:20
checks.
01:21
National Public Data has not formally admitted to the breach
01:24
but told the Los Angeles Times that it, quote,
01:26
purged the entire database as a whole of any and all entries
01:31
and claimed to have deleted any, quote, non-public information.
01:35
That'll do it for your daily briefing from the New York
01:37
Stock Exchange.
