00:00The facility is set to be built just a few kilometres from the Rockingham shore.
00:07We were relatively pleased with their responses to the concerns, especially around the level
00:16of low level waste that will be at the facility.
00:21In its report, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency has insisted the
00:26Australian Submarine Agency proposal was compliant with all the laws and regulations
00:32and said in the worst case scenario, radiological doses off-site were negligible, while on-site
00:39there were significantly less than statutory dose limits.
00:43But some locals are not convinced.
00:45I'm concerned about radiation leaks, accidents, they do happen, and the threat of Coburn Sound
00:54being made a target.
00:56These residents were among 165 who provided submissions in relation to the proposal during
01:02a 30-day consultation period.
01:04One of the main things that I put in my submission was about the environmental impacts, potential
01:09environmental impacts.
01:11We have three endangered marine species in this area.
01:15But these submissions were not made public.
01:19The facility is expected to be operational from 2027 to support UK and US nuclear-powered
01:26submarines under the AUKUS deal.
01:29Local authorities say there's still a great deal of preparation ahead.
01:33Our infrastructure really needs to be able to cope.
01:37There'll be all sorts of transport issues, housing issues, medical, education.
01:45Meanwhile details around the nuclear storage facility, including the amount of waste it
01:50would hold and how long it would stay there, remain unclear.
