German 'grannies against the far-right' protest ahead of state elections

The far-right Alternative for Germany could become the strongest party in state parliament if it wins the September 1 elections in Thuringia and Saxony.

00:00A few weeks before the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony, the grannies against

00:05the right are mobilizing again in Germany.

00:09The movement is calling on people to demonstrate for the protection of democracy.

00:14Most recently, several hundred demonstrators marched through the state capital of Thuringia.

00:20The far-right Alternative for Germany party has been in the state parliament for 10 years.

00:25It could become the strongest party on September 1st.

00:29The first groups of grannies against the right were founded in Germany in 2018.

00:36Since then, the movement has grown and aims to show that right-wing ideas are not an alternative,

00:42even for the older generation.

00:44According to the organizers, the movement now has around 30,000 active members.
