00:00Two people have been detained over the odour pollution that shut down four water treatment
00:07plants in Selangor and caused a cut in supply to thousands of households.
00:12The Department of Environment said the two were detained to help in investigation under
00:17Section 25 of the Environmental Quality Act, which provides for mandatory jail term of
00:22up to five years and a fine of up to 10 million if convicted.
00:27The department had conducted an investigation at a premise suspected of processing acrylic
00:32materials in the industrial area of Jalan Kampung Orang Asli, Kuang, in Rawang after
00:38the odour pollution was detected.
00:41The inspection found the source of the odour pollution was due to a chemical leak known
00:45as polymethacrylic acid from a storage tank, which is a liquid product produced by the
00:51premises.
00:52It is said the spill eventually overflowed into the premises' drainage system, then
00:57into the main road drain, and finally into the Kuang River.
01:01On Tuesday, the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant and Sungai Selangor Phase 1, Phase 2
01:06and Phase 3 WTPs had to be shut down, affecting supply to seven areas under Ayo Selangor.

01:19works within the premises, the drain area and affected streams.
