00:00Transportation officials in Indiana are building a roadway aimed to wirelessly charge electric cars.
00:08State officials say construction started in April and the segment of road will be able to power both
00:13heavy-duty and passenger electric cars as they travel at highway speeds of up to 65 miles per
00:19hour. Officials behind the project say if tech can power long-haul trucks, it could be a major
00:25game-changer in the effort to reduce emissions, as industry analysts say big-rig trucks are the
00:30most difficult vehicles to decarbonize. Heavy-duty trucks normally require larger batteries due to
00:36their size, weight, and the long distances they travel. However, if trucks could receive power
00:41as they drive, officials believe it would allow them to carry smaller batteries, lowering overall
00:47costs and reducing the number of stops needed to recharge. The state has teamed up with Purdue
00:52University on the project, which officials expect to be completed in May of 2025.
