00:00Ozempic, it's the diabetes drug that has been sweeping the US, especially among celebrities
00:05for its weight loss side effect.
00:07Of course, the pharmaceutical now has knockoffs with a number of semi-glutide injectables
00:12on offer.
00:13However, according to a recent statement by the FDA, they have noted a concerning number
00:17of incidents related to dosing mistakes with regards to these counterfeits.
00:21America's poison centers reported they have received some 15 times more calls related
00:26to semi-glutide overdoses in 2024 over 2019.
00:30Between that same period, prescriptions also went up by 932%.
00:36Overdoses of the drug can lead to nausea, vomiting, fainting, and migraines.
00:40Sometimes those overdoses can even lead to hospitalizations, pancreatitis, and even gallstones.
00:46The main reason for these overdoses seems to have to do with the distribution, as the
00:49off-brand versions do not come in pre-dosed injectable pens.
00:53Rather, they are mixed by pharmacists or drug mixing facilities, and the concentration
00:58of the drug may vary between vials.
01:00With the FDA saying in a statement, the majority of the reports describe patients mistakenly
01:05drawing up more than the prescribed dose from a multiple-dose vial during self-administration.
01:10They added that most overdoses involve patients administering 5 to 20 times more than the
01:15intended dose of semi-glutide.
