Motorway Cops Catching Britain's Speeders S06E07 (Aug 5 2024)
Transcript
00:00It doesn't sound good, does it?
00:07PC Jan Schiemlischer is at a shunt on the busy A19.
00:12Us attending was purely for keeping the gentleman safe.
00:15He was in the central reservation, not in a very good position
00:18and potentially distracting other drivers.
00:21Despite his flashing lights and warning signs...
00:24It's going to be another crash, yeah, I'm telling you.
00:27..more drivers want in on the action.
00:29As you've seen when we've been here,
00:31quite a few near misses from people rubbernecking.
00:34And now, there we go.
00:37See? Just people not watching.
00:41Just park it in there for us, please.
00:44It's just been waiting to happen.
00:51UK police forces have been sent over 100,000 dashcam clips,
00:57exposing the most dangerous drivers on our roads.
01:02All hell has broken loose on our highways.
01:08You on a lesson? At least it wasn't your test.
01:11We join the motorway cops of Northumbria Police...
01:15Shall we gun? Why, yeah, of course we're gunning.
01:19..as they drive criminals of the north-east off the roads...
01:23Crash, crash, crash.
01:25..and put the deadliest drivers behind bars.
01:28Stand still!
01:32Are you going to tell us who you are?
01:34I'm a police officer. What do I look like? I'm in fancy dress.
01:36Do whatever you want. Do you want to arrest me? Do it.
01:38I'll let the dog out on you.
01:40I'm getting a little bit bored of you now.
01:42Jazz, bunch of muppets.
01:44Helping them in their battle with idiots behind the wheel...
01:47..is dashcam.
01:49It's vital evidence...
01:51Does everyone have any dashcam at home?
01:53..and proof that Britain's dumbest drivers...
01:56Bloody idiots.
01:58..are a law unto themselves.
02:01Police 1, criminal nil.
02:11Tonight...
02:12Mate, you seem very flustered.
02:14I'm just tired, that's all, mate, to be fair.
02:16..a driver is up past his bedtime...
02:18Can I answer that? If it's my mum, please, she'll be worrying.
02:22Right, love you, bye.
02:24..a speeder with a cheesy excuse...
02:35The lad's in shock and he's hurt.
02:37..and a collision sees a young boy knocked off his bike.
02:40I'm just going to put this mask on you, OK?
02:42Just breathe completely normally once it's on, all right?
02:45The big question is, has the driver done anything wrong?
02:52WHIRRING
02:58As the UK's sixth-largest force,
03:00Northumbria Police is a well-oiled machine,
03:03but at Follingsby Nick,
03:05the motorway cops run on a different type of fuel.
03:08Want a brew? Yes, please.
03:10Is that a new tattoo?
03:12Well, it's about a year old.
03:14It's just been the winter, I've had it covered over.
03:16Well, I think you're not showing them off because it's new tattoos,
03:19PC's Will Hunter and Martin Anderson
03:22have solved crimes together for years,
03:25but there's always something new to uncover.
03:28Some of them were from years ago,
03:30then I had a bit of a midlife crisis last year
03:32and I decided to get a couple of them all done.
03:34Who's done them for you, though? The bear, no?
03:37No, the little one's got it. He's a better artist than that, actually.
03:40Yeah, I think I've seen him.
03:41No, they're from a proper tattoo shop, paid money for them.
03:43Comes with a fortune.
03:45You should get some. No, no, no.
03:47Nice big sleeve. No, mate.
03:49You wouldn't put bumper stickers on a Porsche, would you?
03:51Thankfully, I'm going through a midlife crisis and buying a motorbike.
03:54I'll stick with that. Right, brew?
03:56Yes, I'll have a quick cup of tea. Brew and then out and about.
03:58Yeah, then we'll get out. Right, let's roll.
04:00No, we'll have a think about your tattoo.
04:14I think it's the best car in the fleet, this one.
04:17It's certainly my favourite.
04:19I've missed it last week and I've been on my training course.
04:22I'll have a quick check round it, make sure it's been looked after while I've been away.
04:26Someone's scuffed my alloys.
04:30I'll take a photograph of this.
04:31I always take a photograph of when someone's scuffed the alloys so I don't get the blame.
04:35I've got to look after these cars. It's our office for the days, isn't it?
04:38Well, or for the night.
04:40Right, we're good to go, I think.
04:47Let battle commence.
04:59Tonight, Martin's on a 12-hour shift patrolling the roads of Sunderland.
05:04I usually hit the wall at about 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning.
05:07My little boy got sent home from school today being sick. He's not been very well.
05:12When I would normally grab a couple of hours sleep before night shift,
05:15I've been playing nurse at home, looking after him.
05:20But yeah, hopefully that's not going to make us too tired.
05:23We need something to keep us going, whether that be coffee or adrenaline or both.
05:38He's quit.
05:41Looked to be quite fast as it's come through the village.
05:47Yeah, it's not hanging about.
05:50Might have seen us now.
05:51Did they catch up here?
05:58I'll bet you I've potentially got a vehicle failing to stop on Silksworth Road.
06:04We're on to Wardenlaw Lane.
06:05I don't know whether it's reacting to the presence of us
06:08or whether it's just driving a little bit erratically anyway.
06:14The bobs have slowed down now.
06:15They'll be aware there's a police car behind them now, aren't they?
06:21Potentially coming to a stop. Stand by.
06:31Just stand still.
06:35What's the crack there?
06:37Is this your car?
06:40Is it?
06:42Can I have a jump in the back of here?
06:43Just because you failed to stop there.
06:46LB, I've got it stopped.
06:47I've got the driver detained. Stand by.
06:51Come in.
06:56You were flying, yeah?
07:00Right.
07:07We've got a car.
07:10Right, it was my car, mate. What's your name?
07:12I've got ID, but I've got my bank card.
07:17Mate, you seem very flustered.
07:18Yeah?
07:19You seem very flustered. Have you took any drugs or anything?
07:21No, no, no, I don't take drugs.
07:23I'm just tired, that's all, mate, to be fair.
07:25I was speeding, I understand.
07:26I put my toe down a bit, I was doing a bit over 40.
07:28That's why I stopped as I understand that.
07:31Sorry, officer, I'm just, like I say, I'm a bit tired and I'm flustered.
07:34I'm just, I'm knackered.
07:36Did you not see the blue lights, like?
07:37I didn't see them, it's got blacked out windows, that's all, mate.
07:40Honestly, I've had a long day, I'm a bit tired.
07:42I was just trying to get home.
07:43I understand if you're going to do this for speeding, that's fair enough,
07:46but I wasn't feeling stopped, it's just a ting at the bottom, that's all.
07:56Will arrives with backup.
07:58Ooh, car's a bit stinky.
08:00And sniffs out why the driver might be a bit jumpy.
08:03I haven't done that.
08:05Oh, there you go.
08:07Cannabis.
08:25Come on, Indians, wait.
08:26Move over, TikTok.
08:29Everyone wants to be an influencer on Britain's roads.
08:37Competing for the most followers.
08:42Showing off with unbelievable filters.
08:49And looking for that shareable moment.
08:54But making a hash tag out of everything.
08:59Just so every post has an impact.
09:10Mate, you seem very flustered.
09:12Eh?
09:13Have you taken any drugs or anything?
09:15No, no, I don't take drugs.
09:16I'm just tired, that's all, mate, to be fair.
09:20Midnight in Sunderland, and Martin's stopped a driver in a hurry,
09:24with something to hide.
09:28Cannabis, yeah, that's down the side.
09:31On the floor, in the driver's pocket.
09:34Right.
09:35OK, mate.
09:36Have you had any cannabis?
09:37No, no, I don't smoke cannabis, I'm just, I'm tired, that's all.
09:41Can you pass a drug swipe, then?
09:42I should do, aye?
09:43You should do.
09:44Well, look, I don't have... Aye?
09:46Right, I'm going to request the specimen's saliva from you.
09:49Right.
09:50Right, you're happy to provide?
09:51Mm-hm.
09:52This'll test if there's a trace of cannabis or cocaine in your system.
09:54Right.
09:55Stick your tongue right out.
09:56Open that wide.
09:58You'd open wider than that in the dentist, wouldn't you?
10:00I know.
10:01I know they're not pleasant, but we need to get a bit on there.
10:06You don't smoke cannabis?
10:07No, not...
10:08No.
10:09No?
10:10I don't know, not really.
10:11Not really?
10:12Well, I smoked some the other day, aye, but...
10:14Aye.
10:16I'm not going to sit and beat about the bush.
10:18Right.
10:19This is test and posit for cannabis.
10:20Right.
10:22I'm arresting you on suspicion of drug driving.
10:24God, I wish I didn't put my toe down there now.
10:26You're further arrested for possession of a controlled substance,
10:29which would be cannabis class B.
10:31I've got to go to the police station.
10:32I've got work in the morning.
10:33You'll be going to the police station?
10:35How long will I be there for?
10:36Who are you texting?
10:37My mam.
10:38Text your mam to let her know, mate, if you're worried.
10:40Have you been locked up before?
10:42Aye, a few times.
10:43PHONE RINGS
10:44Can I answer that?
10:45If it's my mam's place, she'll be worrying.
10:47Hello?
10:48Aye, I'm flunked up.
10:50Because I've come back and the police have stopped us
10:52and I've failed a drugs wipe.
10:55It's less fun than you because you're my mam.
10:57I mean...
10:59What a nightmare.
11:00I know.
11:01The day I just had, I couldn't believe it.
11:03I know.
11:04I didn't stress and didn't worry about just one of them things, mam.
11:07Right now, brother.
11:08See you later, mam, mate.
11:09Didn't worry, right?
11:10Right, love you, bye.
11:25Honestly, it's just the cherry on the top of the day.
11:28I've had a day, honestly.
11:29Been a bad day, like?
11:30Oh, really bad day, to be fair, like.
11:32And it's just getting a lot worse, hasn't it?
11:35Well, tomorrow's a new day.
11:37That's it.
11:38It's a bad day, not a bad life.
11:47Hi, man.
11:50You manage?
11:54Yeah.
12:16So, yeah, a decent little job in the end.
12:18What I always say to people that get locked up for this
12:21is that it could always be a lot worse.
12:23Like, it's obviously a nightmare scenario for you here,
12:25but if you'd had a crash, someone was injured or killed
12:27or something like that, it just opens a big can of worms,
12:30doesn't it, like?
12:33And that little bit of cannabis that he had, which he shouldn't have,
12:36it's been taken from him for disposal.
12:39So, yeah, it's another bad little stop,
12:41considering there wasn't much moving about tonight.
12:54Oh, it's not that heavy.
12:56Ha!
12:58OK, go on, see what else we can get involved in.
13:01See yous later.
13:03It's 8am at Eccle Lane station,
13:06and PC Marianne Hutchison has already had a jump start.
13:10I've had my cup of coffee this morning, so...
13:14..that's a good start of the day.
13:17I tend to go for a little bit of a walk,
13:19That's a good start of the day.
13:21I tend to go for a double coffee, two coffees and then a cup of tea,
13:25just to balance it out a little bit.
13:27And then that'll be all I have today.
13:35I've worked 11 years in the force now.
13:38Unbelievable.
13:39If you want something when you're younger, go out and get it.
13:42And I've always had that sort of determination, that sort of drive.
13:46When I was little, I used to watch The Bill all of the time,
13:49and I absolutely loved it.
13:51So me and my friends used to go out on our bikes.
13:53We used to imagine that these people would run off
13:55and we used to be cycling around like idiots with walkie-talkies,
13:58like, oh, we're catching them on the way.
14:02I used to live on a main road,
14:04and I used to see the police cars going up and down constantly.
14:07And I used to think, I wonder where they're going.
14:09And now, 25 years later, I am in that police car going up and down.
14:14I know what I'm going to, but, yes, it's mad.
14:17Sometimes I've got to pinch myself and think, as if I do what I do.
14:31Headmaster, 3-2. Yeah, go ahead.
14:34We've just witnessed a male jump out a car and beat up a victim.
14:39Males have gone back in the car, they're now making off at high speed.
14:438-9-0-2, put us through it.
14:49So the helicopter is looking for a stolen car for us in the Sunderland area,
14:53but while they've been doing that, the navigator within the helicopter
14:56has caught a male being assaulted in the street by two unknown males.
15:03The National Police Air Service, or NPAS,
15:06has 19 helicopters across England and Wales
15:09and are the eyes in the sky for motorway cops.
15:15In Tyne and Wear, a police chopper has spotted a stolen Fiesta,
15:19wanted by more of Northumbria's motorway cops.
15:22Yeah, we've just got sight on it now. Stand by for location.
15:25It's on the 167 Westbound, and it's just coming off at the first slip.
15:30The driver pulls a sneaky U-turn to throw off ground patrols,
15:34but NPAS are relaying his every move.
15:39Traffic car, keep coming, keep coming. It's coming straight towards you.
15:42A traffic cop attempts to block the car.
15:45Yeah, contact. Tactical contact.
15:47But the manoeuvre fails, and the gloves are off.
15:58The driver becomes more and more reckless.
16:03With patrols closing in, the desperate perp
16:06dives into a maze of backstreets...
16:09It's a left, left, left, and we're backing in.
16:13..and starts a life-size game of Pac-Man.
16:17It's a right, right, right.
16:19Yeah, he's re-stepping back towards Weingrove Road.
16:22He's coming back behind you.
16:24But soon, it's game over.
16:29The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving,
16:32aggravated vehicle taking,
16:34driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
16:38He was jailed for two years and banned from driving for six years.
16:45We've just witnessed a male jump out of a car and beat up the victim.
16:50We're now making off at high speed.
16:528902, put us through it.
16:55Back in Sunderland, a police helicopter has spotted an assault
16:59and is guiding Mary-Anne towards the suspects.
17:02Keep our eye on the offenders at the moment.
17:05Just to confirm, it looks like it's on a dark grey bus
17:08working its way through the estate in South Milton.
17:11There's a lot of units travelling down,
17:13trying to get it boxed in and come to a safe stop.
17:16This is what we're driving for.
17:18This is, like, the exciting stuff.
17:20Take the next right traffic car.
17:22Ahead of Mary-Anne, two patrols have the car in their sights.
17:26Just in front of you, approach the key junction.
17:29In front of you, approach the key junction.
17:36You go front, I'll go back.
17:38Yep.
17:39When you're ready.
17:40Go, go, go.
17:43Move up, move up.
17:45Box on, box on.
17:47Bring it down, bring it down.
17:51I think I'll stop.
17:52Go, go, go.
18:00There was a film. Pop your hands up first.
18:02We'll do all the checks on you.
18:04Is this your car, mate? Aye.
18:08I'll just sit you in the back of the car, mate.
18:10We'll get all the checks.
18:11Have you got any idea what it might be on about?
18:13I tried to find you, but you kept on asking me.
18:15What was all that?
18:16Arguing with my mate off the street the other day.
18:18We're sorting it out ourselves.
18:20We'll just, like, throw it away.
18:22While other officers deal with the driver,
18:25Mary-Anne turns her attention to the passengers.
18:28You all right?
18:29Yeah, yeah, thanks.
18:30You know the police at all?
18:31Yeah.
18:33When was the last time you known the police?
18:35I couldn't hear you.
18:38Bye.
18:40What's wrong?
18:41What's wrong?
18:42Aye.
18:43Nothing.
18:45What's wrong with you, though?
18:47Me, now, why?
18:49No need for you to be agitated at all.
18:53A mile away, officers arrive at the scene.
18:57Officers have also caught up with the alleged victim of the assault.
19:01Ooh.
19:03Is there an update on the level of injury?
19:13You're under arrest on suspicion of assault, OK?
19:19Seemed like you were expecting that.
19:21You had your arms out ready.
19:27You're sitting out for the time being, my mate.
19:58Two seconds, mate. Sorry.
20:13I enjoy my job, and I love it.
20:15When you have got the capability to get the helicopter up to give you a hand,
20:19it's a great feeling.
20:20It's a great feeling.
20:21It's a great feeling.
20:22It's a great feeling.
20:23It's a great feeling.
20:24When you have got the capability to get the helicopter up to give you a hand
20:27and the drones and stuff like that,
20:29whether you're investigating or whether you're on the road to policing,
20:32everyone works as a team in the police.
20:35I thought life as a police officer was going to be out of the bill,
20:38you know, getting the baddies and going to jail and stuff.
20:41But some things don't get wrapped up nicely.
20:43However, it's one thing you know when you're in the police,
20:46and that will always come again.
20:55MUSIC
21:00Given the fact that it's a bit of a sunny day,
21:02the weather is getting warmer,
21:04people start to not concentrate when they're driving.
21:08It's early doors at Eatle Lane, Nick,
21:10and Sergeant Dave Roberts is warming up for a busy shift.
21:17So the day is looking at the A189,
21:20seeing what's going on up there,
21:22because that's a road of interest to us at the minute.
21:24Some activity in the west end of Newcastle,
21:26and wherever the radio takes us, really.
21:29We'll see what happens.
21:42The worst part of this job is you can be driving for hours,
21:45then you'll end up with some form of pursuit that comes to an end.
21:48Then you've got to jump straight out of the car and start running around.
21:51That has got a lot harder, the older I've got.
21:54I'm not as flexible or as agile as I was.
21:57I don't remember ever getting out of a car when I was young and safe,
22:00I was going, ooh, my knees.
22:02But lately that seems to become a thing.
22:04Still catching, but the recovery time is a little bit different
22:07from what it once was.
22:13A child's been knocked off a bike.
22:15He was coming out of school and apparently a car's gone straight into him.
22:19He was floating in the air.
22:21He was wearing a helmet.
22:25541, who else has gone? No trouble.
22:30Just had a report of a child on a pedal bike
22:33that's been knocked off outside of the school by a car.
22:39It's important to get there quickly,
22:41because it may be that we need to rent a first aid.
22:45My eldest son was involved in an accident years ago
22:48and it's absolutely terrifying.
22:50You instantly think the worst.
22:53But it's about looking after somebody else's child,
22:56so we don't know the extent of the injury until we get there.
23:07That'll be the end of the umbrella, then.
23:10Hello there.
23:13Hello, young man.
23:15Are you sore somewhere?
23:19All over your leg.
23:21Don't try and move anything, but can you feel what's going on now?
23:24Yeah? Did you lose consciousness at all?
23:26You didn't.
23:28Is his parents here at all?
23:32Have you rang the ambulance? Have you had a conversation with them?
23:35Have you?
23:37Right. Who's the driver of the car?
23:39That's you, is it? Right. We'll come to that in a second.
23:42I'm going to make a phone call and see if there's an ambulance
23:45going to come and check it out, all right?
23:47And then we'll go from there. Is that OK with you? Yeah?
23:50Awesome. Thank you very much. I'll be back in two seconds.
23:54The lad's in shock. He's hurt.
23:56I'm not an x-ray machine.
23:58I just want to speak to Ambulance Triage and see if they've got an ETA.
24:03Come and check him out.
24:08It's Northumbria Police, just in relation to a pedestrian RTC.
24:12I'm concerned about the potential unseen injuries.
24:15Do you have any kind of ETA for me?
24:20I'm not leaving a child on the side of the road for two to three hours.
24:25I'm going to see if I can get one of our medics to come and check him out.
24:29You've got to get creative with what you've got access to,
24:32and if you can't get the traditional ambulance service,
24:35you've just got to think outside the box a bit.
24:38Are you sure you're all right?
24:40The most important thing now is make sure you're looked after, OK?
24:43You're lying under an umbrella, inside your parker hood, on a sunny day.
24:46It's not the way you thought you'd be at this time of the day, is it?
24:49No.
24:53Hello. All right?
24:58So the firearms team have turned up.
25:01Need to check you out, all right?
25:03Advanced medics, as they are, I've asked for them to assess the young lad.
25:10Just going to put this mask on you, OK?
25:12Just breathe completely normally once it's on, all right?
25:17When you're dealing with a kid who's injured,
25:20all you want to do is to get the kid picked up.
25:22It's enough to be checked, but that's easier said than done.
25:26I hear an ambulance.
25:33SIREN BLARES
25:43Hello. Are you Paul's papa?
25:45Hello.
25:47Hands dropped out before. Breathing rate's been fine. His heart rate's been fine.
25:52Can you wiggle this one for me? Oh, excellent.
25:55I don't think he's got any sort of internal bleeding or anything like that.
25:58Yeah, yeah. Awesome.
26:01Sorry, just want to cross over the road just to leave them to do their thing.
26:08Right now, young lad's in the back of the ambulance.
26:10Paramedics are a bit more settled with his condition, which I'm dead pleased about.
26:14The big question is, has the driver done anything wrong?
26:31Entitled drivers are causing a right royal palaver across the UK.
26:38Kings of the road...
26:42..and queens of the pavement.
26:47Along with their ladies-in-waiting...
26:51..and not-waiting.
26:55Sailing past their subjects with a regal wave.
27:01Pains dropped out before. Breathing rate's been fine.
27:04His heart rate's been fine. Yeah.
27:10Sorry, just want to cross over the road just to leave them to do their thing.
27:15In Gateshead, Sergeant Dave Roberts is dealing with a collision
27:18between a car and a boy on his bike.
27:23So, the driver's been breathalysed. He's not under the influence of anything.
27:27He checks out all in all. It's literally trying to discover who's done what and how.
27:31Have you spoken to the witnesses before? Yes, Sarge. What's in?
27:34The young man has been riding his bike from up this way.
27:39This car has been making a turn in towards the gates from his position on this side,
27:45at which point the kid is pressed, cos it's not his bike,
27:49he's pressed the wrong thing instead of the brakes, according to the children,
27:52and at which point he's collided with the front of the car.
27:58Can you help me out? Yeah.
28:00Tell me where your car was and how the two of you came together.
28:04He was quick, you know, fast, and driving the bike.
28:09So, he hit the car from the front.
28:13These are the kind of marks that have been left by contact with the pedal bike.
28:16When you look at the angle of the bike and the car,
28:19given what the driver said and what the witnesses have said,
28:22the car's either turned or literally the bike has come across the front of the car.
28:26It does look to be very much a case that the bike's not been under control,
28:31if you look at it clinically.
28:33Has the driver done anything wrong? I think not.
28:41I'm reasonably comfortable that there's been no offences committed,
28:44and at which point what you're dealing with is humanity.
28:47You're dealing with human beings and emotions and some shock.
28:52And everybody looks to the police and the ambulance service for reassurance,
28:55and that's what we try to do.
29:09When you get any job that involves kids, the first thing you think is,
29:13God, no, please, no, don't want anything serious.
29:16Whoever's to blame, it doesn't matter.
29:18I'm a dad, you know, I've got kids, and mine are all grown up now,
29:22but you just don't want to go to that job.
29:25That's a bad day in the office.
29:27So, with this, not the case at all.
29:30Young lad, not seriously injured.
29:32And do you know what? It's nice just to have that sort of human contact with people,
29:35you know, just to sort of reassure the driver, reassure the young lad that,
29:38you know, all is OK, you'll be fine.
29:43MUSIC FADES
29:53I think the support has to be dry at night.
29:55I'm hoping so, anyway.
29:57I think even criminals would rather go out and commit crime
30:00when the weather's dry, wouldn't they?
30:02Who likes doing anything in the rain?
30:04Martin's on the night shift in Sunderland,
30:07and although it's not raining,
30:09he'll still be undercover in an unmarked car.
30:12Yeah, I think we're eventually loaded up.
30:15I feel like I don't take this much stuff on holiday sometimes.
30:20Every eventuality.
30:22MUSIC CONTINUES
30:38We're sort of knocking on the door of going into rest days after the night,
30:42so I'm ready for a good couple of days off.
30:47Dad duty when I'm at home,
30:49a lot of that will be focused around me taxiing people
30:53around various sort of clubs and things like that,
30:57getting homework done.
30:59It certainly stops becoming rock and roll once you have kids, I think.
31:03Bedtime in my house, if the kids had their way,
31:07they'd probably be putting me and my wife to bed
31:09and they'd be sitting up watching some sort of Netflix series
31:12or something like that if they got their own way.
31:14Sometimes it's easier to deal with hardened criminals
31:16than trying to put an 11- and an 8-year-old to bed.
31:18At least you can put the handcuffs on a hardened criminal.
31:21I think it's frowned upon if you do that to your kids.
31:37This up ahead looks like a black Corsa.
31:39He's just came over the roundabout quite rapidly,
31:42so we'll try and get caught up with him, see what that's all about.
31:49Tango 461, how are we?
31:51Best.
31:53Mobile vehicle check, please.
31:55It's off the 195 at Washington.
31:57So does the Corsa in black, no report.
32:01Insurance is held, MLT is in order.
32:08Where's the park?
32:19That was fast.
32:24You got your licence on you, mate?
32:33That's why I've stopped you, mate, because you seemed...
32:35Bit rushed. ..quick over the roundabout,
32:37and then when I caught up with you, you were still quite quick.
32:40I'm just trying to get him back.
32:42Where was I?
32:43Mozzarella Dippers.
32:44Mozzarella Dippers?
32:49That's what she's been craving.
32:50I thought it was going to be, like, emergency prescription or something like that.
32:53No, she's been craving them all week in hospital.
32:56So obviously they've left them,
32:57and that's why I've just been trying to get them back,
32:59cos my ID's in there as well.
33:00Right.
33:01So that's why I was a bit quick.
33:02That's going to look good in court if you ran someone over, wouldn't it?
33:04Going fast.
33:05What's the jury going to think of that?
33:07Oh, I was trying to get some mozzarella dippers back.
33:09I know.
33:10Do you want to pass the dippers over, or...?
33:12Here, get your dippers.
33:18Will I be able to do a speed awareness course?
33:20Let's just slow it down, we're not there yet.
33:22You're quite lucky in the fact that we haven't been able to fully gauge the speed you were doing,
33:27other than me saying it looked quick.
33:29Yeah.
33:30How long have you been driving?
33:31Since June.
33:32Only just June gone.
33:33So we'll deal with it as words of advice.
33:35Slow it down, because at the minute, you've only got six points to lose.
33:38Are you aware of that when you've only just passed your test?
33:40Six points for the first two, yeah.
33:41So you're still in your probationary period of driving.
33:43If you start picking points up now,
33:45your licence is going to be gone quicker than you got it, yeah?
33:48So just slow it down.
33:50I like a mozzarella dipper as well, but I like my driving licence better.
33:54Right, no bother, mate.
33:55Thanks a lot.
33:56Take care.
34:16You know, we've been quite lenient with him there.
34:18We've used a bit of discretion.
34:19He's a brand new driver.
34:21We've educated him at the roadside about the risks of driving at excessive speed.
34:28I've heard all the excuses under the sun, but that is a first.
34:31When I seen it in the bag, I thought it was like a prescription or something.
34:36And he hasn't even offered us one of his dippers, so, yeah.
34:40Not that I would have accepted one, I don't think.
34:42I'm more of a chicken nugget, man.
34:45Right, well, we've got to go.
34:55Ford Mondeo in blue, there is an action marker on it.
34:59For drug supply and criminality.
35:02Insurance show not held.
35:06We've got an EMPR application for a blue Ford Mondeo.
35:11It's got links to the organised crime.
35:14We'll try our best to get all of it.
35:18If they've not bothered insuring the car,
35:20is there other things that they're not bothering to do as well?
35:23What else are they up to?
35:25There are around one million uninsured drivers on our roads.
35:29It's not the only gamble these reckless road users are prepared to take.
35:39This uninsured driver runs into Gwent traffic cops
35:43on the outskirts of Newport.
35:45He immediately tries to turn and make a getaway.
35:49The driver races across roundabouts, putting lives at risk.
35:55The chase leads cops onto the busy M4.
35:59But the suspect barely takes his foot off the pedal.
36:03He swerves in and out of rush-hour traffic
36:06and tears up the hard shoulder at over 100 miles per hour.
36:10The desperate driver flees the motorway
36:13and goes on a terrifying 90-mile-an-hour rampage
36:17through suburban streets.
36:20Jumping reds.
36:22Racing on the wrong side of the road.
36:27And nearly taking out a van.
36:30But try as he might, the driver just can't shake off the motorway cops
36:35and surrenders.
36:37The driver admitted dangerous driving,
36:39driving while disqualified and driving without insurance,
36:43as well as possession of cannabis and an offensive weapon.
36:47He was jailed for 12 months
36:49and disqualified from driving for three years and three months.
37:02Flood the area. We'll see if someone can spot us.
37:05Back in Sunderland, Martin is searching for an uninsured car
37:09suspected to have links to organised crime.
37:13Right, we've come up to West Weir.
37:15It's not at the lights, so it hasn't went Wearmouth Bridge.
37:18It must have committed towards the city centre.
37:27We're just playing catch-up on it, mate.
37:29One of the cars has got sight of this Mondeo.
37:33They're behind it now.
37:35It sounds like it hasn't reacted to the presence of them just yet.
37:38We'll get behind them and we'll take over from them.
37:41We're in the unmarked car.
37:43We'll sort of run the bluff on it, so to speak.
37:53Adam, that's me behind you now.
37:56Do you want me to take over here?
37:58I'll be in the unmarked.
38:00Yes, yes. Just about to turn right onto Holman Street.
38:03I'll let you go ahead just a bit.
38:05You turn left here.
38:13LB, I'm behind this vehicle now.
38:15I'm trying to train this vehicle.
38:17I'll take the role of pursuit commander if the vehicle is to make off.
38:21Request another T-PAC unit, air support, dogs.
38:24Roger.
38:31We're a nation of dog lovers.
38:35But some drivers behave like animals on the road.
38:40Wanting to play a game of fetch.
38:45And happy just to chase their tail.
38:52Or escaping death by a whisker.
38:56Or escaping death by a whisker.
39:01And driving like this will always land you in the doghouse.
39:08Holman, do you read me?
39:10There is an action marker on it.
39:12For drug supply and criminality.
39:14Ensure and shield not held.
39:16LB, I'm behind this vehicle now.
39:18Request another T-PAC unit, air support, dogs.
39:20Received.
39:22In Sunderland, PC Martin Anderson is on the tail of an uninsured car.
39:30Martin, I'm behind you.
39:31Come and join me.
39:34Stand by, coming up with a roundabout.
39:38We've got the whole of the team at the minute.
39:41So there's four tactical cars.
39:43Get a pre-emptive box onto the car.
39:46And safely get it stopped that way without causing any sort of damage or injury.
39:51T-PAC units, I think what we'll do is...
39:53We'll get out of the dual carriageway section.
39:55Pass this roundabout.
39:57We should have the rail into the near side.
39:59We'll just go for a box.
40:00Yes, yes.
40:01Yeah, let's move up, move up, move up.
40:04I'm coming, sir.
40:16Slow it down, slow it down.
40:18Slow it down.
40:20Vehicle stopped.
40:21No damage, no injury.
40:32Turn the engine off.
40:35Give me the key.
40:38Go on, mate.
40:39Right, just keep your hands where I can see them, buddy.
40:41Hello, mate.
40:44What's your name? You've got a driving licence?
40:46Come and jump in the back of our car.
40:47We'll just do some checks.
40:48Should I take the phone?
40:49Where's your ID and that?
40:50Yeah, of course, I'll give you the ID and everything.
40:52Right, you've got that on you, haven't you?
40:53Yeah, yeah.
40:54Right, come and have a sit in here because this car was shown as not being insured.
40:57Right, no, that's fine. Jump in here.
41:10Have you got your ID on you there?
41:12Yeah, yeah, of course.
41:13Should I give you the driving licence?
41:15Yeah, please.
41:20So this is an Albanian driving licence.
41:22And how long have you been in the UK for?
41:24August.
41:25August?
41:26Yeah.
41:27Have you got anything to show you've got insurance for this car?
41:36Is that a screenshot?
41:37Yeah.
41:38I don't know if I can check now.
41:40Yeah, I can give you the police number, I can find it.
41:43Have you had any emails from them that say it's been cancelled?
41:48Oh, okay.
41:49Was it just a short policy, was it?
41:50Yeah.
41:51For a day or two?
41:52Yeah.
41:53Did you think it could have run out?
41:55No, not for sure.
41:57Oh.
42:22While Martin deals with the driver,
42:24more cops run checks on his passenger.
42:28It does look like it's the same guy.
42:30It's certainly the photograph on his licence.
42:37So we'll detain and arrest him.
42:41Keep an eye on him.
42:45I don't know if you're aware, but your friend that you were with,
42:49he's wanted by Immigration.
42:51So he'll be coming with us.
42:53Really?
42:54Yeah, he's been arrested for that.
42:57Right, I'll come and let you out.
43:06Do me a favour, while you can get out,
43:08if you just get your belongings out the car, but do it from this side,
43:11because this car's obviously going down that other side of the road, okay?
43:24HE SIGHS
43:37Get two for the price of one, because that's an uninsured car
43:40with someone that's wanted in the passenger seat.
43:43You know, if you wanted, you'd be trying to keep a low profile.
43:47A little bit of common sense would probably suggest
43:49that you probably wouldn't want to be in a car that's not insured,
43:52but, you know, thankfully not everyone's got common sense
43:55and it makes our job a little bit easier at times.
43:58So a brilliant little stop, a good bit of teamwork.
44:01Happy.
44:09If you have any dashcam clips you think could feature
44:12in the next series of Motorway Cops, Catching Britain's Speeders,
44:16send them, along with your contact details,
44:18or if you'd like to contact us...
44:48.

18:30: The bugger can't remember when he had previous dealings with the cops? Not suspicious at all! Why does it matter that the victim didn't press charges, when the assault was witness by NPAS???
  • skaizun6 months ago
6:30: "I'm trying to get home, because I'm late for work (and in my pyjamas)." So, where were you that you were in your PJs, not at home, and need to get to work, that you later said you were coming FROM work? Apologies? Bank card for ID? Talking 100 mph? Doesn't take drugs, but, cannabis found? Surprise, surprise! Excuses out the window! AND he was arrested before for it? Liar, liar, pants on fire. 11:00: I'm surprised that the cop let him use the phone.
