00:00:00Welcome to the ITM podcast.
00:00:20This is episode 220 of the ITM podcast, the official Boston Red Sox podcast of the CLNS
00:00:25Media Network, brought to you by GameTime, best place to buy tickets online, sports, concerts,
00:00:32all your favorite events, and also by PrizePix, the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the CLNS
00:00:37Media Network. And the Boston Red Sox finally lose a series in the month of June. My name is
00:00:43Joey Caponni, that's Scott Neville. Scott, what's up, dude? You know, it's just a lot, it's just,
00:00:48it's disappointing. You go, forget the blowouts and the fact that it's just, I'm purely looking
00:00:54at standings and more just record over 500. And as we've talked about that you started,
00:01:00and I jumped on as you like to make very clear, this eight over 500 number is very much in my
00:01:05brain. Yep. And it felt like we were within between like Toronto was likely at some point,
00:01:14and then you should have definitely got it by now. And now we're kind of going backwards. It's just
00:01:18like, I'm starting to, I'm starting to not, I'm not fully, I was close to fully closing the door
00:01:25on selling. And now I'm still like, that's still in my head, where it's like, I'm, I'm envisioning
00:01:30two paths. And I'm still like, I could totally see us getting to a point where it's Pavetto,
00:01:34Neil, Kenley, Chris Martin out the door. And I can also see us adding, but that's a much
00:01:38more clear path for me still. I mean, it, it feels like we are so close to, you know, the
00:01:47trade Dylan, we kind of are. And it feels like you, you have a clear picture of what the team
00:01:51is. You just have to look back one year or two years. You know, this has been a trio of
00:01:58identical seasons and that there were times where they were, they were high over 500.
00:02:03We talked about it last week that, you know, there were times they were eight over times
00:02:06they were nine over. So yeah, it's, it's not an end all be all, even if they hit that number.
00:02:12But I will say this right now, Scott, five over.
00:02:16And how many, how far away is five from eight real quick?
00:02:23Hold on, let me get a calculator.
00:02:24Yeah, no, get a calc for anybody new. A calc is short for calculator.
00:02:29It's just slang.
00:02:30I got, I got this many.
00:02:33Three.
00:02:34Yeah.
00:02:34All right. Three. How many, can you check how many games they're about to play against the
00:02:38Miami literal Marlins?
00:02:42Um, okay, I can try.
00:02:45Yeah, just schedule. I think they have it on the website,
00:02:47bostonredsox.com, I think is what it is.
00:02:50One, two, three.
00:02:52Three. Oh, shit. Okay.
00:02:55Fuck. Okay. So if they win all those games against the Marlins, they're eight over.
00:02:58We just kind of ran into that one. Didn't even know. I don't think you even know where you were
00:03:01going to start that. We just kind of got lucky.
00:03:03Listen, when you, my grandfather used to always say this, Scott, this is a quote I'll never forget.
00:03:09When you explore, you wander into what you needed to find.
00:03:19And he used to say that all the time. He still does.
00:03:22Yeah.
00:03:22He's still alive.
00:03:24Okay. That was kind of misleading in a lot of ways. Um, okay.
00:03:28Still around, but he says it, he says it less now, but he used to say it all the time.
00:03:32I don't know.
00:03:32We found it.
00:03:33Six and four in their last 10.
00:03:34The 30 and 53, but you know, there's six or four in the last 10.
00:03:40There are 30 and 53.
00:03:42Yeah.
00:03:42The Miami Marlins are a dog shit team.
00:03:45But fair to call them a sweepable team.
00:03:48They're a very sweepable team.
00:03:50They're an incredibly sweepable team.
00:03:51And you'll see that in the pitching preview.
00:03:52And when we, when we look forward to that whole series, they, their pitching is just,
00:03:59it's a busy deal with some injuries.
00:04:01They deal with some injuries on the pitching front.
00:04:03I would imagine.
00:04:05So there are a handful of fellows who you've never heard of.
00:04:08I've never heard of.
00:04:10And I have made, you know, there are two guys who have made a combined
00:04:14three major league starts that the Red Sox are going to face in that series.
00:04:18Yeah.
00:04:18I mean, you know, the, the guys that are hurt right now are all the guys that people
00:04:22in Red Sox fandom that are unrealistic with their trade scenarios have been pitching to us for
00:04:27many, many years, you know, look at it.
00:04:30Hazers, Lizardo.
00:04:33Sandy's been down for quite a bit, but even like Braxton Garrett.
00:04:38Yeah.
00:04:38Whatever.
00:04:39Yeah.
00:04:40I mean, you can make a whole argument there about, you know, pitching staff, coaching
00:04:44staffs, usage, deployment mechanics, all that stuff.
00:04:49You can make a million arguments there that guys get hurt in certain games.
00:04:53It's changed.
00:04:54The game has changed the pitch clock.
00:04:58Don't get me started.
00:05:00Let's talk about the Padres series.
00:05:02Sox lost this series.
00:05:04And, you know, for a minute there, I thought our prediction, I'm so bright.
00:05:10I thought our prediction there was going to be correct again.
00:05:16Because we, in the prior series, we even was that two series ago.
00:05:22Jays was last series.
00:05:23Yeah.
00:05:25We nailed that.
00:05:26We nailed exactly how that series is going to go.
00:05:28I thought this was going to be the same thing.
00:05:29We were talking about that one.
00:05:30If they lose one, it's going to be Friday.
00:05:32That one had the rain out.
00:05:33The Reds won.
00:05:34We got really, there was three games and we got all three of them, right?
00:05:38Yes.
00:05:39Yes.
00:05:40I thought this is going to be the same kind of deal.
00:05:42Because I remember we said sweepable, but the Sox might lose on Friday.
00:05:47If they lose one, it's going to be on Friday.
00:05:49Yeah.
00:05:51And we did lose on Friday.
00:05:53Yeah.
00:05:54And they almost swept the other two.
00:05:56So we had a ton of momentum.
00:05:58We had a ton of momentum going into Saturday.
00:06:01Yeah.
00:06:02Because they lost the shit out of that game on Friday.
00:06:05So we had so much momentum.
00:06:08And then Houk said, hey, watch this.
00:06:12This is going to be the worst I've ever pitched in the big leagues.
00:06:17Tanner Houk.
00:06:18Tanner Houk.
00:06:19Let's talk about it.
00:06:20Does Tanner Houk suck?
00:06:22I'm going to say no.
00:06:24Um, just because, I mean, he's made 16 starts, 15 of them very good.
00:06:29One of them bad.
00:06:31So I'm going to go ahead and say.
00:06:32Certain videos are going to do that.
00:06:35Certain networks are going to go with that headline.
00:06:40I mean.
00:06:41Does Tanner Houk suck now?
00:06:43Eight earned runs?
00:06:43Get the hell out of here.
00:06:44He's never going to be a real ace.
00:06:46You know, I remember when Pedro Martinez pitched.
00:06:49Did you ever remember him giving up eight earned runs?
00:06:51I don't.
00:06:52I don't think so.
00:06:55I've always said he's never been a real ace.
00:06:57I'm sorry.
00:06:58Did they have, has, has B-Ref not updated the Saturday game?
00:07:05That can't be true.
00:07:06Sunday evening.
00:07:08Look at Tanner Houk's game log.
00:07:10Is it 2-6-7-A-R-A?
00:07:13Cause that's what it is now.
00:07:16No, it still has him at a 2-18.
00:07:19Oh.
00:07:20Oh.
00:07:21What the hell are we doing?
00:07:23I hope that's not true for like league wide.
00:07:26Cause I wrote an article today that would be not right based on.
00:07:30Andrew Benintendi, I actually wrote about today.
00:07:33Well, why would you be doing that?
00:07:36Because the White Sox are looking to trade them according to Bob Nightingale.
00:07:40And I was like, oh, a little update on how that's going.
00:07:45And I just want to inform the Red Sox fans.
00:07:47I didn't do like a, put the Red Sox trade for like nothing like that.
00:07:51It was just purely like a, hey, just checking in on our old buddy, Andrew.
00:07:55It's going really, really, really bad.
00:07:58If you guys haven't been paying attention.
00:08:00So.
00:08:02Well, they haven't updated it.
00:08:05Yeah.
00:08:05That, that's very strange.
00:08:07Or they gave him a mulligan.
00:08:09They might've given him a mulligan with the old high low.
00:08:12Cause yeah, that's what I would have gone by.
00:08:15I would have, that's, I certainly would have used it after that game.
00:08:19If I know we, we, we did this last week where we just, we talked about a visual medium.
00:08:26But again, if you want to go look at the pitch map from Tanner Houk, start.
00:08:30Control was a crazy issue.
00:08:33He did not have control of the slider whatsoever.
00:08:36It was all over the place.
00:08:37It was either a foot outside or right down the pipe.
00:08:40Um, 48 pitches outside of the zone.
00:08:45Uh, just had no control.
00:08:47Just lost it one day.
00:08:48He's, uh, a very good hitter or good, very good pitcher.
00:08:52Very good player.
00:08:53Just simply didn't have it.
00:08:54I think this is just a moment where, where everybody has off days.
00:09:00Uh, I will say probably the worst timing for him personally though.
00:09:06Uh, one it's on his birthday.
00:09:09Mm.
00:09:10Sucks.
00:09:11Uh, but also is Cy Young caliber season.
00:09:16And also it's the penultimate start to the first half.
00:09:22So like the, the second to last one before his, uh, all-star campaign comes to an end.
00:09:30So I don't know if that two, six, seven still leads AL starters.
00:09:35I would imagine it does not, but he was at the top with the two 18.
00:09:39Uh, which was really his best case because we talked about,
00:09:42you know, the star power, uh, not being on his side.
00:09:46And if he was going to be the starter for the AL side,
00:09:50that he was going to have to blow the competition out of the water.
00:09:54He's going to have to blow the competition.
00:09:56And, uh, he didn't want to have to do that.
00:10:00Right.
00:10:00But you know, if he's, if he's tight, like neck and neck with somebody,
00:10:03I just, I don't like his chances of.
00:10:06So he's, uh, you know, who leads the, the, I mean,
00:10:12if you go by ERA and he does have the innings and the strike and kind of the,
00:10:17yeah.
00:10:17And the strikeouts,
00:10:22if we're going to go completely unbiased, the answer is Seth Lugo from the Kansas City Royals.
00:10:29And Tanner Howe is now sixth in ERA.
00:10:31I mean, Seth Lugo has a half a run lower ERA now at 217.
00:10:39He has nine more innings.
00:10:42Granted, he has another start.
00:10:44He has the same amount of strikeouts.
00:10:48Yeah.
00:10:490.01 higher whip.
00:10:51Yeah.
00:10:51It's, it's, I mean, Seth Lugo was just, as we've always said,
00:10:55a better version of Tanner Howe.
00:10:57We've always said that that's insane.
00:10:59That's insane.
00:11:01This top 10 is insane.
00:11:04I think that might give it to, uh,
00:11:06Scooball based on this list.
00:11:08Cause he seems to have the heat.
00:11:09Like he seems to have the momentum.
00:11:11He's the next guy that everyone's talking about him.
00:11:14Uh, Tariq Scooball.
00:11:17I mean, if it's not Corbin Burns, why wouldn't it be Corbin Burns?
00:11:22It just feels like Tariq Scooball has more helium.
00:11:25I feel like they want to,
00:11:26they want to go into who's being talked about who's getting the mentions.
00:11:28He's getting the clicks on pitching ninja.
00:11:30And I feel like that's him right now, but you're right.
00:11:32Corbin Burns is, I mean, absolutely that guy.
00:11:36He's definitely the biggest name value, um, on this list.
00:11:41Blanco doesn't have the innings.
00:11:45This is an insane top 10 list of pitchers right now by ERA are Seth Lugo, Corbin Burns,
00:11:53Scooball, Bianco, Bianco, Bianco, uh, Tyler Anderson on that.
00:11:59That was racist.
00:11:59I did just, uh, un poquito extra.
00:12:04We'll actually sauce on that one.
00:12:06Salsa.
00:12:07See, uh, Tyler Anderson, Tanner Houk, Logan Gilbert, Garrett Crochet,
00:12:12Brady Singer, Eric Fetty.
00:12:14Brady Singer was supposed to be so good when he got drafted.
00:12:18And so it's cool to see that.
00:12:21I guess.
00:12:22He's in the national league.
00:12:23We got ranger Suarez, Christopher Sanchez, Zach Wheeler, Gavin stone, Chris sale,
00:12:29Sonny gray, Jake Irvin, Imanaga, and Logan Webb.
00:12:33How starting pitchers lost their star power because what a bunch of randoms.
00:12:39It's it makes absolutely no sense.
00:12:42It's just a bummer.
00:12:43I don't know if there was ever a year it was going to happen.
00:12:45It would be this one where things are out of whack.
00:12:48Tanner Houk's been so hot.
00:12:50He just deserved it better.
00:12:51That's all.
00:12:52Can we talk about, I mean, we're not going to talk about on this show for more than me
00:12:55just stating this, but the Phillies are the top three ERAs in the national league.
00:12:59Holy shit, dude.
00:13:01That's crazy.
00:13:01So good.
00:13:02They're very good, dude.
00:13:06Sox beat them up.
00:13:08People forget that not too long ago, the Sox beat them.
00:13:12Yeah.
00:13:12Twice.
00:13:15And no, that was 16.
00:13:17They have four of the top 16, including the top three.
00:13:21Sorry.
00:13:21All right.
00:13:21We want to talk about our team again.
00:13:24Do you think Steve thought at all about how the Red Sox got their dicks pounded in on
00:13:29June 28th?
00:13:30Do you think he was thinking about it?
00:13:33Definitely.
00:13:34Because I'm sure it's going to come up today for at least 15 minutes.
00:13:39There was some one of them tweeted about it.
00:13:41I would assume Milliken or I don't know.
00:13:45I saw I saw somebody be like, hey, this is, you know, I'm reminded of a day
00:13:50like today.
00:13:52So, yeah, I doubt this is their first time all together.
00:13:55I can't imagine that won't be a large talking point for them.
00:14:00Yeah.
00:14:00Had that been the day that Tanner Houk imploded?
00:14:07All right, Steve.
00:14:09Instead, it was a day Bale imploded?
00:14:12Pavetta.
00:14:13Pavetta.
00:14:13That's what it was.
00:14:14I was thinking of the Pavetta seven run game.
00:14:16We've had a lot of implosions lately.
00:14:19Holy.
00:14:20For a while, it's been very tiered.
00:14:23Maybe not for a while, but at least for the month of June, it was pretty clearly tiered
00:14:28that it was Tanner Houk, Cutter Crawford.
00:14:32Yep.
00:14:34Nick Pavetta, Brian Bale.
00:14:37Like, and then whoever.
00:14:40I would actually go with any number four starter.
00:14:43Winkowski, Criswell, Whitlock and then Bale.
00:14:46Yeah.
00:14:48And that middle space closing in a little bit.
00:14:55I don't know.
00:14:56Cutter, Pavetta and Houk.
00:14:59Hopefully, this is just a one-off, but you don't want to see that gap close.
00:15:02I don't know.
00:15:03Not in that direction anyway, if you were to close it one way or the other.
00:15:07Out of curiosity, do you want to take a stab at where our starting pitcher year is right now?
00:15:13Oh, wow.
00:15:14391?
00:15:19It is a 376, but we have now fallen down to ninth in the league when we were first for
00:15:29the first two months, pretty much.
00:15:31Yeah.
00:15:33Yeah.
00:15:34What are you going to do?
00:15:35Phillies still have a sub-three starting pitcher ERA.
00:15:40A lot of Phillies talk for me, but Jesus.
00:15:44Another implosion, dude.
00:15:46If you want to talk about it, we can't talk about implosions and talk about this series
00:15:48without talking about Weisert in game one of this series.
00:15:52Four runs in one inning.
00:15:54Brought his ERA up a full run from a 265 to a 360.
00:15:59It was one walk, one strikeout, a homer, four earned runs, four hits.
00:16:05That was the nine-run inning, right?
00:16:09No, he made it through that whole inning.
00:16:11No, but that was nine runs in that inning, correct?
00:16:15Four.
00:16:17That wasn't the same inning?
00:16:18Didn't he come in four, Pavetta?
00:16:22Pavetta didn't record it out.
00:16:23It would be one.
00:16:24It would come out as one inning, but didn't Pavetta.
00:16:27He started that, and they gave up nine runs.
00:16:31Did he go in Friday?
00:16:32He allowed four, period.
00:16:34Was that also him on Saturday?
00:16:36Wait, this was Saturday?
00:16:37I don't even know.
00:16:37I'm talking Friday.
00:16:39I'm talking about Friday as well.
00:16:43Pavetta came in, couldn't record an hour in the fifth,
00:16:47and then I thought Weisert replaced him and kept the train moving for San Diego.
00:16:54But it's not going to show up on the box score because it's just going to say,
00:16:58it's going to look like Pavetta pitched four innings, but because he didn't record an hour.
00:17:01Oh, I get what you're saying, dude.
00:17:02I get what you're saying.
00:17:04You're saying, is that the inning where Pavetta had allowed five without getting an out?
00:17:11And then, yeah, and then Weisert gave up four more in that same inning.
00:17:17Yes.
00:17:17So we gave up nine in an inning on the box score.
00:17:20It doesn't look like that, but.
00:17:23Yes, that was the nine run fifth inning in game one.
00:17:27Right.
00:17:28Yes.
00:17:28Right.
00:17:29Okay.
00:17:29We're on the same page.
00:17:30It just took us a second there.
00:17:31It took us an actual minute to get there, but yes, that was the nine run inning,
00:17:35the nine consecutive batters to reach.
00:17:39That was the fastest this game is over I've ever witnessed.
00:17:46I've witnessed quite a bit of baseball, Scott.
00:17:49Yeah.
00:17:49That is the fastest this game is over I've ever seen in my life.
00:17:55Three minutes, maybe.
00:17:56Three minutes it went from.
00:17:58Was it a 1-0 ball game?
00:18:01Socks up 1-0.
00:18:04It happened so fast.
00:18:05To down 9-0, 9-1.
00:18:08Yeah, we had one right there.
00:18:10Yeah, we went from 1-0 to 9-1 real quick, but we tacked one on immediately to cut it down to 9-2
00:18:16right after.
00:18:17I mean, honestly, that's what people are going to be talking about more than anything is
00:18:22Devers' ability to get the ball in front of him.
00:18:26It's one of those moments where that ball is flying out the yard, the Padres are going,
00:18:43let's remember there's no clock on this game, okay?
00:18:46We got to walk in here, all right?
00:18:47We're starting to slip away.
00:18:48I could feel the momentum shifting.
00:18:50This is at Fenway, and then I don't know what happened after that,
00:18:54but that was a good momentum switch for us, and it carried over to the next game, too,
00:19:03where we got the momentum back.
00:19:05Right, yeah, where the Socks stayed right in it again.
00:19:10Dude, the one-inning implosion is becoming quite the issue.
00:19:15Yeah, that's how we've lost pretty much every game.
00:19:18Last three games we've lost have been the one-inning implosion.
00:19:22It happened to Bayo, too.
00:19:23Yeah, it happened to Bayo, it happened to Hauk, it happened to Weissert, it happened
00:19:27to Pavetta.
00:19:27I guess those are the same inning, but it's something to keep note of that this Red Sox
00:19:33team is capable of that you can just look up, and that one-run ball game is now a seven-run
00:19:39ball game.
00:19:39It just happens, and nobody's safe from it.
00:19:41Not even your, like you said, Cy Young caliber, all-star game starting caliber, starting pitcher,
00:19:48also capable of just giving you some poop.
00:19:52Yeah, well, eloquently put.
00:19:56Thank you, dude.
00:19:58You know what else is eloquently put?
00:20:01This ad read you're about to play?
00:20:03This ad read I'm about to play.

00:21:26All right, San Diego Padres came back to town, which means that Xander Bogarts came back
00:21:30to town, which also means that Don Arcillo came back to town.
00:21:33First time for both of those guys coming back here, which is weird to think about.
00:21:37That's the first time the Padres have been at Fenway since Don Arcillo was so gracefully
00:21:43let go in 2015.
00:21:45Isn't that crazy?
00:21:47Yeah, that doesn't feel right at all.
00:21:50Like even a little.
00:21:51It is.
00:21:52The last time they were here was 2013.
00:21:56That's insane.
00:21:58Has he done any national games for us?
00:22:01I feel like he's called the Red Sox game before.
00:22:03Yeah, I think he was here with Fox a couple years ago.
00:22:07But he might not have been, who knows if that was home.
00:22:12Right, yeah, I don't know.
00:22:13I think it was at Fenway.
00:22:14I'm not sure.
00:22:15This is the first time here with the Padres, at least.
00:22:17Yeah.
00:22:17So that's different.
00:22:19First time the Padres have been here, too, which just, I don't know, means something,
00:22:22which means I was expecting a lot of San Diego Padres fans there.
00:22:26That's kind of the whole thing this year, the Fenway experience, blah, blah, blah.
00:22:29We can talk about it all year.
00:22:31We can talk about it with every series.
00:22:32But when a team hasn't been here in 11 years, you expect them to come out and show the place.
00:22:37I don't know if they did.
00:22:39Machado claims they did, but I didn't get that vibe.
00:22:59You think he's a heel?
00:23:00Is that what you're trying to say?
00:23:01You think he's trying to lean into the villain role?
00:23:09Especially in Boston, where as far as I know, he's pretty liked.
00:23:13So maybe he's trying to be like, I'll try this villain thing on.
00:23:17Do you think he could be trying that?
00:23:18I don't think he would step on other people's toes or Achilles or kneecaps, personally.
00:23:27That was good, Scott.
00:23:28That was good.
00:23:29That was good.
00:23:31Don Orsello, coming back.
00:23:33Did you see the quotes?
00:23:36Because he sat down.
00:23:38I hated it.
00:23:38Spoke with Sean McAdam.
00:23:43And great piece.
00:23:44Great piece.
00:23:46Great guy, Sean McAdam.
00:23:48A lot of people don't know this about Sean McAdam.
00:23:50Huge hockey guy.
00:23:52People forget.
00:23:53It's not that people don't know.
00:23:54People forget.
00:23:54He's like a big Bruins guy.
00:23:56I didn't know where you were going with that, but.
00:24:01I'm trying to find.
00:24:06I'm trying to find.
00:24:08The quote here.
00:24:09Give me a second, Scott.
00:24:11Wholly unprepared, this guy.
00:24:14Incredibly unprepared.
00:24:15I thought I would have the quote right up.
00:24:17But basically said, no, I'm not still a fan of the Boston Red Sox.
00:24:22I was a little surprised by the quote you're about to read because it didn't feel a little.
00:24:27I get it.
00:24:29I'm glad how open he was about his hatred for John Henry.
00:24:34But I was a little surprised that he is like.
00:24:38Sick of the like, he was like, I don't care about this team anymore.
00:24:43I got the quote here.
00:24:45This is from McAdam.
00:24:48Quote, and despite his long association with the Sox, he feels no divided loyalty whatsoever
00:24:52this weekend.
00:24:54Quote, I believe when you're fired from a team, you lose your allegiance to that team
00:24:57as far as caring whether they win or lose.
00:25:00He said that was part of the deal.
00:25:01If I'm out, so are they.
00:25:03I can't be a fan of someone who's not a fan of mine.
00:25:06You're going to like someone who despises you or replaces you.
00:25:09I couldn't do it.
00:25:09My allegiance had to end, especially where I went to another franchise where I am invested.
00:25:14That fandom ended.
00:25:15Now my love for the Bruins, Celtics and Patriots has not changed.
00:25:18They didn't fire me.
00:25:19End quote.
00:25:23I mean, it's so honest and it's awesome because you kind of knew it.
00:25:29Don is so active on Twitter when Twitter likes were public, which
00:25:34God, so sad.
00:25:35So sad.
00:25:36Elon, what has happened?
00:25:38What has happened to our site?
00:25:41But that was always great to see like, oh, Don Orsillo like this tweet, like shitting
00:25:45on the Red Sox or shitting on Ness and like, oh, it's kind of salacious that he went and
00:25:52did that.
00:25:53Now he'll just straight up quote tweet something that's like, you know, Red Sox biggest mistake
00:25:59ever was letting Don Orsillo go and he'll quote tweet it and be like, thanks, I appreciate
00:26:02the support.
00:26:03Like now it's like he needs to let people know, you know, it wasn't a surprise there,
00:26:08but it is like a quote outside of the PR fences.
00:26:13Absolutely.
00:26:13I'm just not realizing the way he should take this because I feel like it's been a
00:26:17while.
00:26:18What I would love to see is if he would go, if he directly would go after Dave O'Brien.
00:26:23I know it's not going to happen, but can you imagine if he just started like quote
00:26:28tweeting home run calls?
00:26:30And we're just like, wow, a lot of energy here.
00:26:33You can just like, just imagine just like subtweeting Dave O'Brien and just go on after
00:26:40creating a rivalry between the two.
00:26:43Oh, that would be so funny.
00:26:45Maybe I'll make a Don Orsillo burner or maybe somebody should and start tweeting at
00:26:53Dave O'Brien.
00:26:53You think we could get OB to bite on a fake account?
00:26:56I don't know that he gets very active on Twitter, but I could be wrong.
00:27:00Doesn't seem to be a guy.
00:27:03I mean, here's the thing.
00:27:03I don't think he needs to go at him publicly because I think they actually hate each other
00:27:07behind closed doors.
00:27:09Do you think Dave O'Brien hates Orsillo?
00:27:12I mean, what do you mean?
00:27:17Well, explicar.
00:27:21Um, no, I'm going to write that down.
00:27:25That timestamp.
00:27:26And I'm going to bleep that actually.
00:27:29Because I don't know if that's as I said it.
00:27:31I was like, I think somebody told me that.
00:27:35I don't think that everybody knows that.
00:27:37I like that.
00:27:39Okay, my bad.
00:27:40Well, now you know that.
00:27:42So there you go.
00:27:45Yeah, I remember.
00:27:46Yeah.
00:27:47Yeah.
00:27:48So no, I don't think they're a fan of each other.
00:27:50I think it is.
00:27:52I think it is mutually.
00:27:55I can't believe that just like slipped like that.
00:27:58That's crazy.
00:27:58I'm glad this isn't a live show.
00:28:00Yeah.
00:28:02Yeah, no, they're not fans of each other whatsoever.
00:28:05So I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
00:28:10I don't think they need to be public about it.
00:28:11I think it's kind of known inside that they have their thing.
00:28:16The fact that Nesson chose the people they did stunning to me to everybody.
00:28:23But here we are.
00:28:25Weird to get a TC game in game three of this series.
00:28:28Weird.
00:28:28Whatever TC calls a game.
00:28:30It feels like I don't want this to come off wrong because I love Tom Karen.
00:28:35And I want Tom back on the show.
00:28:39But it feels almost like putting out a lineup that's, you know, without Devers
00:28:46or, you know, without Cassis on when he's healthy.
00:28:50It feels kind of like that.
00:28:51You know what I mean?
00:28:52Like, they're like, oh, they didn't even get Dave out of bed today.
00:28:56That is a shocking take by you, given your lack of appreciation for Dave O'Brien.
00:29:05And rightfully so, because I actually my only note from this series was I was
00:29:12surprised how much I like to have a DC in the booth.
00:29:15Not surprised, but I was like, I guess I just I didn't know he was doing it today.
00:29:20And I was like, wow, this is actually like I liked his energy more than Dave's.
00:29:27So I actually was.
00:29:28That's for sure.
00:29:30I don't mean I don't mean that as like a slight at TC's work at all.
00:29:37I really like what he does, but it's like TC is somebody who's always in the building.
00:29:44You know what I mean?
00:29:45They always have TC around.
00:29:46He's like the face of Nessun.
00:29:47We said that to him the last time he was on here.
00:29:49He's the face of Nessun.
00:29:50So to put him in the booth, it's like you always have him around.
00:29:55You know what I mean?
00:29:56It's like, yeah, it feels like a sick day.
00:30:01Rather than feeling like some special occasion where it's like, oh, we got this guy.
00:30:07It's like, well, it's absolutely you're right.
00:30:09And you probably just I mean, you know that from I mean, the last I talked to my
00:30:15at that rain out game, we get the last game to get Toronto that went an inning.
00:30:18And we did talk about because it was behind the scenes.
00:30:23I was told once there was going to be like a part time
00:30:28sideline reporter, kind of like how like Jermai started last year.
00:30:32And it had to have been not true at all, because that never came to fruition.
00:30:35It was somebody that works at Nessun that I thought was going to get elevated.
00:30:40Whatever.
00:30:41We talked about that.
00:30:41And he's like, yeah, from out like, you know, TC comes in.
00:30:44And then Pellerin moves to the desk.
00:30:46And so the show was around.
00:30:47And then they clearly I mean, OB and you have both been talking about this extended break
00:30:53where they're clearly getting some time off here that started with the Friday night Apple
00:30:57game.
00:30:58And then they're giving them like it seems like a couple series off.
00:31:01So that is exactly what's happening, where it's a, you know, one guy's out and everyone
00:31:05else is just moving up the depth chart.
00:31:07But I liked it.
00:31:08I actually think our backup, actually, our third string announcer is better than our
00:31:13best one.
00:31:14I don't know where Monaco was.
00:31:15That's kind of weird.
00:31:16But Monaco's Monaco's not your backup.
00:31:20Monaco's not your backup.
00:31:22He's too good.
00:31:24He's gifted, man.
00:31:25He's Tom Brady.
00:31:26Dave O'Brien is drew blood.
00:31:27So technically, at one point, that was the backup situation.
00:31:31That was the quarterback's room.
00:31:33And that's what we're doing.
00:31:33But it's like if Tom Brady also like went and started a game for the Rams, you know,
00:31:38that's true, too.
00:31:39That's true, too.
00:31:40He is doing work elsewhere, I suppose.
00:31:42Yeah.
00:31:42So he's not your backup because he's like, you know, winning a championship in the CFL
00:31:48or something.
00:31:48Okay.
00:31:49Yeah.
00:31:50I changed my own analogy, but you know what I mean?
00:31:52Like, I think I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if we never saw Monaco on Nessun again.
00:31:59I hate to hear that.
00:32:00Yeah, that's not insider information or anything.
00:32:03That's just my gut.
00:32:05I feel like price goes up day by day, and they would have done it if they were going
00:32:10to do it.
00:32:10And then they announced OB's extension.
00:32:12And like, why would you just I don't know.
00:32:14I would imagine to like fly Monaco back here and whatever.
00:32:18It's probably not cheap because he's always on the road because he's always doing stuff.
00:32:24So I hope he finds a home.
00:32:26I love him enough to let him go, Mike Monaco.
00:32:30I'd prefer to keep him.
00:32:33Well, sure.
00:32:34I also would have preferred to keep my dog.
00:32:37But my dad told me we love him enough.
00:32:40We have to let him go.
00:32:41We opened the sliding door to the porch and said our goodbyes.
00:32:48What?
00:32:51We loved our dog so much.
00:32:52We let him go.
00:32:53That can't be the true story.
00:32:56That's what that phrase means, right?
00:32:59When you feel that feeling, you're like, oh, I think I actually love.
00:33:03No, I said I'm free.
00:33:05Dogs want to be free.
00:33:07Did he want to be free forever?
00:33:09Is that a home?
00:33:11Food?
00:33:11Well, we let him out the day we moved, so I don't know.
00:33:22You got any more topics?
00:33:24The Zander Tribute video, huh?
00:33:26Let's talk about it.
00:33:27Let's do that instead.
00:33:29Zander, the Zander Tribute.
00:33:34It's a gross situation.
00:33:36It's a gross situation.
00:33:37I also hate talking about Mookie and Zander.
00:33:40Obviously, those conversations go hand in hand.
00:33:43But as I've said for a couple years now, the Zander one just feels worse
00:33:53because it was post-Mookie.
00:33:55And the whole thing is that they were supposed to be able to keep Zander
00:34:01because of the Mookie situation.
00:34:03And Zander always felt more Boston than Mookie felt.
00:34:07Mookie was a superstar who was here.
00:34:10And it would have been sick to keep that superstar here.
00:34:15And you didn't.
00:34:18He said enough of the right things.
00:34:19They're like, yeah, I would have signed here and I loved it here and whatever.
00:34:22But did you feel it?
00:34:24Did any of us feel it?
00:34:27Zander had taken a hometown discount by the time he was a free agent already.
00:34:32No, I mean Mookie.
00:34:33No, I'm saying the difference that you're talking about here is Mookie said,
00:34:41yeah, I would have liked to stay in Boston.
00:34:44Zander took millions of dollars less to stay in Boston the first time he had free agency.
00:34:50That's the difference.
00:34:52There's a reason for that.
00:34:53He was also the vocal leader in the shortstop and played the most games ever at shortstop
00:34:58for the Red Sox.
00:34:59And yeah, he was just, that's who he was.
00:35:02And he's also been in the organization since he was like 16.
00:35:06He also didn't have to go through, Mookie didn't have to go through the tough times
00:35:10and be the voice during tough times.
00:35:13Like I guess 2019, like that's in the grand scheme of the tough times that Boston Red
00:35:18Sox have been through over the past handful of years.
00:35:222019 is not the tough years.
00:35:24You know, that was the intro.
00:35:25It's also usually a tough time.
00:35:28It's like a multi-year stretch, like right now or like 14 to 15, which technically he
00:35:32was involved in.
00:35:33But at that point, you're just trying to get your footing and prove you're a big leader.
00:35:35That doesn't really count.
00:35:36You're not the guy that has to talk for those things.
00:35:38You still got Ortiz at that point.
00:35:40But you know, you go in, you went into 19, you had the best off season of your entire
00:35:45life, probably like in terms of like parades and parties and championships and all that
00:35:50stuff.
00:35:50And then you go into spring training with the team exactly the same, essentially.
00:35:54So you think you're going to win 100 games, 110 games.
00:35:57And you don't even know it's a bad season until maybe June, July, because, you know,
00:36:04they got off the gate horrible, but it's like, we're the reigning champs.
00:36:08Like, yeah, we had a bad West Coast series to open the year.
00:36:11We'll go on a seven game run and this will all be fine.
00:36:14It was really only a bad few months when you realize that this 2019 team really isn't just
00:36:19an extension of the 18 team.
00:36:20And it's not one series away from just clicking and then they're good again.
00:36:25So you're right.
00:36:26I think there was really no tough times for him from like, what was cool about his arc
00:36:32is he just, they actually got better like every year from like 14 to 18.
00:36:37Yeah.
00:36:38He just got to, and he got a bigger and bigger role.
00:36:41Yeah.
00:36:41He got to be the guy, the guy, the guy.
00:36:44And then even in 19, when they were sucking, it was like, there was the most of the talk
00:36:50was just about trading him.
00:36:51I don't think people were really coming up to him being like, you know, Hey, what's going
00:36:55on with the struggle?
00:36:55I'm sure those conversations happened, you know, whatever, but the prevailing headlines
00:37:00were not, you know, Mookie bets answers for Red Sox six game losing streak.
00:37:05It was, do you want to stay here?
00:37:09Are they going to trade you?
00:37:10Do you want to hit free agency?
00:37:12Like it was none of that or it was all of that.
00:37:15So the fact that Xander was here one for another playoff run in 21, but then also had to be
00:37:24the voice when things were poopy, uh, that, uh, in, in 2022, he just, he felt more Boston.
00:37:40And I think sometimes we forget about him one because he's hurt right now.
00:37:45And because he's not making the headlines the way Mookie does, you know, it gets thrown
00:37:50in your face when you see like, you know, Mookie's leading the league and 12 different
00:37:54categories.
00:37:56Everybody wants to talk about how did Boston let this guy go?
00:37:59And I'll talk about that until 2085.
00:38:03But with Xander, you kind of forget a little bit, but on the big screen at Fenway plan,
00:38:09X going, give it to you.
00:38:11And seeing just, we talked about it last week that how, how distinctive his motions are
00:38:16and how has so his silhouette is so fucking unique.
00:38:19And to see like the steps he takes out of the box or just his swing in a red Sox uniform
00:38:25again, it was frustrating.
00:38:29It was really frustrating more than I expected it to be.
00:38:32I would have brought it up last week, last episode.
00:38:36If I expected those feelings to come out, I, I really didn't.
00:38:39It wasn't until I saw it that it smacked me in the mouth.
00:38:42I was like, wow, this sucks all over again.
00:38:46And you could have a long conversation about where he would fit and how he's dropped off
00:38:51and blah, blah, blah.
00:38:52And the price tag and all that doesn't matter.
00:38:56It just still doesn't matter to me.
00:38:58Just, this is, it brought it all up for me.
00:39:00It pissed me off again.
00:39:03That's interesting.
00:39:04Yeah, I, for me, first of all, when you were talking about like all the, you know, him
00:39:13wanting to be here, you all started living out the fact that he literally like signed
00:39:18a $280 million deal to leave and was just like moping around and like on cam, people
00:39:23caught him on camera just being like, I guess I'll take the deal.
00:39:28Um, like he, he was in a bar by himself.
00:39:33Wasn't he like by himself in a bar when just like he told a fan before he told, uh, the
00:39:38public.
00:39:39And he was at, uh, the Suns game.
00:39:41That's when, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:39:43And he, uh, he was just, he was just sad that he doesn't even, so that's how much he wanted
00:39:49to be here.
00:39:49He sent a $280 million deal and it was like, it ruined his day and it wasn't with Boston.
00:39:54Um, but yeah, I think for me, I guess I, I write so much and I did talk about the, the
00:40:02over like how each decision impacts the greater good.
00:40:06And even if he had signed a five year, a hundred million dollar deal, we would be like, this
00:40:12is bad.
00:40:13This is really bad.
00:40:14Like, I know, I know he's your guy and there's that, that loyalty.
00:40:18And I usually am much more on that side of like, I don't even care.
00:40:21It's Xander Bogarts.
00:40:22I want to root for Xander Bogarts and there is totally that, but it's hard for me to like
00:40:27be like, oh man, I'm really sad about this.
00:40:30We really, cause I don't, I think it's the right move and I can't get over the fact that
00:40:34it was just the absolute right move to move on.
00:40:36And I was wrong.
00:40:37Like I, I, when he was, I was pissed when we didn't re-sign him.
00:40:41Mostly pissed that you could have got him on a discount in the, in the spring training
00:40:46instead of letting him walk.
00:40:47But now I'm looking at it and even that spring training low ball deal that absolutely was
00:40:51a low ball deal would have been a bad contract.
00:40:54And was it, did they know more about the risks or is that just, it, well, I mean, it was,
00:40:59it was somewhere in the, like people were talking about like five, six years, a hundred
00:41:05ish million, maybe even one 20 to one 50.
00:41:08But like, generally speaking, the idea was like, it would have been significantly less
00:41:13like on the absolute high end, one 50, probably somewhere in the 100 to one 20 range, like
00:41:20six for one 25 for a hundred.
00:41:22That was speculation is that that was what it would have taken.
00:41:26Had they done it in the spring training instead of not really trying in spring training and
00:41:31then low balling the shit out of them and then letting him get 280 in free agency.
00:41:35But maybe they, I don't know, maybe they knew more about the risk.
00:41:40I think it was probably them just being cheap and I'm giving them too much credit, but I
00:41:44can't be too, too upset about this Andrew stuff.
00:41:46Cause it, I mean, even if he had signed a two year, $20 million deal, I don't know necessarily.
00:41:53I know he had, he was solid last year, but like two years, 40 million would have been
00:41:57like, that wasn't probably our best deal.
00:42:02If he was a free agent this off season, what would you want him to do?
00:42:06If he was a free agent this off season?
00:42:08Yeah.
00:42:09Like this winter, the Red Sox could, could acquire him hypothetically.
00:42:12Would you want them to do that?
00:42:13Well, I don't think that's the same thing.
00:42:16I think there's just something to be said about what it did for the perception
00:42:21of the organization.
00:42:25I just don't think it ever should have happened.
00:42:26Like putting your fans through that again.
00:42:28I think that's what I'm upset about more than anything.
00:42:31Okay.
00:42:32Like, I know that there, I know that there's been a fall off.
00:42:34I'm in no world have I ever said that they, the Red Sox should have given him 11 years,
00:42:38$280 million.
00:42:39No one said that.
00:42:40We all knew that was dumb, but what about 5-1-50?
00:42:43If you could go back and make him sign it?
00:42:45Yeah.
00:42:47You would still want him to do that?
00:42:49Yeah.
00:42:49Yeah.
00:42:50Oh.
00:42:50Because they can do that.
00:42:51They can do that.
00:42:55Yeah.
00:42:55But then you're in luxury tax.
00:42:57You don't get to reset the luxury tax last year.
00:42:59This year have $24 million of space below the luxury tax.
00:43:04So they would be what?
00:43:05Six over?
00:43:05But last year they wouldn't have gotten under, which means they would have had to reset it this.
00:43:09Well, I guess they did reset it this year, but it's still, that still would be,
00:43:12now you're losing 6 million.
00:43:13So you're, you're talking about losing a few players.
00:43:17Maybe you don't ever sign.
00:43:19And now I guess, like Giolito was the big signing.
00:43:23So maybe that kind of works out.
00:43:25But then you'd be without Giolito.
00:43:28Yeah.
00:43:29We go another way of path, but it's just, I don't know.
00:43:31And then you have another infielder.
00:43:32I don't know if you just, I don't know.
00:43:34I love, look, I love Bogarts.
00:43:36I wish he retired to Boston.
00:43:37I hope he dominates the next nine years of his contract, which is,
00:43:44it seems like he's on his last.
00:43:45That's insane.
00:43:47But, but boy, I, yeah, I don't know.
00:43:51I love him.
00:43:52I guess I've just moved on easier than I, than I did with Mookie.
00:43:56I was also younger and maybe that was why.
00:44:00You were younger when, with the Mookie stuff.
00:44:03I feel like you were, yeah.
00:44:04How old were you when Mookie got traded?
00:44:06It was only, I mean, what, two years?
00:44:08I was, I was still in college.
00:44:12I was junior, it was my junior year.
00:44:13I actually remember exactly where I was.
00:44:16It was in my dorm room, not dorm, whatever it's called.
00:44:19It was housing, college housing.
00:44:23I was in my, like sitting at my desk.
00:44:29So yeah, I don't know, junior year of college to
00:44:33a year or so removed from college.
00:44:36I feel like there's a lot of mental, like emotional development where
00:44:39it didn't hit as, quite as hard.
00:44:42I guess.
00:44:43I also talk about the team every day.
00:44:45And I think that honestly is probably better than the majority of it.
00:44:48It's just that it's become partly more work for me than fandom,
00:44:52which we've talked about before.
00:44:56I don't think I'll ever get there.
00:44:57I don't think it's possible.
00:44:59I don't want it to.
00:45:02I'm with you.
00:45:03I wish it was that way.

00:46:09Not a bad idea to put together.
00:46:11Oh, I don't know.
00:46:12Jaron Duran, maybe Connor Wong.
00:46:16Put a couple of those guys together.
00:46:18Maybe see what happens.
00:46:19That's all I'm saying.

00:46:35All right, Scott, you got some thoughts because it's time to empty your brain of thoughts with
00:46:38Joey and Scott.
00:46:40Empty that brain of yours, dude.
00:46:41What do you got?
00:46:44I thought TC was pretty good in the booth.
00:46:49See, we already did that, but that was my thought.
00:46:51That was what I had for this segment.
00:46:54That was what you got?
00:46:55TC was good.
00:46:56TC's good.
00:46:57Rafaela, catch the home runs.
00:46:59He brought the energy when it was required upon him, which is the bare minimum, but we
00:47:03haven't had that in a while.
00:47:05The play, it's short too.
00:47:07My god.
00:47:08The play, it's short.
00:47:10Where he, the move to his left.
00:47:12Oh my goodness gracious.
00:47:15So, liked it.
00:47:19We should do more of the energy in the booth.
00:47:23For sure.
00:47:25We didn't talk about the monster game last series.
00:47:27When they were on the monster.
00:47:29I don't really get the appeal of them doing the show on the monster if you're not going
00:47:32to show them a lot.
00:47:33I feel like they didn't show them enough.
00:47:35Whatever.
00:47:36I don't think it would have been appealing either way.
00:47:37I think it's a cool thing for them, but I don't think it adds anything to the broadcast.
00:47:41In fact, Dave O'Brien was pretty transparent about how it makes it significantly harder
00:47:45to broadcast the game and that he spent the first inning being like, hey, just so you
00:47:49know, I'm going to suck even more today because I can't even see if a ball goes up in the
00:47:55air.
00:47:56I don't know if it's a pop up, a home run or behind the plate, a foul ball.
00:48:01So yeah, I don't think it does anything for the viewers.
00:48:04I think it's just like fun for them.
00:48:07And I think because it's the people at Nesson being like, let's do a game on the monster.
00:48:13All of the people involved in that production probably get excited about the idea that
00:48:17it's cooler for them.
00:48:18But yeah, I don't know if it does much for the fans.
00:48:20Unless you had like, you know, a side camera like, you know, like they do with the Jared
00:48:25broadcast now, like to have like a side cam of them on the monster.
00:48:28But then even then, that just distracts.
00:48:30Yeah, they're not doing anything on the monster side.
00:48:32I don't think that was the missing piece.
00:48:33I just think it was just.
00:48:36I don't know what I did like about it was that it was the Celtics parade day and there
00:48:40were interviews and stuff that was cool.
00:48:42It did feel like they made it into like a like a bigger like a holiday type of thing
00:48:47or like a playoff game or something.
00:48:49But that was more coincidental than anything.
00:48:52I think I mean, the interview is definitely not.
00:48:54But they I don't know, they did some cool stuff.
00:48:56That was a great game.
00:48:57One of the most fun experiences ever, because that was the comeback when we for some reason
00:49:01didn't really talk about last week.
00:49:02But that was probably the best game of the season.
00:49:04But I don't know if that was why.
00:49:09Yeah, that that that did kind of get lost on us in everything that we talked about last
00:49:13show.
00:49:14Yeah, didn't didn't really give that game.
00:49:17It's love as much as we could.
00:49:18I don't know if we did it at all.
00:49:19I was thinking of it actively while we were recording, but it's never really fit any spot
00:49:24that we picked.
00:49:25We talked about reality TV plenty.
00:49:29That we did that we did.
00:49:31I I started Love Island this week because of our conversation.
00:49:38Oh, well, I know.
00:49:39I know that there was some external pressure to start that over the Netflix ones.
00:49:44But I'm telling you, you got to get to the Netflix ones.
00:49:46Well, I don't have Netflix.
00:49:50That is surprising.
00:49:53Why is that surprising?
00:49:54I feel like most everybody.
00:49:55I don't know if I know anybody that doesn't have Netflix.
00:49:58I feel like when the price went up, everybody got it.
00:50:02Because like, well, I don't know, what do I need to?
00:50:05I don't know what it's one of those like, what do I need it for things now?
00:50:09TV and they have some good shows.
00:50:15They got they got movies on there.
00:50:17They got movies and Netflix originals.
00:50:22Now they have games for some reason.
00:50:25Dude, do you remember a couple years ago?
00:50:28They had that episode of Black Mirror where you could like choose your own adventure?
00:50:33Nope, never seen an episode of Black Mirror where you could like choose your own adventure.
00:50:38It's like you choose whether, you know, the guy goes into the room or if he
00:50:43fucking looks at his phone or whatever.
00:50:44I don't know.
00:50:46And it was it didn't really work too great.
00:50:48It was it was.
00:50:50Oh, what was it called?
00:50:51Bander Dash.
00:50:52I think it was what it's called.
00:50:55They're trying to add games on there for some reason.
00:50:58And what does that mean?
00:51:00Like you can I've never clicked on them.
00:51:02But like now you'll see like top 10 movies, top 10 shows.
00:51:05And then they'll just be like, like computer games you would play when you were in school,
00:51:09like cool math type games.
00:51:10Like if you remember, like cool math and like mini clip and what like those type of games
00:51:15like you want to hear you want to hear throwback Bloons Tower Defense.
00:51:18You remember that?
00:51:20Yeah.
00:51:21So I found this out by accident on my phone.
00:51:25You can there's an there you can sign Bloons Tower Defense six is like a five dollar app,
00:51:31which I could be a millionaire.
00:51:33I will never pay for an app.
00:51:35But you can for some reason sign into your Netflix past like account and get in for free.
00:51:42And so me and Steve would just play.
00:51:44You can play co-op on your phones.
00:51:46And we just get like if there was like a like a game like while we're watching a
00:51:49soundbite scam or something, we just play co-op Bloons Tower Defense on our phone.
00:51:53And we got too good at it got boring.
00:51:54Like it would make it around like 200.
00:51:56And it would just like break our phones.
00:51:59Wait, so this is this only on the app?
00:52:02Well, you it looks like you can click on it in the games.
00:52:05But when I'm on Netflix, I'm never like what to watch.
00:52:08Oh, actually, no, I'm going to play Tower Defense game instead.
00:52:12I'm saying like on your TV.
00:52:14Could you do it on the TV?
00:52:15I don't I don't I guess not.
00:52:18I so I only do it on the computer because for some reason on our TV, it knows that we're
00:52:22so like we me and Steve admittedly, we don't have our own Netflix as we just both of our
00:52:26families do.
00:52:27What the fuck you're just giving me shit for not having a Netflix?
00:52:30Well, no, but I mean, like, why you should have a Netflix because somebody, you know,
00:52:34shit like your parents, some like someone, everyone has a share.
00:52:38They crack down on the password sharing.
00:52:40So that wasn't the case until literally this month for us.
00:52:45So now I don't know the answer to your question about the TV.
00:52:48I can still log on on my laptop can't on the TV.
00:52:50Don't know why.
00:52:51Also, Steve's account has got figured out.
00:52:53We haven't tried mine yet.
00:52:54So we might be OK, but but too lazy to switch.
00:53:00Well, good luck to you.
00:53:01So those are my thoughts.
00:53:03I didn't expect those to be my empty.
00:53:05My thoughts.
00:53:05But there we are.
00:53:07Well.
00:53:09Well, thank you for sharing this.
00:53:11And if you want to share your thoughts, you can follow us on the socials at Joey Capone.
00:53:17But why are you like wrapping up?
00:53:21Just because it's been like an hour.
00:53:22And we've talked about the series.
00:53:25No, a series MVP.
00:53:26We only do when they win the series.
00:53:28They lost the series.
00:53:29We'll pick a Padre, obviously.
00:53:33No, I actually hate that idea.
00:53:36All right, fine.
00:53:37Then I guess we'll just jump into the pitching preview.
00:53:42Oh, OK, folks, it is three games against the Miami Littoral Marlins.
00:53:48Game one is going to be Valente Bellozo versus Cutter Crawford.
00:53:53Valente Bellozo is this guy's name.
00:53:57He has made one major league start.
00:53:59Five shutout innings against the Royals.
00:54:01He is fine.
00:54:0339 Ks and 31 in the third AA innings.
00:54:07Cutter Crawford finishes June with a 444 ERA across four starts in the month.
00:54:15A 590 FIP.
00:54:17Cutter's ERA first touched two on May 13th against the Rays.
00:54:22Eight starts prior to that.
00:54:23Eight starts since.
00:54:24His first eight starts of the year landed him with an ERA of 175.
00:54:29And the eight since his ERA, 544.
00:54:35Game two is going to be Trevor Rodgers versus Brian Bello.
00:54:40Trevor Rodgers has consistently sucked.
00:54:42He has allowed four more runs five times this year.
00:54:45He did not pitch six innings into a start until June.
00:54:511.78 Ks per walk.
00:54:55Bad.
00:54:56Brian Bello.
00:54:58Brian the beautiful.
00:54:59Beautiful Brian, also bad.
00:55:01He's made 14 starts this year.
00:55:03The first seven, 396 ERA.
00:55:07229 batting average against.
00:55:10The seven since, a 720 ERA, 310 average against.
00:55:16That is so bad.
00:55:18That is so bad.
00:55:21Game three is going to be Kyle Tyler versus Nick Pavetta.
00:55:27Kyle Tyler has two first names.
00:55:29He also has two major league starts.
00:55:32Four innings and four and two thirds.
00:55:34He throws his cutter 47% of the time.
00:55:36It's getting hit at a 352 clip.
00:55:40His curve and his slider are better.
00:55:41He's whatever.
00:55:43Nick Pavetta is Canadian.
00:55:46Coming into the first start of the year following Canada Day.
00:55:49Last year, his first outing after Canada Day was four innings out of the bullpen against Toronto,
00:55:53where he allowed two hits in one run.
00:55:55In 2021, his first start after Canada Day was seven scoreless innings against Oakland.
00:56:01Could we see another Nick Pavetta Canada Day gem?
00:56:05Dude's Canadian.
00:56:07And that is going to do it for your pitching preview.
00:56:11Scott, they got a sweep, brother.
00:56:15They got a sweep it.
00:56:16They got a sweep it.
00:56:17I'm going to call it.
00:56:18These guys all suck balls.
00:56:20They've got to beat all of these guys.
00:56:22These guys all suck.
00:56:24This needs to be a bounce back for all of these guys.
00:56:26I don't know how much you pay attention during the pitching preview, Scott.
00:56:28So just as a little I know you're locked in the whole time.
00:56:35Yeah.
00:56:36Every single one of these guys, Cutter Crawford, Brian Bayo, Nick Pavetta,
00:56:41incredibly different first and second halves of the first half.
00:56:48Everybody's all trending down.
00:56:50All trending big down.
00:56:54You think sweep?
00:56:57I think they need it.
00:56:59I think they need it.
00:57:00Oh, well, they've needed a lot of things that they've not gotten received since 2020.
00:57:09But this is different.
00:57:11I believe in them now.
00:57:13Because they're good sometimes.
00:57:15They are good sometimes.
00:57:16But those times were in June.
00:57:20Yeah.
00:57:21And what month is it right now?
00:57:23This series starts in July.
00:57:26What month is it right now?
00:57:28June.
00:57:29So they're going to have a really good day tomorrow.
00:57:32Off day.
00:57:35Right.
00:57:36Yeah.
00:57:36They're going to have a great off day.
00:57:39Yeah.
00:57:39I am actually bummed that they couldn't win this series so that they could say they didn't
00:57:44lose a series in June.
00:57:46That kind of sticks.
00:57:46That would have been cool.
00:57:47Yeah.
00:57:47That would have been a cool way to go about it.
00:57:49And yeah, I don't know.
00:57:53I'd love to say sweep.
00:57:54And I do kind of feel a sweep that just feels...
00:57:57When was the last time?
00:57:58I don't know.
00:57:59Sweeps just don't seem realistic, if that's crazy.
00:58:01Even though they did it not very recently.
00:58:04But I want to...
00:58:09I don't know.
00:58:11I mean, the guy, the first guy, what was his name again?
00:58:17Belozo.
00:58:19Valente Belozo.
00:58:21Beloze.
00:58:21The guy Beloze, whatever.
00:58:24This guy Beloze is his own last name.
00:58:26But he was bad in AA, 460RA.
00:58:32Worse in AAA.
00:58:33566, I think.
00:58:35And then he was awesome in his debut.
00:58:38Not to worry about though.
00:58:39So he's bad in AA and AAA.
00:58:41So you think you got him.
00:58:45Rodgers is supposed to be good, but he's not this year.
00:58:51So that one's confusing.
00:58:54And then the other guy I know so nothing about.
00:59:00Sounds like a creative player.
00:59:02Kyle Tyler.
00:59:04Yeah.
00:59:05Two major league starts.
00:59:07338 though.
00:59:08We're facing a guy with a 0 ERA and a guy with a 338 ERA in the same series.
00:59:12And you're confident you got a sweep.
00:59:14I like that you're framing a 338 like that's crazy.
00:59:18Like, god, they're facing a guy with a 338 ERA.
00:59:21Good.
00:59:21That's better than what they're facing probably.
00:59:23Who's going that game?
00:59:24Yeah.
00:59:26Against them, Valente.
00:59:27Howick's the only one.
00:59:29Right.
00:59:29Howick's the only one that has a better ERA than that.
00:59:31So.
00:59:33I still believe Pavetta can have a strong season, even with the...
00:59:37I agree.
00:59:38I don't know.
00:59:38I guess I'll go sweep, but I don't really...
00:59:40They also can't really hit.
00:59:42So you combine those factors.
00:59:43That should work.
00:59:44I just don't...
00:59:45It feels like the Red Sox are starting to do that thing where they mellow out again.
00:59:48And I don't feel as confident in them playing good ball as I did a week ago.
00:59:54It's one series.
00:59:55I mean, a series and a half because they didn't finish the last series.
00:59:58Yeah.
00:59:58But it's one series.
01:00:00I'm trying to remind myself of that.
01:00:02Like we're high up on them.
01:00:04There's still five games over and they got a bad team coming up.
01:00:09Got a bad team coming up.
01:00:11Need to sweep.
01:00:15One last little stat here that I did mean to do in emptying my brain of thoughts.
01:00:19Joey and Scott.
01:00:21Oh, you missed it.
01:00:21So save it for next episode.
01:00:23Well, this is my closing thought then.
01:00:25That's why we have that segment.
01:00:27It's a fail safe.
01:00:28Yep.
01:00:29Raphael Devers.
01:00:30This is courtesy of Sox Notes.
01:00:31JP Long.
01:00:32Shout out, Justin.
01:00:35Raphael Devers.
01:00:3614 home runs since May 15th.
01:00:39His most ever in a 40-game span.
01:00:42How does Devers do record-breaking things, personal best record-breaking things,
01:00:49and not ever feel like he's doing it?
01:00:53It's a good question because that caught me off guard a little bit.
01:00:56I feel like there's been times where he's been hotter.
01:00:58I got to say something that maybe I'm just not appreciative of him more than ever.
01:01:03Maybe it's just a lack of RBI.
01:01:05I'd like to know if this is his lowest RBI total by this point in the year.
01:01:09But I've never noticed him less than I have this year.
01:01:14Other than that...
01:01:14That's not a bad point.
01:01:15That's really not a bad point.
01:01:17It was that one week.
01:01:18It was that one week that I'm sure bolstered those numbers that you just said.
01:01:22What was it?
01:01:23Six games in a row?
01:01:24You had a home run?
01:01:25Seven in six games, I think it was.
01:01:26Mm-hmm.
01:01:31But yeah, I just feel like I haven't felt the presence of Raphael Devers in quite some time.
01:01:37I don't know how we're scoring runs because it seems like everyone on our team has 20 RBIs.
01:01:43But we have a statistically good offense.
01:01:48So let's see this.
01:01:49I want to test your theory.
01:01:50So he has played in 69 games this year and he has 43 RBI.
01:01:57Yeah.
01:01:59Last year, through 69 games, this is excluding maybe the last two games.
01:02:06So excuse that.
01:02:09He had 57 in 2023.
01:02:13In 2022, he had 44.
01:02:25And 2021 is certainly going to be more.
01:02:31He had a whopping 58.
01:02:39So it's down.
01:02:40It's a down.
01:02:41Yeah.
01:02:42Year RBI-wise, I guess.
01:02:49But I do get what you're saying.
01:02:52In a lineup where you went into the year thinking it was maybe going to be a little thin and you
01:02:56really need Devers to be the guy, he has, but in a very quiet way.
01:03:03Well, I think it comes down to a little bit of the Tyler O'Neill effect, I'm going to call it,
01:03:09which is like 60 in homers, 28 RBIs.
01:03:12And it's like, how on earth is that possible?
01:03:15Because it also feels like we get a decent amount of traffic and it doesn't feel like
01:03:18we leave a ton of guys in scoring position.
01:03:20But it's just like, I don't know.
01:03:24I know we are toward the top of the league in solo home runs versus multiple people on base.
01:03:32It just feels like a weird thing going on this year where you're not seeing Devers'
01:03:37three-run blast that really swings a game.
01:03:39It's 4-4 and then he hits one.
01:03:42Now it's 7-4 in the seventh inning.
01:03:45That was a memorable moment.
01:03:48He's doing great.
01:03:49Again, don't want to...
01:03:52Sweet baby boy, as everyone says.
01:03:55I just feel like I haven't had the, oh man, Devers is coming up here.
01:04:02Yeah.
01:04:02Because it feels like there's nobody on.
01:04:03I mean, that's been the case for a couple of years where it doesn't...
01:04:05It never feels like, oh shit, Devers is due up.
01:04:07Look out.
01:04:08And especially in clutch moments.
01:04:10I don't know what that is, but he's just such a good hitter and it's just...
01:04:15It's very rarely the clutch moments.
01:04:17I feel like we don't even have...
01:04:19Again, maybe this is just an insane take, but I feel like there aren't as many close
01:04:22games this year as usual either.
01:04:23I don't remember...
01:04:24The one come from behind win I can remember now is the Blue Jays situation.
01:04:29I think there's been a few because they grab me when they come along.
01:04:31Yeah.
01:04:32Well, the Blue Jays...
01:04:33Excuse me?
01:04:34They grab me when they come along.
01:04:38Okay.
01:04:39And then they've had one four-run...
01:04:45They've overcome one four-run deficit this year.
01:04:47I know that's a stat that's real.
01:04:51So I don't know.
01:04:53Maybe I'm just tripping, but it just feels like I haven't noticed Devers as much as usual.
01:04:58And he's been statistically fantastic again.
01:05:01I just, I don't know.
01:05:01I don't know what that is.
01:05:03Well, three walk-off bombs coming from Raphael Devers this series in Miami.
01:05:08So...
01:05:08Can you imagine?
01:05:09If he had three walk-offs on the road?
01:05:12No, I imagine having that clip.
01:05:14Oh, I didn't even think of it on the road.
01:05:17He can't do it.
01:05:19Right.
01:05:19Yeah.
01:05:20It would be hard.
01:05:21It would definitely be hard to do.
01:05:24To walk off that way.
01:05:26Got faith in him.
01:05:27Got faith in our baby boy.
01:05:28Carita.
01:05:33Un niño poquito.
01:05:37All right.
