00:00On wednesday israel dropped leaflets urging palestinians to leave gaza city ahead of a new offensive
00:06Israel also announced the completion of its operations in the city's shugaiya district
00:11But said it was still pursuing hamas fighters who were regrouping in other parts of the gaza strip
00:17Let's talk about this now with jordana miller the abc news foreign correspondent who joins me now live from jerusalem
00:23Jordana, what more do we know first of all about this latest offensive in gaza city?
00:27Well, we do know that over two hundred thousand gazans have been asked to move
00:33It doesn't mean they're all moving. Um, but once again
00:37uh, they're in a very, uh, stressful
00:41Miserable really experience where they're having to take their families and move again west to uh,
00:48What is described as israel describes as the humanitarian zone
00:52Humanitarian zone though. It is, uh, the conditions there seem far from really humane
00:58It is intensely packed with people
01:01There are not a lot of basic services
01:04Uh, and you know moving
01:07Again, tens of thousands of people into this area that's already overcrowded
01:12And by the way through active combat, even though israel dropped those leaflets, uh yesterday
01:18The combat continued through the night and through today in gaza city
01:24and it's a dangerous very dangerous place dozens have already been killed and
01:30Israel has pulled out as you said from
01:33An area called shajia, which is a little bit to the northeast
01:38but there's still intense operations going on in
01:40Central gaza in the refugee camps and in rafa in the south
01:45We are seeing what some here describing a kind of late surge in the fighting across the gaza strip
01:53Uh as at the same time that those ceasefire talks are happening
01:57In doha in qatar
02:00And as momentum is building towards a deal and those are likely to related
02:06phenomena, in other words israel seems to be putting more and more military pressure on hamas as
02:13Uh the momentum builds hoping it'll it'll get hamas to soften its position
02:18I'm, not sure it's going to necessarily work, but it seems to be one of the tactics and what we're seeing
02:25Now this of course comes as the u.s. Has said it is quote cautiously optimistic over ceasefire talks
02:32Do you think that that's any closer to actually happening?
02:36I do want to say it's the first time in six months that we've heard
02:40Progress and positive
02:43Feedback from all sides including the israeli side after this summit in doha
02:49It doesn't mean that we're going to have a deal tomorrow
02:51It'll probably still take two to three to four weeks to hammer out some of the details
02:57but its initial progress the sides are
03:00Agreeing on most of the framework of this deal
03:05And they're getting into some of the dirty details now, for example, who will be on the list of jailed palestinians
03:12That israel will agree to release
03:14What will that post-war?
03:17Interim government look like in gaza, right if it's not hamas and it's not the israeli army
03:24What kind of palestinian leadership will be there? So those details still have to be hammered out gaps still remain
03:31Jordana, thank you for that jordana miller in jerusalem. Thanks
