00:00WOO!
00:08HA!
00:18Yeah!
00:22What's his deal?
00:23We don't know. We just try to avoid him.
00:25He's a homeschooled kid.
00:28Oh.
00:29Hi, I'm Bryson, and I was a homeschooled kid, and-
00:32That explains a lot.
00:34How did I not see it earlier?
00:36See? Told ya.
00:39Hey, rude! There's such an unfair stigma against homeschooled kids.
00:43Everyone just thinks we're weird and cringe.
00:46But most homeschooled kids grow up to be well-adjusted members of society,
00:50and we're also usually smarter than average.
00:52Usually.
00:53Weird homeschooled kid is a reductionist stereotype
00:57that puts people like me in little boxes.
01:00You did pick the right box, though, I will admit.
01:02Looks like I do fit the stereotype there.
01:04Add it to the list right under
01:06dumb blonde.
01:07I was homeschooled until the 6th grade,
01:09and in all honesty, it was a great fit for me.
01:12According to this personality test I took,
01:14I am 96% introverted,
01:17so the calm of my home was a much better learning environment for me.
01:20My mom even had me try public elementary school,
01:23and I really didn't like it.
01:25Most crowds of people just inflict psychic damage on me or something.
01:32I'm pretty shy when getting to know people,
01:34and then all of a sudden, boom!
01:36I become the silliest goose of all time.
01:38You can tell how comfortable I am around you
01:41based on how annoying I'm being.
01:43There's a direct correlation there.
01:45Because of this, I've always had a small but very close circle of friends
01:49that I really connect well with.
01:51But when I was young, I didn't know how to make friends,
01:53so I was given a pre-packaged, parent-approved circle of friends
01:57because our moms were friends,
01:59and they'd get together and let us rugrats play.
02:01Hey guys, let's pretend we're wolves!
02:03Yeah!
02:08Luckily, I grew out of this.
02:10Unlike some of you.
02:12My mom did a great job teaching me.
02:14She made learning fun with field trips and games,
02:17and the one-on-one teaching worked very well for me.
02:19I couldn't do what she did.
02:21I'm horrified by how quickly my future kid's math homework will be beyond my knowledge.
02:26Instead of experiencing the rite of passage of crying at the kitchen table
02:30as their dad tries to help them with their math assignment,
02:32they'll have the unique experience of crying WITH their dad about the math assignment.
02:37What is seven times six?
02:39I'm genuinely asking! I don't know what it is!
02:42I don't know!
02:47Another thing that amazes me about my mom
02:49is that whenever we had to move,
02:50she would plan these amazing cross-country road trips and make a vacation of it.
02:54We saw Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, the Liberty Bell, Four Corners,
02:58Redwood National Parks, and all kinds of fun stuff.
03:01I can't imagine planning a big trip like that while raising five kids,
03:05teaching them how to read and do math,
03:07feeding them, and keeping them from fighting.
03:09And to make things worse, she didn't even have GPS!
03:12She had to print out directions from MapQuest
03:15and just pray that she wouldn't make a wrong turn and get lost.
03:18I could not have survived that.
03:20If there isn't a blue line showing me exactly where I need to go,
03:23I simply won't make it to my destination.
03:32People often think that homeschooled kids are really good at math and science,
03:36but really bad at social interaction.
03:38Unfortunately, I'm just bad at both of them.
03:41And I know I'm not the only one who feels inadequate
03:44watching those documentaries about gifted kids.
03:46They're all like,
03:47At age 2, he was already speaking English and Spanish fluently.
03:50By age 6, he already graduated high school valedictorian.
03:54And by age 10, he had a doctorate in neuroscience and astrophysics.
03:58And just last month, he earned a Nobel Prize.
04:01If someone made a documentary about me, it would be more like,
04:04At age 2, he finally learned to walk.
04:07By age 6, he learned how to not spill chocolate milk.
04:10And by age 10, he was already drawing silly little pictures.
04:14The only time I remember being good at something in real school
04:17was a geography test,
04:19because my mom taught me a handy song to remember all 50 states.
04:22And I was also good at Punnett Squares.
04:24So, if both your parents have the AB positive blood type,
04:28you having the O negative blood type doesn't make sense.
04:31This means either you have a mutated gene,
04:33or your dad isn't really your dad.
04:37I may be a weird homeschool kid, but that comes with advantages.
04:41For example, could a normal person make this?
04:44Introducing the hamburger plush. Get it?
04:47And the ham with hair plush.
04:49I had so much fun seeing these ideas come to life in such high quality.
04:52And while you're checking them out,
04:54don't forget to grab your very own Hamination sketchbook.
04:57It's got some sketches of mine in there to get your creative juices flowing.
05:00And look what happens when you flip through the corner of the pages.
05:03Amazing.
05:04Use the link in the description to check them all out.
05:06Spending more time at home definitely helped develop my creativity.
05:10I'm an imaginative kid by nature,
05:12but having art supplies, books, and toys
05:14while having access to a big backyard
05:16definitely nurtured my imagination.
05:18I seriously used to go outside
05:20and just vividly hallucinate that I was on a magical adventure.
05:23And when my friends came over to play,
05:25we would get on the trampoline and one of them would say,
05:27pretend the trampoline is a spaceship and that we're astronauts.
05:30And so far as I was concerned, it was real.
05:34All right, cadets.
05:36Today we're going to be doing hyperspace training.
05:38Be sure to follow all protocols before charting a course.
05:41Cadet Josh, take the wheel.
05:43Okay, I'll take us to the Stuffed Animal Galaxy.
05:46Boop.
05:47You fool, we can't get to the Stuffed Animal Galaxy directly.
05:50We'll have to make a detour in the Petting Zoo Galaxy
05:52to avoid the Cookie Crumb Asteroid Belt.
05:54If we go straight there, the asteroids will destroy the ship.
05:57The controls are jammed. I can't turn it off.
05:59We're going to crash.
06:00Everyone, get to an escape pod.
06:03Access denied.
06:04The escape pods are locked. It's too late.
06:06You fool, you've killed us all.
06:10No!
06:14Kids, you okay?
06:16Can't you see that the spaceship exploded and we're dead now, Mom?
06:19Oh, that's nice.
06:21But my imagination did not stop there.
06:24I used to grab a bowl from the kitchen,
06:26I used to grab a bowl from the kitchen,
06:28go outside, gather an assortment of nature's finest materials into a bowl.
06:32Grass, leaves, herbs, berries, you name it.
06:35And I would pretend I was brewing a magical potion.
06:38Mom, drink this. It'll turn you into a giraffe.
06:40No thanks. I'll just stick with my sandwich.
06:43Fine, I'll drink it.
06:45Bryson, don't.
06:48Wow, it really worked.
06:50It really worked.
06:56Having a powerful imagination was a good thing in many ways,
06:59but this also meant that I was scared very easily.
07:02Taking the trash out in the dark felt like a life or death experience.
07:05I was convinced that an evil clown or alien would kill me
07:08if I didn't do it as fast as I could.
07:10And of course, when I turned out the last light in the house,
07:13I had to run to my room as fast as I could
07:15so that a shadow demon wouldn't catch me.
07:17Even as an adult, I avoid horror movies.
07:19It's just not worth it to me.
07:21I'd rather be happy and sleep well.
07:23But I wasn't just susceptible to scary things in movies.
07:26I also fell victim to fear-mongering stories
07:29designed to make me more obedient from my parents.
07:32This is Santa.
07:33If you're a good boy, he'll give you a present at Christmas.
07:36Awesome!
07:37And this is the boogeyman.
07:38If you're a bad boy and disobey us,
07:40he'll kill you slowly and painfully.
07:43He'll violently rip your arms off
07:45and use them to bash your head in.
07:50My dad really told me
07:52that if I played too many games on the GameCube,
07:54that it would take over my mind
07:56and I'd never be able to stop playing.
07:58This scared me to my core,
08:00and it's the reason I didn't start playing a lot of video games
08:03until I was 14.
08:04But there is something to be said
08:06about how good it was for me to play outside all the time.
08:08I am grateful that I didn't fry all my dopamine receptors
08:11with an iPad at age 5.
08:13Instead, I spent my time in glorious nature eating dirt.
08:17Having fictional fears that never came true was one thing,
08:20but even the real-life stuff that I was scared of never came true.
08:23I honestly thought I would be on fire way more than zero times.
08:28What's the point of knowing stop, drop, and roll
08:30if I never get to use it?
08:32Quicksand, tornadoes, the Bermuda Triangle,
08:36and piranhas haven't been an issue either.
08:38What I should have been scared of was housing prices and taxes.
08:42No one warned me about that.
08:44When I was 5, I was wasting my time watching Thomas the Tank Engine
08:47when I should have been investing in real estate.
08:49I probably could have purchased this house
08:51for six Lincoln Logs and a stick of gum,
08:53but now it costs $2 million.
08:55I'm such an idiot.
08:56But I digress.
08:57Plus, I'm not dead yet.
08:59The quicksand and tornadoes still have a chance to get me.
09:02While at school,
09:04my house,
09:05my teacher,
09:07my mom,
09:08would give me riding lessons.
09:10My teacher,
09:12my mom,
09:13would give me riding assignments.
09:15One of these assignments requested that I write a sentence
09:17with at least 50 letters in it.
09:19But I decided that was too hard.
09:21So to make it easier on myself,
09:23I wrote this.
09:25Look, Mom, it has 50 letters, just like you said.
09:27Even then, I was such a creative problem solver.
09:30But for some reason, my mom called it cheating.
09:33My mom even sent me to this art class
09:35at this lady's house with my friends.
09:37And she gave us all kinds of fun projects
09:39like papier-mâché, watercolors, and collages, etc.
09:43I'm so glad I developed a love of art at such a young age
09:46because art is such an amazingly fulfilling hobby
09:49and I'm so lucky to be able to do it as a job.
09:51And now I have an amazing superpower.
09:54I can imagine anything I want and make it real by drawing it.
09:57See?
09:58But one of my art projects backfired badly.
10:01I decided that the next time I visited my friends
10:04that I wanted us all to pretend that we were Sonic characters.
10:07My brother Brody had shown me how to draw Sonic,
10:10so I drew a bunch of Sonics with different props and different colors.
10:13I basically drew a bunch of Sonic OCs.
10:16Do not steal.
10:17And I wanted to staple the papers together into a book
10:20so that I could bring it to my friend's house
10:22and we could all pick which one we wanted to pretend to be.
10:25I grabbed the stapler and...
10:30I stapled it directly onto my thumb.
10:33And at that moment, I finally understood
10:35why cartoon injuries were animated like this.
10:37Because that's how it felt.
10:39My finger has a heartbeat.
10:41Like I said earlier, it was fun to play with the other homeschooled kids,
10:44but a frustrating part was that I was usually the one
10:48to pitch the game that we should play next.
10:50And it usually went something like this.
10:52How about we play Tag?
10:53No.
10:54How about we play Wizards?
10:55No.
10:56How about we play Hide and Go Seek?
10:58I'll only play if Jenna plays.
11:00I'll only play if Rachel plays.
11:02I'll only play if Josh plays.
11:04Please just say yes, Josh.
11:05Everything is riding on you.
11:08I don't want to play.
11:10But then, it was time to move again.
11:12I said goodbye to my friends.
11:14We did another cross-country road trip
11:16and arrived at our new house in California.
11:18I made some new friends in the neighborhood
11:20and it was time for me to take on public school.
11:23And I hated it.
11:24But it's okay to hate things.
11:26It builds character.
11:27Plus, my grades were really good if we're going by golf rules.
11:30And having my friends with me made it a lot easier.
11:32And now, I'm a very well-rounded, well-adjusted,
11:36socially-adept young man.
11:45Yeah, me and my cousin were hanging out
11:47and, you know, we built a Lego set the other day.
11:51You like Lego?
11:52I love Legos.
11:53Did you know that Lego was invented in 1932 in Denmark
11:55by a man named Ole Kirk Christiansen?
11:57Originally, they were just wooden toys,
11:58but eventually, they started making interlocking plastic bricks
12:00to create a system in which all their toys could be linked together.
12:02Despite many hardships, including their factory burning down,
12:04Ole and his family persevered and continued to manufacture
12:06the unique brick system.
12:07Then, in 1978, the Lego minifigure as we know it was created.
12:10Minifigures are a high-value collector's item.
12:12In fact, a recent study showed that buying Lego sets
12:14was a better investment than the stock market
12:16because of how well they hold their value.
12:17This means that buying and building Lego sets
12:19isn't just a fun hobby.
12:20It's a smart way to use your money.
12:22Guys, thanks for watching.
12:24Don't forget to check out those new plushies
12:26and the sketchbook before you go.
12:28Thanks to my amazing team, as always,
12:30for their fabulous artistic skills.
12:32Go show them some love.
12:33While you're in the description,
12:34consider supporting the channel on Patreon
12:36for behind-the-scenes looks into the video creation process.
12:39Anyway, being homeschooled was cool, I guess.
12:41My mom did a much better job of it than I would have,
12:44and I did ultimately graduate high school, barely,
12:47and then drop out of college.
12:48Let's change the subject.
12:49Anyways, don't forget to unsubscribe
12:51and hit that dislike button
12:52and share the video with no one.
12:54Yeah, I said it.
12:55Didn't see that one coming, did you?
12:57I'm unpredictable like that.
12:58You never know when I'm gonna...
12:59Ha!
