Madrid launches new initiative to keep people entertained in the heat

"Take Shelter in Culture" has been set up by Madrid's city council, and is aimed at tourists and locals alike.

00:05city. Some have to work and others can't afford a vacation.

00:11In Europe, vacation poverty affects 40 million people and heat waves have only made things

00:17worse.

00:19But major cities are increasingly offering options to stay cool and entertained, such

00:25as the Take Shelter in Culture initiative in Madrid.

00:45It's not just aimed at tourists. Some libraries, cinemas and museums offer free guided tours,

00:51discounts or performances during the hottest hours of the day.

01:20The Circulo de Bellas Artes has become the standout climate shelter this summer. Its

01:25ancient ballroom has been transformed into a green oasis.

01:38People are excited, they can work, relax or simply hang out here.

02:31According to the National Statistics Institute, one in three households with children in Spain

02:36cannot afford even a week of vacation.
