00:00In the days of the Joseon dynasty, Taegu, at the confluence of the Nakdong and Geumho
00:16rivers, was the seat of the powerful governor of the now-defunct Gyeongsang province.
00:22You can see his historic home and office at the Gyeongsang Gamyang Park, which stages a
00:27changing-of-the-guard ceremony on Saturdays in summer.
00:31The city's location at the junction of two important rivers gave rise to Seomun Market,
00:35which is famed for its fabrics and is a street food mecca after nightfall.
00:40Today we share the top 10 best things to do in Taegu so you can plan a trip and experience
00:45all the exciting attractions and activities this beautiful city has to offer.
00:54Starting with number 10, 83 Tower.
01:00The tower that catches your eye in all parts of Taegu opened in 1992 after 8 years of construction.
01:0683 Tower is just over 200 meters tall and is a date night go-to.
01:12The elevator fires you up to the observation deck and the grill by Ashley Revolving Restaurant
01:17in a matter of seconds where you'll be met by the ultimate view of Taegu.
01:22Tickets to the observatory are 10,000 Korean Wons for adults and 5,000 Korean Wons for

01:39Something to combine with your day trip to Donghwaseo, this amazing Buddha statue is
01:43also on Palgong Mountain and can be reached on a testing but rewarding climb from Gwangansa
01:48Temple.
01:49Gapyei is a Korean national treasure dating from Unified Silla in the 9th century CE.
01:55Carved in situ from the granite on the east flank of the mountain, this seated Buddha
01:59is 4 meters tall and on his head is a slab, 15 centimeters thick.
02:06Some details to look for are the enlarged ears, the sturdy, slightly raised shoulders,
02:11the three wrinkles on the neck, and the left hand, thought to be holding a medicine jar.
02:22At number 8, Donghwaseo.
02:28Palgong Mountain, on the border between Taegu and the North Gyeongsan Province is a favorite
02:33hiking destination, sprinkled with temples and shrines, and no shortage of places downwind
02:38to stop for food to recover from your exertions.
02:42Most people beat a path to Donghwaseo, a Jogi order temple on the southern slope, and with
02:47a history that can be tracked back to the end of the 5th century.
02:51The current complex dates to 1732 after damage was inflicted during the Japanese invasions
02:56at the end of the 16th century.
03:06At number 7, Baisulsan Recreational Forest.
03:13There are gorgeous sweeps of upland nature all around Taegu, but for a short period in
03:18spring, Baisulsan Recreational Forest on the city's southern outskirts is the loveliest.
03:24This is the Baisulsan Chamket Munhwa Festival in April-May, when a huge valley, reached
03:29after a stiff hike, is bedded with a sea of pink weric azalea blooms.
03:34It's a sight that photos can't do justice and will make the climb and a tricky journey
03:38before it totally worth your while.
03:41Head for Baisulsan Recreational Forest at other times for the strange rock formations,
03:46cliffs, and to visit the Dijonsa Buddhist Temple, a shooting location for several Korean

04:02To give you a sense of its great age, Seomon Market was one of Korea's three prime markets
04:07towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty.
04:10An interesting detail is that, even though the market has grown to many times its original
04:15size, the names of the alleys, like Dakjeon and Hongdakijeon, date back centuries.
04:21Seomon Market, with more than 4,000 stores across several large buildings, is renowned
04:26for fabrics and textiles, be it clothing, linen, cotton, silk, and satin, as well as
04:32haberdashery, handicrafts, and silverware.
04:36For out-of-towner's charm lies in the street food at night, and there's a mix of crowd-pleasers
04:40and more challenging delicacies.
04:45At number 5, Gyeongsang Gamyang Park.
04:51The residence and office of the governor of the old Gyeongsang province in the days of
04:55the Joseon Dynasty has been turned into a park so it can be enjoyed by the public.
05:00The oldest buildings at this Korean National Historic Site were built at the beginning
05:04of the 17th century.
05:07You can view the Seonhwadang building where the governor worked, valued as one of the
05:11few surviving government buildings from the period in Korea, as well as the governor's
05:15residence Gyeongsanggak.
05:18These buildings are ensconced in lush forest with flowerbeds, a grass plaza and water features,
05:24all streaked with walking paths.
05:29At number 4, Apseon Park.
05:35The steep granite mountains that soar over the south side of Daegu are a walker's dream.
05:40Apseon Park encompasses the 600-meter mountain of the same name, while its valley is at the
05:45foot of two more peaks, Sanseong Mountain and Didyok Mountain.
05:51Something you have to do is catch the cable car up to the Apseon Observatory to see Daegu
05:55laid out far below.

06:02riding and archery.
06:06At number 3 in our list, The Ark.
06:12On a green peninsula at the confluence of the Nakdong and Geumho rivers is what looks
06:17like a giant upturned shell.
06:19This is The Ark, in a cinematic natural setting with dark, wooded mountains on the horizon
06:24to the east, north and west.
06:27The pavilion, clad with silver pillows and designed to evoke a skipping stone or Korean
06:31rice bowl was designed by New York's Asymptote Studio as part of the World Expo 2012.
06:38Inside there's an exhibition on the Four River Restoration Project, safeguarding the ecology
06:43of the Han, Nakdong, Geumho and Yangsan, and documenting the culture of Korea's rivers.

07:11There are more than 1,750 species growing here, at greenhouses and beside rambling
07:16outdoor trails, and there's also a hall for indoor exhibitions.
07:21As you'd hope, spring and summer are a fine time to pay a visit, but the Arboretum's landmark
07:26event is the Chrysanthemum Festival across two weeks at the end of October and start
07:31of November.
