00:00President Biden has unveiled an ambitious new plan to reign in the Supreme Court.
00:04I have great respect for our institutions and the separation of powers laid out in our Constitution.
00:10But what's happening now is not consistent with that doctrine of separation of powers.
00:15Biden was referring to recent revelations that justices like Clarence Thomas have received
00:19lavish gifts during their tenure, as well as controversial recent verdicts,
00:23as when the court ruled that presidents cannot be prosecuted for official acts.
00:27Biden used a speech on Monday to lay out three key reforms.
00:30First, I'm calling for a constitutional amendment called no one is above the law amendment.
00:38And I mean this sincerely, it holds there is no immunity
00:41for crimes former president committed while in office.
00:44And I believe we should have term limits for Supreme Court justice in the United States as well.
00:48Third, I'm calling for binding code of conduct for the Supreme Court.
00:53The political viability of these reforms may be questionable.
00:56Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson called them dead on arrival,
01:00a remark to which Biden responded in his speech.
01:02I think his thinking is dead on arrival.
