Malaysia open to joining BRICS for economic benefits, says Tengku Zafrul

Malaysia is open to joining BRICS, the intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, due to its potential economic benefits, said Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.  The Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister mentioned on Tuesday (June 18) that BRICS is currently progressing well, with countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt having recently joined. 00:24Some countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE have also joined IBRICS.

00:31So far, IBRICS development has been smooth, so we are waiting for further discussions.

00:39What are the advantages for Malaysia in terms of trade?

00:42Malaysia is involved in several trading platforms, such as CPTPP.

00:47Recently, I attended a meeting in Singapore with IPEF.

00:52We are also a member of RCEP and ASEAN.

00:57In fact, Malaysia currently has 15 FTAs that we are in charge of,

01:02both national and group FTAs.

01:04So, bilateral and multilateral FTAs.

01:07IBRICS, like IPEF and APEC, is a foreign economy.

01:11We are open to discussions.

01:16We will start discussions on IBRICS.
