Im Anime The Tunnel to Summer muss Kaoru Tono zusehen, wie seine Familie zerfällt: Nach dem Tod eines Geschwisterkindes und der Scheidung seiner Eltern fühlt er sich nicht mehr richtig zu Hause. Doch dann stolpert er über einen geheimnisvollen Tunnel, der offenbar die Gabe hat, Wünsche zu erfüllen. Der Urashima-Tunnel ist nicht an die Realität gebunden und kann einen reisen lassen, wohin auch immer man es sich wünscht. Der Preis für die Erfüllung des größten Begehrens ist allerdings geopferte Lebenszeit. Mit der Austauschschülerin Anzu Hanashiro verlegt er sich daraufhin auf ein Experiment.
