00:00Types of solar eclipses
00:01There are three types of solar eclipses, total, partial, and annular.
00:06A total eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun.
00:10A partial eclipse happens when only part of the sun is obscured,
00:14and an annular eclipse occurs when the moon covers the center of the sun,
00:18leaving a ring-like appearance.
00:20Frequency
00:21Solar eclipses happen at least twice a year,
00:24but they can occur up to five times in a year,
00:27which is rare.
00:28Path of totality
00:30During a total solar eclipse, the path of totality is the narrow,
00:34path across the Earth, where the total eclipse is visible.
00:38This path is usually about 10,000 miles long but only about 100 miles wide.
00:44Duration
00:45A total solar eclipse can last up to 7.5 minutes,
00:49though most are shorter.
00:51Eclipse glasses
00:52It's crucial to use proper eye protection, such as eclipse glasses,
00:57to view a solar eclipse safely.
00:59Looking directly at the sun can cause serious eye damage to Bayley's beads.
01:03Just before and after totality, observers may see Bayley's beads,
01:09which are spots of sunlight shining through the valleys and mountains on the moon's surface.
