Adults from Sunderland with learning disabilities enjoy activities at launch of WILD Club

A new club in Sunderland is providing a range of activities for adults with learning disabilities.

00:04We set up the Wild Club Weaside Interactive Leisure and Development to offer a safe space

00:10for adults with learning difficulties to come together, socialise, make friends, possibly

00:18learn something, do a bit of exercise if we can squeeze that in as well.

00:23What sort of activities do people get to do then?

00:26Every week we do a different activity to try and keep things fresh.

00:29One week it could be a dance class and karaoke, another week sports, baking, arts and crafts

00:36or even a quiet board game session.

00:39And how much of a need is there for this sort of service for people with learning disabilities?

00:42I think there's been a huge need, especially for adults, a lot of times once people reach

00:4718 they age out of a lot of services that's available, especially since Covid a lot of

00:53other clubs and activity centres have unfortunately closed down.

01:06Okay then Gavin, so what's the best thing about coming along to the club for you then?

01:11Sports, meeting new people, meeting my new girlfriend.

01:13And what about yourself Rebecca?

01:15I love coming here, meeting new people and enjoying all the activities.

01:19And what's your favourite activity you like to do?

01:21Dance and karaoke.

01:23And do you understand your son's been coming along here as well?

01:26Yes.

01:27He's 18 now, is one of the issues that once he becomes an adult the same sort of provision

01:32doesn't exist, is that the case?

01:33Yes, that's the case, yes.

01:34So how valuable a service is this going to be?

01:36Very valuable.

01:38What about is there a chance to chat to other parents in a similar situation as well?
