00:00The conflict during Imam Hussain's burial was a strong message to Imam Hussain from
00:10the Umayyads that in case of any opposition, he would be faced with their swords.
00:16During Muawiyah's time, Imam Hussain's life and activities were under pressure and
00:20intense surveillance by the government, so much so that even his supporters were prevented
00:25from meeting with him freely at times.
00:28As a result, the number of narrations quoted from Imam Hussain and Imam Hassan during
00:32Muawiyah's time is low when compared with the other Holy Imams.
00:45Imam Hussain continued his brother's policy regarding Muawiyah for around 10 years until
00:50Muawiyah's death, when the Imam's Shia followers from Kufa contacted him shortly
00:54after Imam Hussain's martyrdom, asking for an uprise against the injustices of Muawiyah.
01:00The Imam reminded them about his commitment to the peace treaty and asked them to wait
01:04until Muawiyah's death.
01:06If the Imam were to rise in Muawiyah's time, Muawiyah would kill him and blame him
01:10as a traitor to the peace treaty, therefore the Imam's death would be misinterpreted
01:14by the Muslim community.
01:30The Imam's commitment to the peace treaty didn't stop him from objecting to Muawiyah's
01:34crimes and violations of the peace treaty conditions.
01:37In many situations, the Imam contacted Muawiyah and condemned his actions, such as for the
01:42killings of the Shia leaders and Prophet's companions, Hujar ibn Adi and Amr ibn Hamiq.
02:08Imam Hussain was very respected, being the closest living blood relative to the Prophet
02:13and he was a symbol of piety in the society.
02:16The Imam used all opportunities to guide the Muslims to the true Islamic teachings.
02:21He performed Hajj 25 times on foot during his lifetime.
02:25His famous supplication of Arafat is narrated during this time.
02:45After years of being in power, Muawiyah decided to keep the government in the Umayyads by
02:51passing it on to his only son Yazid.
02:54For the first time since the Prophet's demise, Muawiyah intended to change the system
02:58of government from a caliphate to a monarchy.
03:01Muawiyah himself knew that Yazid lacked public popularity as he did not even keep the Islamic
03:06outlook in life like himself.
03:08He publicly drank alcohol, womanized, and indulged in sinful behavior.
03:31In order to get allegiance for Yazid, Muawiyah poisoned and bribed Yazid's main rivals for
03:36caliphate.
03:38Muawiyah martyred Imam Hassan as he knew that appointing a successor was explicitly against
03:42their peace treaty.
03:44Muawiyah tried bribing some of the political leaders, commanded some to propagate Yazid
03:48as a good leader, and removed those governors who failed to implement this mission.
03:59After years of planning, he finally succeeded in getting allegiance from the people all
04:04around the Islamic territory.
04:06However, Imam Hussain refused to pledge allegiance.
04:10Muawiyah sent a letter to Imam Hussain to which the Imam responded by condemning his
04:14actions to get allegiance for a successor, especially for someone like Yazid.
04:19Muawiyah then decided to personally visit Medina and made a public speech where he spoke
04:23highly of Yazid to encourage the people to pay allegiance to him.
04:28Imam Hussain interrupted the speech and disqualified Yazid, rejecting allegiance to someone like
04:32him.
04:33Thus, Imam Hussain remained the main opponent of Yazid for allegiance.
