Homes needed for more than 250 puppies after closure

The RSPCA in Tasmania is looking for homes for more than 250 labradoodles after it shut down one of the state's largest dog breeders.

00:00The RSPCA says an out-of-court agreement was reached with Tasmanian Labradoodles on Friday

00:07last week, which included the immediate and permanent closure of the Tasmanian Labradoodles

00:12facility in Epping Forest.

00:15It also included the immediate surrender of all of its dogs.

00:19RSPCA Tasmania Chief Executive Andrea Dawkins says all of the dogs seized will now need

00:24to be rehomed, and many have never been in contact with a human.

00:29She expects it will cost at least $1,000 per dog for vet checks, vaccinations, behavioural

00:35assistance, food and temporary rehoming, and that's before they know if the dogs have any

00:41serious conditions that require further attention.

00:44The RSPCA first brought 70 charges for overbreeding against the owners of Tasmanian Labradoodles,

00:51Elizabeth Ann Bartlett and her husband Paul, in early 2023.

00:56The charges related to alleged overbreeding of their dogs between April 2021 and February

01:022023.

01:04As a result of this settlement, those charges now won't be pursued.

01:08The RSPCA is also calling for the state government to change the law so this can't happen again.
