00:00:00We'll see you in a minute.
00:00:03Yes, Ni Hao, and welcome to Zhengzhou in China, the birthplace of Kung Fu.
00:00:29And I tell you what, we have got a fight on our hands today in the east of China for the
00:00:35Modern Pentathlon World Championships finals.
00:00:38To end all finals, four Koreans, four Hungarians, two Mexicans, a Swedish, a British, an individual
00:00:44neutral athlete, a Lithuanian, a Turkish, a Chinese, a Swiss, and an Egyptian athlete
00:00:49in the women's competition.
00:00:50With temperatures at 32 degrees, it is sunny, it is hot out there today.
00:00:56There is not too much of a breeze, I don't mind telling you that this morning.
00:01:01Welcome along to final number one then of today's event.
00:01:05We start with the riding for final number one in the women's event.
00:01:09Ten fences.
00:01:10Mariam Amur and I will go through the riding course with you in a few moments' time.
00:01:16Seven points for a penalty for a fence down, ten for a refusal.
00:01:21Then on to the fencing bonus round for the one-on-one bouts, that's the conclusion of
00:01:26the fencing action.
00:01:27Winner stays on format.
00:01:28Over to the pool.
00:01:29200-meter freestyle in a 25-meter pool here in Zhengzhou, 230 is the time.
00:01:34And we conclude with the thrilling, and it has been thrilling in the last few days, let
00:01:40me tell you that, laser run where our athletes will complete five laps over the 600-meter
00:01:46track and circuit.
00:01:48They will visit the shooting range with their laser pistol four times, shoot five targets
00:01:53from 10 meters in 50 seconds or less.
00:01:56They will then complete the rest of the lap.
00:01:59First over the line wins gold.
00:02:01It is a handicap start in our final and Olympic format.
00:02:05The World Championship finals and medals are up for grabs today.
00:02:10This is it.
00:02:12There are the Olympic rankings at this stage.
00:02:15Mariam Amur is next to me.
00:02:16Good morning.
00:02:17Good morning.
00:02:18I'm excited for this final.
00:02:19Yes.
00:02:20Just to reflect on those Olympic rankings, top four in the Olympic rankings have actually
00:02:25opted to not come to the World Championships.
00:02:28They want to train and make sure they're ready for the Olympic Games, which is going to be
00:02:32interesting.
00:02:33I mean, after this competition, obviously, the Olympic rankings will be updated and some
00:02:38of the athletes will be meddling, will be moving up the rankings.
00:02:43As we take a look at the other athletes.
00:02:45The fencing ranking round took place a few days ago and the ranking points do carry over.
00:02:55You can see our athlete, Elodie Cluvel, in the foreground, hasn't made it through to
00:02:59the women's final today.
00:03:01She missed out by one place, so she will be devastated, but good for her yesterday to
00:03:06see success in the men's event for her partner.
00:03:09And there are the fencing results by ranking in the ranking round.
00:03:14So the riding that we'll see for the first time today will start in reverse order.
00:03:18And before we see our first athlete, Mariam, for our viewers at home around the world,
00:03:24they will see the beautiful pictures that we'll display in the next hour and a half
00:03:27and think, that looks beautiful, looks gorgeous, the stadium, and it is out of this world.
00:03:32I'm fortunate to have seen some international stadia.
00:03:36There aren't many better than I've seen.
00:03:37There are some, but not many.
00:03:39This is in the top five.
00:03:41As an athlete, put your athlete hat on, what are the conditions like to compete?
00:03:45Okay, so these athletes have obviously been through qualifications, semifinals, so they
00:03:51have competed in those conditions already.
00:03:54I think today is a bit cooler, though, so it might be a bit more forgiving in terms
00:03:59of the heat and the weather.
00:04:00Which will affect the riding as well, and that's the course, and it's a tough course.
00:04:04It is, I think, going to be a tough one.
00:04:07Very tight turns in the course.
00:04:08Well, talking of turns, here we go, Mariam, you can talk us through it.
00:04:11Here is a rider with a camera strapped to their chest.
00:04:15This is a rider stroke horse's eye view.
00:04:18Tight.
00:04:19It is very tight, and again, we talk about how important it is to take those lines correctly
00:04:25into the fences.
00:04:26You want to be centred, and because the course is very tight, sometimes the horse could go
00:04:31for the wrong fence, so you need to make sure that you're really manoeuvring the horse correctly
00:04:35and you are in control, because if you lose control for a second, that could be devastating
00:04:40for your score and for your competition.
00:04:43You can see just how tight, even in the riding POV, some of the lines aren't that clean.
00:04:48It is very, very tough.
00:04:50I think the toughest we've had all season, but these athletes are up for the challenge.
00:04:54They're the elite of the elite, best 18 in the world, and if anyone can do it, it's them.
00:05:00And you can see from this camera angle, from this shot, it's tight, Mariam.
00:05:08It's tight.
00:05:09We just walked it.
00:05:10You and I just walked the course, and it's tight.
00:05:11It's going to be a test for our athletes.
00:05:12It's the World Championship Finals, Conditions plus course.
00:05:15I mean, it's going to be tough.
00:05:16Yeah, a lot of skill required to make your way around this course.
00:05:22And skill, because again, a reminder for the uninitiated, they've only just got the horse.
00:05:26They're drawn out of that.
00:05:28Yeah, and they have 20 minutes to familiarize themselves with the horse, as well as warm
00:05:32up in those 20 minutes.
00:05:33So it's not a lot of time.
00:05:35The athletes have seen the horses, though, perform in the horse inspection a couple of
00:05:40days ago.
00:05:41So they'll be familiar with what they need to do.
00:05:44Will they wear spurs?
00:05:45Will they go for a whip?
00:05:47Depends on the horse and what the horse needs to get a move on.
00:05:51We wish every athlete well here in the women's final of the World Championships in Zhengzhou
00:05:572024.
00:05:59Good luck to everybody.
00:06:00Yeah, Haiyan Zhang from Korea, first up in the arena.
00:06:04Just 19 years old, heads into the arena and a clear first fence, and that will be pleasing.
00:06:12It's so tight into two there, Marion.
00:06:14Yeah, but she has good pace.
00:06:16She's not too fast, which means the horse can kind of see those fences beforehand.
00:06:20You can see it was an oblique line into three.
00:06:23And the time limit, incidentally, is a minute here.
00:06:26So point deductions for every second over the time limit.
00:06:30Yeah, this is looking good for Haiyan Zhang.
00:06:34Again, a very tight left turn into six, and you can see a refusal there.
00:06:39Not much room to maneuver if you're not close to the perimeter of the riding arena.
00:06:45You will get caught out on those turns.
00:06:47Zhang does get over at the second time of Askin, so that will be a 10-point deduction.
00:06:52It's a quick and tight turn, but it's a level of success.
00:06:57The horse seems to have settled rather well there, Marion.
00:06:59Yeah, he's looking good now.
00:07:00Again, another tight turn into nine.
00:07:03Very tight.
00:07:04Look at that.
00:07:05She's doing really well.
00:07:08Very well.
00:07:08There's going to be a short time penalty as well.
00:07:10Was there 103 plus the refusal?
00:07:15Yeah, so it's going to be a 287 for Haiyan Zhang.
00:07:19That's a good score.
00:07:20287 for the athlete that competed in Egypt two years ago as a 17-year-old in the World
00:07:26Championship Finals, finishing 13th.
00:07:29So experience as a youngster.
00:07:31There's actually a good mix of youth and experience here this morning in Zhengzhou.
00:07:36But after that refusal, Marion, she did rather well to recover.
00:07:39She did well to recover.
00:07:41She did well to recover, and honestly, as you said, not much experience from her in the seniors.
00:07:48So it's good that she pulled off a great ride.
00:07:51Mingyu Zhang of China is next in.
00:07:55Yeah, home favorite for sure.
00:07:57We have the crowd gathering in the stands to watch on their Chinese athletes competing
00:08:04in the finals.
00:08:05And a beautiful horse.
00:08:06Beautiful, great.
00:08:10The horses are cared for perfectly here.
00:08:14A horse.
00:08:17Xiao Bai.
00:08:18For Zhang.
00:08:20Yeah, Xiao Bai, very good.
00:08:24Okay, salutes the judges, and we'll be on our way now.
00:08:28I'm under 10 fences.
00:08:31These athletes have to go through to complete the ride, and time starts as soon as they
00:08:36go past the timing gate.
00:08:39That is a very risky line into two, but manages it well.
00:08:44And how do you pay off a risky line in a final versus a second or two?
00:08:49What's the payoff there, Marion?
00:08:50Definitely lose a second or two.
00:08:52You think so?
00:08:53Yeah, if a second or two is much more forgiving than a refusal.
00:08:58I mean, a refusal is 10 points already, and you probably will lose some time with that
00:09:02as well, because you do have to go back around.
00:09:03So weighing the risks, I think, if you go slower and take your time, is so much better
00:09:09than risking a penalty.
00:09:11But this is good from Zhang.
00:09:12A beautiful shot of the arena, by the way.
00:09:14She makes her way into 9 and 10 now.
00:09:17Final two fences.
00:09:20There is no problem with the time here.
00:09:22No problem.
00:09:24And a clean round.
00:09:25Perfect score.
00:09:26Wow, perfect score, clean round, and under the minute, considerably.
00:09:30What a ride.
00:09:31That was a really good ride by Zhang.
00:09:33Zhang, having been in the final in Mexico in 2018, in a final, she'll be delighted to
00:09:43be in a final here in China, as we see the risk versus reward strategy from the Chinese
00:09:49athlete.
00:09:50But it's a good effect.
00:09:52Next in is Blanka Bauer.
00:09:57Blanka Bauer on Ruyi.
00:10:00The horse, again, another very tight turn into two.
00:10:04And this could be an issue later on.
00:10:09You can see, takes that, again, with an oblique line, jumping a little bit to the side.
00:10:15So she needs to make sure, again, that she's centering the horse in those related fences.
00:10:20And you can see, as soon as she touches the ground from that fence, she looks over to
00:10:26her next fence.
00:10:27So she's able to take a clean one.
00:10:28And it's a knockdown there on seven.
00:10:34So that would be a seven-point deduction.
00:10:40Again, the clock doesn't seem like it's going to be a problem here.
00:10:43If she can keep it clean, she'll be overjoyed.
00:10:46Well, Blanka Bauer, just 10 drops as the last fence, 14-point deduction.
00:10:52So 2.86 for Blanka Bauer.
00:10:57Still a pretty decent score.
00:10:59I don't think she'll be too worried about that.
00:11:01Again, Blanka Bauer is a strong runner.
00:11:04Another young athlete.
00:11:05Yeah.
00:11:0618.
00:11:07Blanka Bauer has had success in the youth and junior categories.
00:11:12And it's really nice to see her competing for an Olympic qualification spot now.
00:11:16Again, part of a very strong Hungarian team.
00:11:19Michal Gulyas, Blanka Bauer, and Blanka Guzi.
00:11:22Four Hungarians in the final.
00:11:24Blanka Guzi from Lithuania, up next.
00:11:27Yeah.
00:11:27And she will be the mount of Xiaobang, the horse.
00:11:33And the starting gate is broken again.
00:11:36Very, very tight into two.
00:11:38That turning circle is really tight for all of our athletes.
00:11:41Yeah, but they've managed to get over and well.
00:11:43But again, if you go into two wrong, you're probably going to get stuck out on three.
00:11:49And there, ladies and gentlemen, is the final.
00:11:52The ladies and gentlemen is why Mariam Amur is the best in the business at the job she does.
00:11:58Get two wrong, you might struggle with three and four.
00:12:00And there, three and four are down.
00:12:02And six.
00:12:03I think that's six down there.
00:12:04Six.
00:12:06This is getting really expensive for Venka Oskari.
00:12:09She moves to the bottom of the order now.
00:12:12It's 21 points.
00:12:13Again, she's going to be under the minute, you would think.
00:12:16She would just want to...
00:12:17Oh, the first of nine almost rocks.
00:12:20And the second of nine and ten goes down.
00:12:22That is a nightmare.
00:12:24That is a 35-point deduction for Venka Oskari.
00:12:28That is, I think, devastating for her.
00:12:31She had some valuable points gone from her competition and
00:12:36essentially puts a dent in her hopes for podium finishes.
00:12:40But again, it's about those lines.
00:12:41So even if you take a wrong line into one of them and you get away with it,
00:12:46it's probably not going to go your way for the rest of the fences.
00:12:50It is a chain reaction.
00:12:51That's demonstrated in two, in fence two.
00:12:53Two and three, yeah.
00:12:56So yeah, hopefully the rest of the athletes are watching on
00:13:00and can learn from some of the athletes' mistakes.
00:13:04Züxel is next in.
00:13:06Again, an athlete who is furnished with medals.
00:13:10Final bronze in Turkey last month, as we all saw.
00:13:13Two wonderful acclaim.
00:13:15Huge smile on her face and the locals as well.
00:13:17Seventh in the World Championship finals in Bath in 2023.
00:13:21Silver in the World Cup final in Turkey in 2023.
00:13:24Bronze in the World Championships in Egypt in 2022.
00:13:27So when the big occasion comes, she steps up.
00:13:30She rises to the occasion, yeah.
00:13:32And today is a big occasion, make no mistake.
00:13:34And to answer the obvious question, yes, they're hot in those blazers.
00:13:38But then so are the horses.
00:13:39But again, they're cared for brilliantly here.
00:13:43They're going to wear those jackets for 50 seconds
00:13:45and they're going to be out of the course.
00:13:46They're not going to worry too much about that.
00:13:47I don't think they're in a case.
00:13:49Yeah, I think all they're focused on now is the ride
00:13:53and trying to get over it cleanly.
00:13:55Züxel just familiarizing herself nicely.
00:13:57Look at that shot.
00:13:59Look at that aerial shot.
00:14:00She's tight into the opening gate.
00:14:02Yeah, it's not the best of lines, but gets through that, I think.
00:14:07A little wider into two, into fence two there, Mariam.
00:14:10Yeah, I think that's the best strategy, to be honest,
00:14:13as she heads into three.
00:14:14Another big line, but manages to get over three well.
00:14:18And she pulled into four really light, but brilliantly.
00:14:23She seems in control of this horse.
00:14:25They don't want to put the car brush on it,
00:14:27but she looks in control here, Züxel.
00:14:30Yeah, another.
00:14:32So one knockdown for Züxel so far.
00:14:35What I was talking about, about turning the head after each fence,
00:14:38is that if you think about walking to the left,
00:14:41you don't say consciously,
00:14:43I'm going to move my leg to the left.
00:14:45So it's pretty unconscious when subconsciously she does it.
00:14:51Through she goes.
00:14:52Just those seven points, not too bad.
00:14:54Two, nine, three.
00:14:59So the horses are making it around in time rather well.
00:15:02Yeah, I think the time limit isn't an issue if you don't have any refusals.
00:15:07Yeah, most of the athletes have gone through without any time penalties.
00:15:16So Rita Erdos will be next.
00:15:19And the horse here has a number.
00:15:22K174.
00:15:24Special Forces maybe?
00:15:25Yep.
00:15:25So Maryam, you're allowed to name the horse.
00:15:28As we are over.
00:15:30Let's call him Charlie.
00:15:31Charlie's a good one.
00:15:33There we go.
00:15:34Charlie goes over two now.
00:15:36Into that tricky three.
00:15:40Good job from Erdos.
00:15:42She makes her way to four.
00:15:45And four catches so many people out.
00:15:47The thing is, it's not just one tight turn or two tight turns.
00:15:50The entire course is a big winding maze.
00:15:55And these athletes are doing really, really well to navigate that.
00:15:59And Erdos is looking good so far with just that one knockdown.
00:16:03She is.
00:16:03But she'll take one knockdown if she can keep it and limit it to one knockdown.
00:16:07And 9A and 9B are the next ones.
00:16:10B is still rocking on its mounting and 10 goes down.
00:16:13Again, the chain reaction that you talked about, Maryam.
00:16:189B was rocking on its mounting.
00:16:20You saw it and 10 goes down.
00:16:21So that's a 14-point deduction.
00:16:2314-point deduction.
00:16:24It's kind of like you can almost predict what's going to happen next when you
00:16:29see the athlete head for the fence.
00:16:32Head for the fence and attacking that fence.
00:16:34And yeah, the way they go into it and their body posture and their
00:16:40rebalancing of the horse.
00:16:41And yeah, it kind of shows what's going to happen next.
00:16:48What a lovely crowd here.
00:16:51Arriving in Zhengzhou.
00:16:53Here she is, Mariana the Smile Arceo.
00:16:57The Smile Arceo.
00:16:58There she is.
00:17:00She plays the game and competes with a smile.
00:17:03Yeah, this season hasn't been the best.
00:17:05She's had a refusal.
00:17:08It's really hard to go back around on this fence because it's really, really tight
00:17:11close to the perimeter.
00:17:13I think it's going to be a second refusal, but no, she does get it over.
00:17:17Well there.
00:17:18Really, really well.
00:17:20So the 10-point deduction for the refusal and then down goes four.
00:17:25Five stays.
00:17:26Needs to keep her reins close to her chest now.
00:17:31She makes it through those tight turns.
00:17:34She can keep it to 17.
00:17:36I think from 17 deduction from here on in, she'll be delighted because the horse is
00:17:40enthusiastic, shall we say.
00:17:43Again, very tight into nine A and B.
00:17:45I think might get caught out on one of those.
00:17:48Oh, A still rocking.
00:17:50B stays.
00:17:51If she can make 10, she's pleased.
00:17:53You heard her yelp.
00:17:55She is very pleased.
00:17:56There's a one-second time penalty.
00:17:58That's with a refusal.
00:17:59Yeah, that's pretty good.
00:18:01I think the course time is forgiving and I think...
00:18:0718-point deduction.
00:18:0918-point deduction for 282.
00:18:12Good maths.
00:18:15So I think if the course is hard in terms of the lines and the turns, the time limit
00:18:22will be a lot more forgiving.
00:18:24It's give and take.
00:18:24So it's either going to be a fast course or a hard course.
00:18:28Well done to horse 27 for Mariana Vallejo.
00:18:31Goosey now in the field.
00:18:34And I think one of those we have our eyes on for a medal here.
00:18:40She's in really good form coming into this competition.
00:18:43She got a medal in Sofia.
00:18:48She's looking relaxed, that has to be said.
00:18:51As is the horse.
00:18:52I think they bonded well in their 20 minutes.
00:18:55Good chemistry between Afi and horse.
00:18:59Oh, that was close, but job well done from Goosey.
00:19:05Blanca Goosey just sitting back a little bit trying to get control of her horse.
00:19:10This is a tight one, but in she goes to 9a.
00:19:14It's clear.
00:19:159b is clear.
00:19:16The time is clear.
00:19:17The 10th is clear.
00:19:19300 for Goosey.
00:19:20It's a perfect round for Blanca Goosey.
00:19:22Yeah, I think she'll be really, really happy with that.
00:19:25And that sets a mark because, as you say,
00:19:27one of your favorites there or thereabouts already in the rankings
00:19:30and a clear round pushes her up, Mariana Vallejo.
00:19:33Yeah, I think she'll be really, really happy with that.
00:19:35To be honest, the field again is pretty tight at this stage.
00:19:39Still have a lot more riders to go.
00:19:44But yeah, we're halfway done with those athletes.
00:19:50Halfway there.
00:19:52I'm so sorry.
00:19:54Anna Yurt, remember her coming in the semifinals from 17th?
00:19:58Do I ever remember.
00:20:01Wonderful display from the Swiss athlete.
00:20:06Gold in the Laser Run World Championships in 21.
00:20:08A refusal there.
00:20:10Good to see somebody coming through the Laser Run ranks as well.
00:20:13Yeah, I think that line into two was
00:20:16the start of that issue.
00:20:19And two refusals is a problem.
00:20:21And that's when you start to get nervous.
00:20:23She needs to focus on the rest of her course now.
00:20:25Not to think too much about those refusals.
00:20:28She's had two refusals.
00:20:30If she can stay in the competition here, Yurt will be pleased.
00:20:33I'm sure she needs to not get any more refusals.
00:20:36There was almost one there, but the horse just stayed with it.
00:20:39If this horse gets round for the rest of this course with the rider.
00:20:43Needs to give a bit of a nudge.
00:20:44She's trying to be vocal about it and trying to move the horse.
00:20:48And I think is doing well to do so.
00:20:50She gets this horse round, Mariam.
00:20:52I think it's a wonderful effort.
00:20:53Yeah, it's going to be over the time limit for sure.
00:20:55But A and B are clear.
00:20:57And 9 is 10 clear.
00:20:58It isn't.
00:20:59But the horse got round.
00:21:0137, is that a 30?
00:21:0333.
00:21:04Yeah, substantially down the rankings now.
00:21:08She's.
00:21:11Look at that fence, though.
00:21:13That was looking really, really shaky.
00:21:17267 then for Anna Yurt.
00:21:20Yeah, that's a tough score to get by.
00:21:23But if anyone can as Anna Yurt.
00:21:26She's a strong runner.
00:21:28Excuse me.
00:21:29Yep.
00:21:30Sunwoo Kim, one of the four Korean athletes in the final here, is next up.
00:21:38She's already picked up medals in China.
00:21:39A silver in the Asia Games in 2023.
00:21:43So the South Korean.
00:21:48Yeah, really pushing down on her heels, making sure she is
00:21:53using her body weight and not relying too much on the saddle and the horse
00:21:58and trying to give him room and space to make that jump effortlessly.
00:22:02Jia Huang is her horse.
00:22:04And so far, Mariam, it's a clear round.
00:22:06So far it is.
00:22:08And she's done so masterfully.
00:22:11And almost to the final stages of the course.
00:22:14Now this is looking like a clean ride from Sunwoo Kim.
00:22:169A and B to go as well as 10.
00:22:18The clock is fine.
00:22:19And 9A goes down.
00:22:21That's 7.
00:22:219B stays.
00:22:22Can she get clear on 10?
00:22:24She can just.
00:22:25And breaks the tape with 12 seconds to spare.
00:22:28293, Mariam.
00:22:30Good run.
00:22:30Yeah, good run.
00:22:31293 is a near perfect score.
00:22:35Just the one fence down for Sunwoo Kim.
00:22:45And you'll see of our riders usually when they finish.
00:22:48Mariam and my favorite shot, I think,
00:22:50which is where you can see through the backs of the see through the backs of the stadium.
00:22:58Judges for the riding and their tens.
00:23:01This is the bell you just heard there.
00:23:06Bell means the aphid can get underway.
00:23:10As Anastasia Prokopenko of the individual neutral aphids makes her way in.
00:23:16Prokopenko again goes tight into two.
00:23:18I think three is going to be an issue.
00:23:20But no, she does get over three nicely.
00:23:25Xiaobu is the gray horse that she is the mount of.
00:23:28And it's a clear run so far for Prokopenko.
00:23:32She's looking very in control.
00:23:34You can see she took it wide going into those fences.
00:23:38Now she's giving the horse a lot to work with.
00:23:41As much as she's getting every inch out of the course, isn't she?
00:23:43Yeah, she's really trying to utilize those corners well.
00:23:47And let's see how she does on 9 now.
00:23:50That's the interesting part.
00:23:52It's caught a few out 9a and 9b.
00:23:53You know what?
00:23:54I think that's the best line we've seen on 9.
00:23:56But yeah, just knocked down on b.
00:23:582-9-3 for Prokopenko.
00:24:02Funny, isn't it?
00:24:02If she'd knocked one down, she'd have been pleased with the 2-9-3.
00:24:05You knock 10 down or 9b down, you're not pleased with the 2-9-3.
00:24:08Psychology of sport, eh?
00:24:11Yeah, finishing strong.
00:24:12It's what you want.
00:24:13But there you go.
00:24:16Look at that shot with a city in the background.
00:24:18Love it.
00:24:18Not when there's a fence going down.
00:24:19We don't.
00:24:20But there you go.
00:24:21Such is the nature.
00:24:23Well done to Prokopenko.
00:24:252-9-3.
00:24:28It's Mara Vega next up.
00:24:31Didn't make the World Cup final in Turkey a few weeks ago.
00:24:3510th in the Rio Olympics in 2016.
00:24:39Yeah.
00:24:40Over 1.
00:24:41Look at that.
00:24:42Really wide.
00:24:43That is a different strategy than we've seen.
00:24:45And maybe she's discussed that with her coach beforehand.
00:24:48Because she knows time's not a problem, maybe?
00:24:50Yeah, I think time is not the issue here again, as you said.
00:24:53And kind of clips on 3, but no knockdowns.
00:24:56Horse is champing a little, isn't it?
00:25:004 is clear.
00:25:02She's getting vocal as well.
00:25:07Trying to reel the horse in.
00:25:08It seems like he attacks the fences pretty aggressively.
00:25:11But yeah, she's doing a really good job of calming him down.
00:25:15It's just that one knockdown so far.
00:25:18Over 8.
00:25:20No, the turn into 9 is what counts.
00:25:23Final three fences.
00:25:25Over 9-8.
00:25:26Over B.
00:25:27Clips B, but it doesn't fall down.
00:25:29Clips 10, it doesn't fall down.
00:25:31How incredible was that?
00:25:33Tamara Venger, you can do my lottery this.
00:25:422-8-3, we're being told.
00:25:45Where was the 17?
00:25:46There was a fence, but where was there?
00:25:47Oh, did she get a 10-point penalty because she went around the fence to take on 2?
00:25:54I'm not really sure where that came from, to be honest.
00:25:58Try and seek clarification as to why there was a 10-point penalty there for Tamara Venger.
00:26:04She had one fence down, we understand that.
00:26:07But there was a 10 taken off for Venger for some reason.
00:26:10We'll establish whether it was, what it was for.
00:26:15Michel Gouliash next in.
00:26:18Michel Gouliash representing Hungary.
00:26:20Again, one of the four Hungarians competing in the final.
00:26:25She has a refusal on 2.
00:26:28She was kind of relaxing the reins a bit.
00:26:33I think she needs to reel it in now.
00:26:34It's another refusal.
00:26:39Okay, so we've got that three refusals.
00:26:42That is elimination.
00:26:44Oh my god, that is the end of Michel Gouliash's run at the World Champs.
00:26:48Wow.
00:26:49Again, a very eventful competition.
00:26:52We've had very unexpected twists and turns.
00:26:57And we've established why Tamara Venger got a 10-point deduction, Mariam.
00:27:01Yeah, it was due to a technicality.
00:27:03The UIPM logo was on the wrong side of the jacket.
00:27:08Yeah, just those tiny details could be detrimental to you.
00:27:12So having 10 points on the technicality is something that you want to avoid.
00:27:17We're getting into the top five now.
00:27:19This is where things really, really matter.
00:27:21That's big for Gouliash, Mariam.
00:27:24First elimination.
00:27:28Gouliash is one of those, again, that we see and think of as one of the athletes
00:27:35who will be standing on the Olympic podium.
00:27:37Hasn't been that consistent this year, but she's an incredible athlete.
00:27:40And I'm sure she's going to turn things around as Samadou Motsoud makes her way in.
00:27:44It takes the same line as well.
00:27:46I think that's a smart move from Salma.
00:27:48She has a very short distance to maneuver into three obliquely.
00:27:54And yeah, it's a knockdown.
00:27:58Goes too deep into three.
00:27:59And see that turn onto four and five.
00:28:04Again, not the best of lines, but was able to get through that.
00:28:08Ah, that is a tight turn.
00:28:10But wow, Salma Motsoud.
00:28:13How did she manage to do that?
00:28:14That's incredible riding from her.
00:28:17Over seven is the crucial part of the course now.
00:28:20Clips eight, doesn't fall down.
00:28:23How she managed that on six, I do not know.
00:28:25She's got 9A and 9B ahead of her.
00:28:27They've proved problematic.
00:28:28A wobbles, B stays.
00:28:3010.
00:28:31Clear.
00:28:32So 10 is clear.
00:28:33So just the seven point deduction for three.
00:28:37Yeah, the Egyptian is...
00:28:38293.
00:28:40Yeah, 293.
00:28:42It's a really good score for Salma Motsoud.
00:28:44Again, keeping her in contention for medal positions and podium positions.
00:28:49She's featured in World Championships before, but not podiumed.
00:28:52The 24-year-old, 17th in Bath at the World Champs last year.
00:28:56Sixth in Egypt in the finals.
00:29:01Yeah, in World Champs, you mean.
00:29:03But yeah, World Cups, I think she had some success in terms of medals.
00:29:06And she was the Youth Olympic champion in 2018 in Buenos Aires.
00:29:10So she had a fantastic youth and junior career.
00:29:14And honestly, she's crushing it in the seniors as well.
00:29:18She is consistent.
00:29:19And one that finishes in the top six very often.
00:29:25Cape French next in for Great Britain on Diane Nga, the horse.
00:29:30The Olympic gold medalist.
00:29:33They're top four athletes now.
00:29:35Things get serious.
00:29:40Another beautiful horse.
00:29:48So with all being well, and the fences complete,
00:29:51and the UIPM logo being on the right side,
00:29:55Cape French takes to our course.
00:29:58A very poised and elegant style Cape French has on the ride.
00:30:04Giving the bell means she's allowed to start the course now.
00:30:10She's taking her time around the course and getting the pace into that horse.
00:30:16It's nice to get that pace in before fence number one.
00:30:20She does so nicely.
00:30:21It's a bit off of the center line, but not too bad.
00:30:28Into two.
00:30:29I think the horse tends to go a little bit to the left.
00:30:31I don't think she is the issue here.
00:30:33But he's doing it nicely.
00:30:35He's used to jumping in that style.
00:30:40Cape French looks good so far.
00:30:42Over four.
00:30:44Related fence into five.
00:30:45She'll be pleased here.
00:30:46The athlete from Great Britain.
00:30:49She's got six to negotiate.
00:30:52Six B down.
00:30:53So that's minus seven.
00:30:56Yeah, really want to make sure in between the doubles.
00:31:01Over eight she goes.
00:31:02We have a slight technical issue with the clock,
00:31:05but don't worry, we'll let you know if there are any penalty points.
00:31:08By the naked eye, to me, it looks like she's going to be under 60 as 9B goes down and 10 goes down.
00:31:14That blows the competition wide open, in my opinion.
00:31:17She moves down into fifth.
00:31:19She started in fourth.
00:31:20Some of the most with that 293 moves into the top four.
00:31:25279 for Cape French.
00:31:28I don't think there was a time penalty there.
00:31:29We're just waiting for clarification, but everyone's been around in about 50 seconds.
00:31:33Yes, 279 is the time.
00:31:35So there were no time penalties there.
00:31:37For the athlete from Great Britain.
00:31:38And we're into the top three here, Mariam.
00:31:41Yeah, things get interesting from here on out.
00:31:44Top three.
00:31:45We've had some unlucky athletes who started in first in a couple competitions and got eliminated.
00:31:56But Xiang Mengxiang is currently in third place.
00:32:00Getting to the course now.
00:32:01A very accomplished athlete this season with two silver medals at the World Cup level and
00:32:08one bronze.
00:32:10Actually, she missed out on bronze at the World Cup final after Ilka took that finish.
00:32:15She finished in fourth.
00:32:19She's got a clean round so far as the athlete from Korea.
00:32:23She turns neatly into six.
00:32:25That was a shaky line, but job well done from Xiang Mengxiang.
00:32:31Three more to go now.
00:32:33Could be a clear round.
00:32:34If you put a clear round in the top three here, you are doing very well.
00:32:37You are.
00:32:389B goes down.
00:32:4110 stays.
00:32:42So it's a 293 for Xiang Mengxiang.
00:32:45A very solid score from Xiang.
00:32:48If you're in the top three, first of all, you want to maintain that position.
00:32:53But again, you have all that pressure to perform.
00:32:56Because if you don't, you're essentially out of medal positions.
00:33:00Again, we still have a lot more disciplines to go.
00:33:03But yeah, you want to get into those other disciplines, into the bonus round with as
00:33:07much confidence.
00:33:09And put a clear round in the top three.
00:33:12So Xiang Mengxiang with a good riding event there.
00:33:27Two more athletes to go now.
00:33:32This is being led away and they'll receive some nourishment, some water, the shade.
00:33:39A bit of ice around the neck as well.
00:33:43Yeah, this riding event has gone by really, really quickly.
00:33:49As Eunju Kim takes to the course now from Korea.
00:33:54One of four Koreans in the finals.
00:33:57Must be said, a very strong Korean women's team making an appearance here in Zhengzhou.
00:34:03It's a difficult Olympic choice.
00:34:05Difficult, yeah.
00:34:07And Hungary.
00:34:09Egypt.
00:34:10There's some difficult selections.
00:34:14She needs to pick up the pace now.
00:34:15This might not be the best strategy.
00:34:18And she also fails to rebalance after that fence.
00:34:21You can see that little nudge forward she does.
00:34:25Usain needs to pick up the pace.
00:34:26Is that versus the clock or because the horse's momentum is too slow?
00:34:29It's momentum is too slow.
00:34:30It might refuse, might knock down.
00:34:33And she needs to be really careful now.
00:34:36She's in the top two.
00:34:37But with that seven seconds already off her score,
00:34:40it's another knockdown.
00:34:41She really needs to pick up the pace now.
00:34:44Look at that.
00:34:44She's going down to a trot.
00:34:45This is not the sign you want at this stage in the competition.
00:34:50Over seven.
00:34:50She's already got 14 point deduction though.
00:34:52And she's got eight down as well.
00:34:54Really needs to use her spurs at this point.
00:34:57Needs to put in the pace because the pace is going to be detrimental to those final three.
00:35:029b rock.
00:35:039a went down.
00:35:0410 rocked.
00:35:06That's 28.
00:35:07Could have been a lot worse.
00:35:09She's down to sixth.
00:35:10Yeah, this is again a critical part of the competition.
00:35:15Eunju Kim was very, it was very clear to be honest,
00:35:19that the horse didn't have any pace in him.
00:35:21And after the fence, if you go into a trot,
00:35:24I think that is not a good sign at all.
00:35:27And how would you rectify that as a rider?
00:35:30You do have to use,
00:35:32I don't think she really made sure that the horse knew who was in control.
00:35:38Forceful.
00:35:38She needs to be, yeah, she needs to be a bit more forceful.
00:35:41And you could see with the other athletes,
00:35:43some of the tactics they used was being vocal, using their heels.
00:35:48Telling the horse it's work time.
00:35:49Yeah.
00:35:51Wake up, we've got work to do.
00:35:53Yes, correct.
00:35:53Here's our leader then from Sweden.
00:35:56Jawid.
00:35:57One's clear, two's clear, but too slow.
00:36:00But she's done really well to recover from that line.
00:36:02It was almost going to be a refusal.
00:36:04Manages over three well into four and five now,
00:36:07that tricky related line.
00:36:11Five, the oxer is clear.
00:36:13Yeah, it's a bit of winging to the right,
00:36:15but maybe she has that in the back of her mind,
00:36:18going into six A and B.
00:36:19This is looking good from Jawid, the leader.
00:36:22She knows she's in first position.
00:36:24Everyone's chasing.
00:36:25Yeah, she's...
00:36:25Clear round so far here.
00:36:27Ooh, she was clear.
00:36:29It is clear, but she...
00:36:31Just, yeah.
00:36:32Nine A and B have been a challenge.
00:36:34A is clear, B is clear.
00:36:36And will it be a clear round for our leader?
00:36:38No.
00:36:39Just at the end, but broke the curse of elimination,
00:36:42starting out in first.
00:36:43Marlena Jawid is in a definite lead.
00:36:46She has 10 seconds over Song in second.
00:36:50And I think that's a really good position for Marlena Jawid
00:36:52to start out.
00:36:54We saw her in the semi-final shot brilliantly,
00:36:56ran really well.
00:36:58And, yeah, if she can put in the pace,
00:37:01she's, I think, definitely going to be on the podium.
00:37:05Let's not get out of ourselves, though.
00:37:06No, quite well.
00:37:07She's up there, isn't she?
00:37:08So she knows everybody's chasing her.
00:37:10Marion, when you and I walked the course,
00:37:12you said it was challenging.
00:37:14When we came up here, you said it was challenging.
00:37:16Let's give our athletes and our horses a lot of credit, shall we?
00:37:18Because they've negotiated a challenging course really well.
00:37:21Really, really well.
00:37:21I think we had only two eliminations in this.
00:37:26Just that one elimination?
00:37:27Yes, just one elimination.
00:37:29And to be honest, the scores are pretty decent
00:37:32given the difficulty and the level of this course.
00:37:35And here you can see the results after riding.
00:37:38Yep, so that is our leaderboard after the riding events.
00:37:42We will head to the fencing bonus round following that.
00:37:45But Jawid is out there leading.
00:37:48And we know it's going to come down to the laser run.
00:37:50But there's a bit of a gap from her on in.
00:37:53Yeah, Zhang, Ilko.
00:37:54Who from the second page can make their way up?
00:37:56Ilko?
00:37:57Oh, you're asking me that with fencing, swimming and laser run left?
00:38:01Bauer, Anna Yurt, maybe Wankowska-Ariv.
00:38:03Yurt, I think it's going to be difficult.
00:38:04But we saw Anna Yurt go from, I think it was 16th into...
00:38:0717th into top nine.
00:38:09Yeah, like top nine to get through.
00:38:10So huge credit to her.
00:38:11Don't write anybody off at this stage.
00:38:13It's the World Championship Finals.
00:38:14It's the best of the best.
00:38:15And here is how they were riding in event and discipline number one.
00:38:23Three, two, one.
00:38:53So our riding complete.
00:39:14And our athletes move then from our riding arena.
00:39:20They leave the equestrian stand for their fencing shoes.
00:39:24One-on-one bouts, two points per winning bout.
00:39:27And we start in reverse order according to the ranking round.
00:39:31Yeah, so riding points don't get taken into account when
00:39:37we put up the starting order for these athletes on bonus round.
00:39:40No, it's all according to the ranking round.
00:39:43And these athletes then certainly want to put a run together here
00:39:46as our athletes are a bit of a chest stretch there for Wankowska-Ariv.
00:39:52Stretching their pectorals.
00:39:55Just in the prep area then checking their weapons,
00:39:58making sure everything's in order.
00:39:59Wonderful insight this is to the inner workings of modern pentathlon
00:40:03here at a World Championships.
00:40:04You can see, you know, even the various stretches,
00:40:06a bit of hamstring stretch in there because there's a lot of dashing
00:40:09forwards and backwards on the hamstrings for the athletes and the fencing.
00:40:13And we talk about the transitions and how important they are
00:40:16between each discipline.
00:40:17It's nice to see the behind the scenes of that
00:40:22and what the fencers and the athletes actually do.
00:40:25They obviously, these athletes have competed first in the right,
00:40:29so they have the most time to relax and maybe get some nutrition
00:40:34and definitely hydrating, definitely in this weather.
00:40:38Yeah, I think I saw one of the athletes getting a full curtain of electrolyte drinks.
00:40:44Yeah, taking that hydration very seriously.
00:40:49Is there a bit of consolation going on there or just a bit of a friendly pat on the back?
00:40:53Maybe friendly.
00:40:55But yeah, we've seen a lot of injuries this competition
00:40:59and that could be due to inadequate nutrition or inadequate hydration
00:41:05because again the weather is pretty tough here.
00:41:08Give us the science.
00:41:09The science behind the kind of muscles you talked about, magnesium and cramping.
00:41:13Cramping becomes a problem.
00:41:14You know, a great one too.
00:41:16We saw Pat, didn't we?
00:41:18The Frenchman with a calf problem.
00:41:20Yeah, so when you lose a lot in sweat, you lose sodium, you lose electrolytes, you lose salts.
00:41:27And if you don't replenish that, then what your muscles need and what your...
00:41:33Sorry, pardon me.
00:41:37The electrolytes in your blood have to be balanced
00:41:39so we don't go into acidosis or alkalosis
00:41:42and then your muscles start to break down.
00:41:44It is a very fine balance and I think it's very tightly controlled by their team and their coaches.
00:41:53The replacement is usually, forgive me,
00:41:54the replacement is usually like a tablet you break into water.
00:41:57It can be a powder that instantly goes into the water.
00:42:00That's why you'll often see the athletes water maybe yellow or orange
00:42:03because they try and flavor them so that it basically doesn't taste like salt.
00:42:07Yeah, that's basically it.
00:42:08And sometimes you have those ready-packaged electrolyte drinks as well,
00:42:13Gatorade, Powerade, stuff like that.
00:42:14I make them with sugar.
00:42:17Yeah, exactly.
00:42:18You need to get your carbs in.
00:42:19This is...
00:42:21So they have very difficult dietary restrictions when it comes to competition.
00:42:27You need to get those carbs in.
00:42:28It's all about protein and carbs.
00:42:31But actually, I think it's a common misconception that people think that protein
00:42:35after a workout or after a competition is the most important thing.
00:42:38It is important, but carbs are way much more important.
00:42:42Your sponge has been wrung out of water.
00:42:44You need water in it really quickly.
00:42:53Yeah, so athletes, as you can see up on your screen,
00:42:57just checking that their weapons are intact,
00:43:00checking that everything is according to the rules and regulations of the sport.
00:43:11Our crowd, by the way.
00:43:11We saw some of our crowd, a few crowd shots then.
00:43:14The cute factors back.
00:43:16The youngsters are here.
00:43:18Some of them in the sun, some of them in the shade.
00:43:20Look, there you go.
00:43:20Look at that youngster on the left-hand side.
00:43:23Two youngsters, young boys, one with a big hat.
00:43:26Mum's put a big hat on me.
00:43:28Keep you out of the sun.
00:43:29It's cultural over here as well, isn't it?
00:43:31Make sure that everyone's kept out of the sun.
00:43:34If you see yourself on the big screen, we definitely need a wave.
00:43:38Eros, just waiting in line.
00:43:41And again, a reminder, Marion, that weight that's being put onto the swords
00:43:45is to check the reactions and the pressure and stuff like that.
00:43:48Yeah, checking that the pressure is abiding by the rules and regulations of the sport
00:43:54and making sure there aren't any faulty equipment.
00:43:58So, good little crowd here.
00:44:04And you could see that the obstacle course is back as well on the left-hand side,
00:44:08just behind the swimming pool and the swimming arena.
00:44:11I think the obstacle course back up there, is it?
00:44:13Oh, no, maybe it's not.
00:44:14I think it was there for the laser and for the younger athletes to try out.
00:44:17Is that not it there?
00:44:18Yes, it is.
00:44:18Yes, it is.
00:44:19I can see it.
00:44:20Somebody with better eyes and a longer lens, I'm sure, will tell me.
00:44:23But I think I can see that.
00:44:25Oh, there's just some kids running around and jumping around in that part of the stand.
00:44:28But I think there might be a little obstacle course up there for youngsters to practice on.
00:44:33Because, of course, Marion, this is the penultimate time we'll see horses in the modern pentathlon.
00:44:37The final time will be in the Olympic Games in Paris.
00:44:40Yeah, it's tough to say goodbye.
00:44:43But the sport must go on, must develop, must continue to evolve.
00:44:47And the athletes know that and have been preparing for that.
00:44:52Seniors are a bit behind, but the youngsters are, I think, very well versed in that area.
00:44:57We have incredible times, which we will see in the junior world champs later on this month.
00:45:05I think it starts on the 28th of June, the first broadcast for junior world champs.
00:45:09But yeah, we'll see a lot of obstacle action from the youngsters.
00:45:13And I'm telling you now, they're going to be quick on the course.
00:45:16Looking forward to that.
00:45:17Whilst we sadly, in some respects, wave goodbye to the horses,
00:45:21we have a smile and welcome the obstacle course and the evolution of this sport.
00:45:26As we'll take to the fencing piste.
00:45:32As James Zanedakis, who you'd normally be familiar with being in this seat and on commentary.
00:45:37He's here, don't worry.
00:45:38He's on MC duty.
00:45:43And the crowd react.
00:45:48Yeah, the Chinese first on the piste.
00:45:51A home favourite in front of her home crowd now.
00:45:54Getting that bit of extra support.
00:45:56So Zhang, Minjun Zhang and Haiyan Zhang kick things off.
00:46:02Korea versus China.
00:46:08So fencing bonus round.
00:46:10It's a one-touch epee event.
00:46:13Just make sure your shoes are tied properly,
00:46:15because you don't want to trip over your own shoes on the piste.
00:46:19And some of the athletes, by the way, these two athletes don't have sunglasses on.
00:46:22But some of the athletes will be fencing with sunglasses on due to the sun.
00:46:27Sometimes that can be an issue.
00:46:28Gets in your eye.
00:46:29You can't really see the blade because obviously there's also reflection.
00:46:32It's metal.
00:46:33And yeah.
00:46:35By the time you see it, it's probably too late.
00:46:39And we have our first bout then.
00:46:42With a Korean and Chinese athlete facing off.
00:46:46And instantly within the first 10 seconds, Zhang of Korea with a victory.
00:46:51Yeah, Zhang kicks things off nicely and a good ride.
00:46:55Puts her in 15th place now.
00:46:59And assess that victory for us in that touch.
00:47:03Yeah, it's a good round.
00:47:04Assess that victory for us in that touch.
00:47:07Yeah, destructive distance.
00:47:09Went in and then probably made an illusion that she took a step back,
00:47:15but went for the flush.
00:47:16It was an upper arm touch.
00:47:19Blanka Bauer next in.
00:47:25The Hungarian.
00:47:29Frighteningly young.
00:47:30She's the same age as my daughter.
00:47:32How to make a man feel old.
00:47:33She's 18 or 19?
00:47:3418.
00:47:36Hasn't turned 19 yet.
00:47:38No, but it was a significant birthday in the men's event for the final.
00:47:41I was up very late last night, Mariam.
00:47:42I don't mind telling you.
00:47:44Here we go.
00:47:45And Zhang turn it into two.
00:47:48From two for the Korean.
00:47:49Blanka Bauer is in her way.
00:47:51High arm from Bauer.
00:47:54And Zhang with the win and the yelp.
00:47:57Yeah.
00:48:00Bauer again, when you straighten your arm as an athlete,
00:48:03you're very prone to...
00:48:05Obviously, when you straighten your arm, you have less control on the blade.
00:48:08So the athlete can kind of use that against you
00:48:13in terms of strength against your blade.
00:48:15And yeah, it goes for an attack pretty easy.
00:48:19So Bauer might want to rethink that strategy with that straight arm.
00:48:23Vintare.
00:48:24Frank Cascati of Lithuania next in.
00:48:27And she struggled in the riding.
00:48:282.65.
00:48:29Yeah, that's going to be tough to recover from.
00:48:32But if anyone can do it, it is Vintare Cascati.
00:48:36Here we go then.
00:48:37Vintare Cascati and Zhang.
00:48:39Zhang on a roll with two wins.
00:48:41Zhang needs to be smart about this now.
00:48:43Vintare Cascati opening up the distance nicely.
00:48:45But Zhang goes for a flush.
00:48:47And Vintare Cascati was ready for that.
00:48:49I want to see the replays of that.
00:48:51That was pretty...
00:48:54I thought it was going to be for Zhang for a moment.
00:48:56Quick hands.
00:48:57Yeah, let's take a look at how...
00:48:58Oh, it was a counter six.
00:49:00Counter six.
00:49:01Opened up the distance.
00:49:02Saw that coming from afar.
00:49:04Look at that.
00:49:05Nice.
00:49:05I think it was in the mask of the Korean athlete.
00:49:09Can I ask a dumb question?
00:49:12No dumb questions.
00:49:12What's it like when a sword comes towards your face?
00:49:15You're wearing a mask, I'll grant you.
00:49:17But...
00:49:18Do you mean like the reaction?
00:49:19Yeah, like the reflex.
00:49:20No.
00:49:21I know you're an athlete.
00:49:22You train for years.
00:49:22But it's coming at your face, man.
00:49:26Actually, it's nice that you pointed that out.
00:49:29But I've never actually had that.
00:49:31I feel like you get used to it.
00:49:32There's a mask in front of you.
00:49:33There's no way that it's going to hit your face.
00:49:36I know, but...
00:49:38That's why you're an athlete and I just sit here.
00:49:41As Yuxel Verdaghi next in.
00:49:43Vedka Cascati with one win.
00:49:45Delighted to have former athlete Maryam Aman next to me.
00:49:49And as Yuxel with the yelp and the scream and the win.
00:49:52She gets the touch and she gets one point.
00:49:56And wearing sunglasses as you discussed.
00:50:00Yeah.
00:50:01Long reach.
00:50:03What is another guess?
00:50:04So she actually did what Vedka Cascati just did in the previous bout to win.
00:50:09It was another counter six waiting for her opponent to come in.
00:50:12Opening up the distance and seeing that touch coming from afar.
00:50:16We don't have favorites.
00:50:16We're not allowed to have favorites for obvious reasons.
00:50:18But I love Yuxel's smile.
00:50:20She seems to play the sport with such good spirit.
00:50:23She has a definite passion for the sport.
00:50:26And I think she is one of the more...
00:50:30Well, they're all talented.
00:50:31But Yuxel has that special, unique thing about her when it comes to laser.
00:50:36We've seen that in World Cup final in Ankara.
00:50:38That incredible split push.
00:50:40Look at that foot touch.
00:50:41Less than a second.
00:50:45Less than a second.
00:50:46As Yuxel with a touch instantly.
00:50:49Less than a second.
00:50:53How...
00:50:56That is...
00:50:56First of all, that's incredibly risky.
00:50:58Second of all, incredibly gutsy from her to pull off that move.
00:51:02Not only is it a bonus round, so she could be off the piece.
00:51:06But first second.
00:51:09The clock didn't even start.
00:51:10But it had started.
00:51:11There was no technical problem.
00:51:12Yeah.
00:51:13And here she is.
00:51:14Always wearing a smile.
00:51:17Mariana Arceo of Mexico.
00:51:20She's looking good in this competition.
00:51:22It has to be said.
00:51:24Recovering well from less than perfect season so far.
00:51:29Two wins for Yuxel then.
00:51:31Great kind of Mariana to share some of our commentary on her Instagram page
00:51:34as well in the last 48 hours.
00:51:36Yeah, Mariana Arceo is...
00:51:40Has a time priority here.
00:51:42She's taking her time.
00:51:43Keeping her distance.
00:51:44I think Yuxel is looking for an attack.
00:51:45There's another foot touch from Yuxel.
00:51:48This is incredible.
00:51:50Can she keep up this momentum?
00:51:52She's going to move up quite nicely.
00:51:53She's now in ninth place and closing in on eighth.
00:51:58The timing of that.
00:51:59Yeah, the timing, the precision, the rhythm.
00:52:02That touch.
00:52:02You can see the footwork as well.
00:52:05Everything was calculated.
00:52:08It was Yuxel.
00:52:09Was it the back foot she went for as well?
00:52:11No, no.
00:52:12It was the one in front.
00:52:14But it kind of looks like...
00:52:17Rebounded from that one onto the other leg.
00:52:19Blanca Guzzi next in.
00:52:21Yeah.
00:52:24Ilka and Guzzi, I think, have a pretty interesting battle on their hands.
00:52:28Both of them very strong runners.
00:52:31Oh, Yuxel again within the first two seconds wants to get aggressive.
00:52:34Yeah, Guzzi must have watched the previous rounds and opted to really put her distance out and make sure she...
00:52:43Look at that.
00:52:45Ilka's looks is unstoppable.
00:52:47Guzzi got it.
00:52:48Guzzi goes for a flash.
00:52:50Even when she changes her tactic, I think...
00:52:53I don't know.
00:52:54Yuxel looks pumped.
00:52:55She looks ready.
00:52:56Correct.
00:52:56Focused.
00:52:57Laser focused.
00:52:57I was about to say the same thing.
00:52:59She's aggressive.
00:53:01This is a World Championship final.
00:53:02If I'm going to get on the podium, I've got to be hard.
00:53:05I either go hard and fail, but I went out trying, or I go hard and I catch a few.
00:53:10And she's 4-4-4 now.
00:53:12Yeah, that's definitely the run you want on the bonus round.
00:53:15Looking at the replays there, it's actually Guzzi who passed it.
00:53:18I think it was her mistake.
00:53:19And Ilka Yuxel took advantage of that.
00:53:22And yeah, four points for her.
00:53:25Ania, if anybody needs some bonus points, it's her.
00:53:27She struggled in the riding, but she's against a formidable opponent in Yuxel who has 4-4-4.
00:53:34Ania would love to stop that and get some bonus points of her own to make up for that riding
00:53:39struggle for the Swiss.
00:53:41She has a time advantage.
00:53:44I think now drawing her opponent in.
00:53:46The Swiss is falling for it.
00:53:50Actually, the Swiss gets the touch.
00:53:52Ania Juret stops the Yuxel at four wins on the bonus round.
00:53:56But essentially, those are eight extra points for Ilka.
00:53:59And she had a really good ride.
00:54:01300 points for her.
00:54:04So was it a 2-9-3?
00:54:07Yeah, 2-9-3.
00:54:08Sorry for Yuxel.
00:54:09But again, a pretty decent score.
00:54:12And so she'll be happy with those eight extra points.
00:54:16Eight could be...
00:54:17Eight extra points could be the difference between first, second and third.
00:54:20Like they just come across that line pretty quickly and they chase each other to the finish
00:54:25line.
00:54:25So eight seconds is significant.
00:54:28Sunwoo Kim next in then, the Korean.
00:54:36She has a world championship gold.
00:54:38It was in the relay in 22.
00:54:40World Cup final in Ankara relay gold as well in the mixed in 23.
00:54:44So again, the big occasions.
00:54:45These are finals that we're talking about.
00:54:47This world championship final.
00:54:49Kim will want to try and stop Yurt, but it's a double touch.
00:54:5416 left on the clock.
00:54:55Mariam.
00:54:56Sunwoo Kim, I think, taking that hand and looking for the base.
00:55:00We saw yesterday going for that flush a lot.
00:55:03She's going to dot that back to Kuret.
00:55:04It's another double touch.
00:55:05This happened yesterday with Sunwoo Kim, actually.
00:55:09You hear the ooh from the crowd.
00:55:13Reacting to every move these athletes make.
00:55:15It's another...
00:55:17That's like getting...
00:55:19It's like studio noises.
00:55:20It's brilliant, but it's not.
00:55:21They are live.
00:55:22We're not piping this in, folks, as a fourth double touch.
00:55:27I think Sunwoo Kim now needs to open up the distance and move to the back of the piece.
00:55:31Trying to go for a counterattack.
00:55:33Ani Yurt needs to make a move.
00:55:34And it's Sunwoo Kim, anyways, at three seconds with the win.
00:55:38The Korean moving up the order nicely.
00:55:40Now in seventh place alongside her teammate Eunju Kim.
00:55:45Just two seconds away from her.
00:55:50Seventh place then for Sunwoo Kim with one victory in the bonus round.
00:55:56Prokopenko will come in.
00:55:58The individual neutral athlete.
00:56:08So, Prokopenko versus Kim.
00:56:22The way they go.
00:56:26Kim with the one victory.
00:56:30It was a hand touch.
00:56:32Wow.
00:56:33So with that, I don't even think she knew she got that touch.
00:56:38But when your hand placement is correct and you have things close to the protector of
00:56:45the blade, you can see at the end there.
00:56:47Then you can kind of get tiny little touches all around the wrist.
00:56:51And that's exactly what she did.
00:56:53That was a pretty precise work from her.
00:56:57So even if it was unintentional, her hand placement was correct.
00:57:00And that's why she got the touch when Kim Sunwoo was going every which way with the blade.
00:57:06Prokopenko then with the one win.
00:57:09Tamara Vega comes in.
00:57:11A 2.83 in the ride from Vega.
00:57:16So again, she'll want any bonus points you can get.
00:57:19Remember two for a win.
00:57:21Until you get to the athlete that's at the top and that bout counts for four.
00:57:25Because that athlete at the top can only get one win.
00:57:28The victory goes to Prokopenko.
00:57:30Yeah, strong lunge with those legs.
00:57:36Vega didn't look particularly happy with herself there.
00:57:39That takes Prokopenko to fourth position.
00:57:43That's a really good starting position for Prokopenko.
00:57:47Before the Tokyo Olympics, she was actually one of the best runners on course.
00:57:52She took some time after the Olympics and is slowly but surely getting there.
00:57:58Back to her form.
00:57:59And if this was 2019, I would have said that Prokopenko would be gold at this competition.
00:58:07But now we'll just have to wait and see.
00:58:09She's up against some strong, strong competition.
00:58:12In the twilight of her career as well.
00:58:1438.
00:58:1538.
00:58:18Doesn't look a day over 28.
00:58:20Guliash is next in.
00:58:22Yeah, eliminated from the ride.
00:58:24So competition is essentially over.
00:58:26But she will be competing.
00:58:28Because again, we've mentioned this before, Mariam,
00:58:30but she has for the integrity of the sport.
00:58:32And also, that's her against Grappian.
00:58:36Prokopenko with that remise.
00:58:39Michelle Guliash trips on the flesh there.
00:58:42It's a nice counter-remise from Prokopenko.
00:58:46Yeah, as you said, for the integrity of the sport.
00:58:49But also, this is her final time to be in competition zone before or ahead of the Olympics.
00:58:57Michelle Guliash is definitely in the draft for Hungary.
00:59:04Salma Abdul-Mansour is next in.
00:59:06293 in the riding for the Egyptian.
00:59:09The only female Egyptian in this final.
00:59:16Again, another athlete that has done brilliantly in the junior ranks.
00:59:21Come through to the senior ranks.
00:59:22And in this world championship final is
00:59:24Sally there or thereabouts.
00:59:25Started in fifth position at 293.
00:59:28She can knock Prokopenko off of her perch.
00:59:30Prokopenko's on a roll though.
00:59:32I think she's built up some momentum on the bonus round.
00:59:34Salma's a bit slow with the footwork.
00:59:36I think Prokopenko is looking for a foot touch here.
00:59:39It's another lunge.
00:59:40But Salma opens up for this nicely.
00:59:42Salma's one of those that's hard to take the blade.
00:59:44But Prokopenko gets things done.
00:59:47This is four wins for Prokopenko now.
00:59:49She's moving closer to Salma Abdul-Mansour.
00:59:52Moving closer to that bronze medal position now.
00:59:55Still have, of course, the swimming to go ahead of the laser run.
00:59:59But yeah, any points you can get on a bonus round
01:00:02will be beneficial to your overall performance
01:00:04and starting position in laser run.
01:00:08Cape French next in.
01:00:10Yeah, what a devastating ride, didn't she?
01:00:13Yeah, 279?
01:00:16269?
01:00:17What was it?
01:00:19Let me just double check.
01:00:21Double check to be accurate.
01:00:22Yeah.
01:00:24Have a look on the table.
01:00:25Certainly the conclusion of this.
01:00:31French then against the four wins Prokopenko.
01:00:38French looking to try and knock her off a perch.
01:00:43Welcome final goal in 2021 in Hungary.
01:00:45It was a 279.
01:00:46I was questioning myself as to whether I wrote it down properly.
01:00:48It was 279 for French in the riding.
01:00:51A double touch there was 17 on the clock.
01:00:56Cape French a very strong fencer and opponent to get by.
01:00:59Prokopenko on a roll and it is...
01:01:02How did she...
01:01:03That was perfect timing.
01:01:04It was perfect distance and Cape French didn't see that coming.
01:01:08Prokopenko is...
01:01:10Gap is close now.
01:01:11Yeah, only five seconds up to third
01:01:14and it could be a danger for the rest of the field now.
01:01:18Prokopenko will be maybe moving a bit back
01:01:21and dropping down after this swim.
01:01:23So it's good that she got those extra bonus points now.
01:01:40If you've watched this season,
01:01:42I think you can't rule out Sung Min Sung for a podium finish.
01:01:46She's incredibly strong
01:01:47and she has that determination and passion for the sport.
01:01:50She looks so in control.
01:01:52Consistent.
01:01:53Of herself.
01:01:55That's very true.
01:01:56Carries herself with such grace and elegance.
01:01:59Yeah.
01:02:01One for the question.
01:02:02I would say that she...
01:02:04I'd put her on the podium.
01:02:06I think she's going to be difficult to knock her off the podium.
01:02:08It's a good shot for a medal.
01:02:10She gets two points there.
01:02:13Sung Min Sung.
01:02:16Yeah.
01:02:17So Prokopenko leaves the piece
01:02:20but leaves with 10 extra points for her name.
01:02:23Five bonus points.
01:02:24I tried to fend Sung Min Sung
01:02:26but it was too late.
01:02:27That timing of the flush was impeccable.
01:02:29She runs off the piece.
01:02:30Prokopenko, by the way, I don't know whether you saw.
01:02:33She ran to get into her swimming kit
01:02:35and get ready for the swim.
01:02:36Such is the nature.
01:02:36It's a 90-minute format.
01:02:38It's fast-paced.
01:02:39It's right at it.
01:02:40Our next battle though is Sung Min Sung and Kim.
01:02:50Career on career, as it were.
01:02:53It's very interesting to see the battle between
01:02:56teammates from the same nation.
01:02:58You can see Sung Min Sung with another flush.
01:03:02Um Joo Kim was a bit slow with the reflexes and reaction time there
01:03:06but Sung wins this bout.
01:03:11And...
01:03:16Good win there.
01:03:17Career on career.
01:03:18Must be difficult for when you're battling against your teammate.
01:03:22Must be.
01:03:22Yeah, must be difficult always.
01:03:24It's um...
01:03:25Marlene Jawid is next in.
01:03:27Our leader.
01:03:28So this one has four points on it for a Jawid win.
01:03:34Sung Min Sung remains on the piece.
01:03:36And Jawid, we have to give her credit.
01:03:40From the qualifications all the way through to the finals.
01:03:43Now she's done really really well in all disciplines
01:03:46and after that ride she's good for first at this point.
01:03:51So Jawid managed to get another four points.
01:03:58Opening up the distance.
01:04:00It's a parry but no touch.
01:04:03No touch?
01:04:04Yeah, it was uh...
01:04:06If the athlete turns around,
01:04:08gets their back to the other athlete,
01:04:09then it's a no touch.
01:04:1750 seconds on the clock now.
01:04:18Sung with the momentum but it's a double touch at 13 seconds.
01:04:24Jawid maybe needs to open up the distance now.
01:04:28Goes for the high line.
01:04:30Is it a touch?
01:04:31I don't think it is.
01:04:34It was a cor-a-cor which means body touch
01:04:37and it's an automatic halt.
01:04:41Not long left but the victory goes to Sung.
01:04:49So that's three for her and an extra six points.
01:04:51Mariam, it looks like the success stories are
01:04:55Prokopenko, Ozyuksu and Sung Min Sung in the bonus round there.
01:05:00Yeah, they've snagged some really valuable points now.
01:05:06We always say the bonus round isn't as impactful
01:05:10but it can be when you go on a run.
01:05:13Yeah, run a five, run a four that is.
01:05:16That's when things get really significant.
01:05:18Prokopenko picked up five so those 10 points.
01:05:20Four for Ozyuksu and three for Sung Min Sung.
01:05:25So our athletes now just having a quick look
01:05:29and I'm sure we'll show the graphic at some stage if we can.
01:05:32But the leaderboard is Marlene Jawid is on five, four, three.
01:05:38She is leading Sung Min Sung second place
01:05:41and Selma Abdelmaksoud at five, two, eight.
01:05:44Here's the highlights of the fencing.
01:05:59So
01:06:09so
01:06:28so that was the fencing bonus round for our athletes.
01:06:32Yeah, bonus round we say goodbye to
01:06:35and we'll come back to you in the men's final
01:06:36but it's now off to the pool.
01:06:39Yep, the pool just a stone's throw from the fencing arena
01:06:42and our athletes in the 25 meter pool
01:06:44have a 200 meter freestyle event ahead of them.
01:06:49Two and a half minutes is the target
01:06:52and that target, Mariam, achievable of course.
01:06:58But it's you against you against the clock.
01:07:02Yeah, athletes warming up in the shade in that prep area.
01:07:07Trying to stay cool out of the swim
01:07:08and could arguably be the best part of the day
01:07:12jumping into that cool pool
01:07:14after being in the sun and the ride and the bonus round.
01:07:18Crowd's getting bigger by the minute by the way.
01:07:20Yep, love to see that.
01:07:22Yeah, heading to the stands and
01:07:24and watching the incredible sport
01:07:32that is modern pentathlon in action.
01:07:34Finals day, medals day for these athletes.
01:07:37Women's final this morning
01:07:39and then men's comes in the evening.
01:07:43They're a little technical problem we've got here in Zhengzhou
01:07:46but we'll get into things very very soon.
01:07:47But just to let you know the gap at the moment
01:07:49in terms of the leaderboard
01:07:50looks 4th to 5th, Prokopenko to Cape French.
01:07:545-2-3 plays 5-14.
01:07:56That's probably the significant gap.
01:07:59There's a significant gap.
01:08:00Marlene Djaweed, close.
01:08:03But Abdelmaksoud 2nd to 3rd.
01:08:04There's a bit in there as well.
01:08:065-3-9 versus 5-2-8.
01:08:08If you'd like to see the live leaderboard
01:08:09I would recommend you download the UIPM app.
01:08:12Yeah, we'll check the website as well.
01:08:14Yes, go on to the modern pentathlon on the left-hand side
01:08:17and then select women's final
01:08:18and you'll be able to see as we are.
01:08:19We are currently looking on my phone at the leaderboard
01:08:23and you can do the same.
01:08:24Simply go to your app store, download the UIPM app
01:08:27and you'll be able to see the results as they stand, Marion.
01:08:31Yeah, but to be honest, I think all the way down to...
01:08:35Who has a chance?
01:08:36I think all the way down to 11th standard chance of podium finishes
01:08:41but we'll see things getting mixed up after the swim.
01:08:44So these aren't final results yet.
01:08:47Some of our crowd getting their priorities right.
01:08:50Phone in hand, yes, for pictures
01:08:51but fan in hand as well.
01:08:52I applaud your efforts, madam.
01:08:54Well done.
01:08:55The hand fan for...
01:08:58Lithuanians, yeah.
01:08:59The Lithuanians down there as well.
01:09:02And that lady in the middle is just scrolling
01:09:03and looking at some of the pictures on UIPM's Instagram page.
01:09:06Yeah, that's Yeva Serapiniaiti, Lithuanian athlete.
01:09:10Didn't manage to make it through to the finals
01:09:13but a very accomplished athlete
01:09:14and here to support her Lithuanian counterpart.
01:09:19Venkauskaiti is competing in this final.
01:09:22And there, it's up there, there is the...
01:09:25I think the climbing demonstration.
01:09:28There it is, told you.
01:09:29There it is, you can see it right there.
01:09:30You can see the bars and the climbing, the demonstration.
01:09:33All the youngsters are getting involved.
01:09:34We've got a wonderful crowd gathering as well.
01:09:36James Anadakis is trackside for us.
01:09:41Well, Charlie Brown, firstly, good to see you up on your feet
01:09:44after yesterday's efforts.
01:09:45You collapsed over the finish line.
01:09:46We're going to build up to swimming in a moment
01:09:48but just sort of checking you're okay
01:09:49because I know you put absolutely everything
01:09:51into your semi-final yesterday.
01:09:52Yeah, so yesterday's semi-final didn't quite go to plan.
01:09:57My last shoot wasn't exactly what I wanted
01:10:00but despite the gap being really big
01:10:02when I came out of the range in 10th place,
01:10:04I still didn't give up
01:10:05and tried to catch the Korean guy in 9th place
01:10:08even with maybe a 100-meter gap.
01:10:11So yeah, I gave everything I could.
01:10:12I think that's the attitude we have in the team.
01:10:16Just don't give up until the last second
01:10:19even if it means that I'm collapsing over the line
01:10:20with nothing left to give.
01:10:22So yeah.
01:10:23It's good to see you working so hard
01:10:25and good to see you're okay.
01:10:27We talk about the fine margins of Pentathlon.
01:10:29Swimming seems to be one of those places
01:10:31you can make up time
01:10:32because it's up to each individual athlete
01:10:34how much effort they're putting into swimming.
01:10:37We talk about this all the time in the build-up to swimming
01:10:39but it's because it's different for each individual athlete.
01:10:42Is it worth giving 100%
01:10:44to try and make up that extra few moments ahead of Laser Run
01:10:47or do you need to hold back a little bit
01:10:49so that you can save a bit of energy
01:10:50for like what example happened to you yesterday
01:10:52where you need to save a bit of energy for that final lap?
01:10:53What's your thoughts on that?
01:10:55I think it's about finding what's best for you as an athlete.
01:10:58There's also the situation of being in the first swim heat
01:11:03or the last swim heat.
01:11:04If you're in the last swim heat,
01:11:05you've got less time to shake off that lactic acid
01:11:07before the Laser Run.
01:11:09You've also got to think about
01:11:11what's going to be best for your shooting and running
01:11:13when you're swimming that swim.
01:11:17I think most of the time athletes don't swim max for sure.
01:11:19They do ease off
01:11:21but it depends what you can cope with.
01:11:23It's finding that balance,
01:11:24working and experimenting and training
01:11:26or previous competitions to get it right.
01:11:28A competition like World Champs.
01:11:30The athletes are on their way
01:11:31so we're going to give back to the guys in the commentary box in a moment
01:11:33but just before we do,
01:11:33is there a sweet spot for you?
01:11:35Is there a heat you would ideally be in
01:11:36in preparation for the Laser Run?
01:11:38I'm guessing it's heat one.
01:11:40No, obviously I think the more points the better
01:11:43so you want to be in the final heat.
01:11:45You will pace it a bit slower in the final heat
01:11:48but yeah, you always want the points over the easier heat for sure.
01:11:51All right, listen, we'll get you out of the sun
01:11:53because you had enough of that yesterday.
01:11:54Thanks for your time, mate
01:11:54and well done for all your efforts yesterday.
01:11:56Thanks, James.
01:11:57Thank you.
01:11:57Well done, Charlie Brown.
01:12:00Charlie Brown representing himself very well
01:12:02off the course as well as on the course, Mariam.
01:12:05Yeah, just missed out on finals yesterday.
01:12:08We saw that big sprint finish
01:12:10but it was just too late.
01:12:12Myles Pillage was incredible in that last shoot
01:12:15and made his way through
01:12:17but it was just one of the British boys
01:12:20who made it through from the finals.
01:12:22Joseph Chung also missed out on finals.
01:12:26So Team GB being represented this evening by Myles Pillage.
01:12:32And we will be back later on for that men's final.
01:12:35It's going to be a cracker
01:12:36but we've still got plenty of action here at the women
01:12:40as our judges and our assistants
01:12:46and all of those in charge of officiating, shall we say?
01:12:52Yeah.
01:12:52Swimming events.
01:12:53All in hands.
01:12:54One per lane.
01:12:55Yes.
01:12:55Yes, yes.
01:12:57We're watching the starts
01:12:58as we briefly saw a start list there
01:13:00but I can give you the start list.
01:13:02In lane one will be Mariana Arceo with Blanca Bauer,
01:13:06Van Jang of Korea in three
01:13:08and a Jurte of Switzerland in four.
01:13:11Gitarra Benkoskaiti of Lithuania in five
01:13:15and Michele Goulash will go in lane six
01:13:19according to their average times.
01:13:21It's lane six of Michele Goulash, the Hungarian
01:13:24who is the standout performer, quite frankly,
01:13:27at 2 minutes 10 in her qualification time, that is.
01:13:31Qualification time.
01:13:32As our athletes get the big build up.
01:13:34The hoodies are out again.
01:13:37Maybe they're getting cold.
01:13:39Here she is, Mariana Arceo.
01:13:46Do you subscribe to the feeling?
01:13:47I was thinking about this with Mariana yesterday and today.
01:13:51Do you subscribe to the theory, Mariana,
01:13:53having been an athlete yourself, feel good, play good?
01:13:56Because I think Mariana clearly does.
01:13:58She likes to...
01:13:59Do you know what?
01:13:59I think it's very personal from one athlete to another.
01:14:02Yeah, does it?
01:14:03So I could turn up and play football
01:14:05looking like a bag of spanners,
01:14:07but I don't really care.
01:14:10Some people put aftershave on or perfume on,
01:14:13makeup on, do their hair.
01:14:15Because you feel good, you feel good, you play good.
01:14:17Yeah, I think, like you said,
01:14:18it depends on every athlete.
01:14:20Blanka Bauer is out as well,
01:14:22and Ty and Jan making their way out.
01:14:24But for me, I think staying focused,
01:14:28but not being, I don't know, cold.
01:14:33Yep.
01:14:33Not being cold, but staying focused.
01:14:35Because if I kind of laugh and joke around too much,
01:14:40I feel like I'm out of that zone I should be in.
01:14:43Some athletes find it better
01:14:45and it helps them with their mood.
01:14:48As Anna Yurtkitar and Venkav Skyti are out as well.
01:14:53More athletes making their way.
01:14:55Venkav Skyti with two bottles of water in her hand.
01:14:57Hydration.
01:14:58Sensible.
01:15:00And Michel Gouliash is in lane number six.
01:15:05It's sadly the end of Michel's competition
01:15:10without elimination in the ride.
01:15:12No one else with an elimination,
01:15:13so she will be finishing this competition in 18th
01:15:15regardless of her swim time.
01:15:19But again, this is good experience.
01:15:22This is one more race before the Olympics.
01:15:25And she'll want to perform well here.
01:15:29So our athletes then a 200 meter freestyle swim.
01:15:32Ah, one of the bottles of water was for the starting blocks.
01:15:38Because they are hot.
01:15:39That's why they're doing that, folks.
01:15:40Normally want a dry starting block.
01:15:42But some of the athletes may feel they...
01:15:45Oh!
01:15:46On their feet.
01:15:48What is it they feel, Mariam?
01:15:50You do it.
01:15:51Oh!
01:15:52That kind of sounds like a start.
01:15:55That wasn't the start.
01:15:56It wasn't a false start.
01:15:57Away they go then.
01:15:58This in heat one of the three heats.
01:16:01And we were expecting in lane six
01:16:07there to be Michel Gouliash.
01:16:10We can see in six.
01:16:11Does take an early lead here, Mariam.
01:16:13Yeah, I think she's going to be giving it her all.
01:16:15I mean, at this point,
01:16:16she doesn't have to save anything for anything.
01:16:18She's going to finish in 18th anyways.
01:16:20So yeah, just put in 100%.
01:16:23Enjoy the rest of your competition.
01:16:26So Gouliash is there.
01:16:30But then the Garcia is too far away.
01:16:32In fact, potentially even just nudged ahead
01:16:34into the lead in lane one.
01:16:36The Mexican just behind Michel Gouliash.
01:16:39But again, Gouliash is effectively
01:16:42out of the competition really.
01:16:43So forgive us for maybe giving the Mexican
01:16:50Mariam Garcia a little bit of air time in there.
01:16:53But it's definitely lane six.
01:16:55Michel Gouliash who's in there.
01:16:57Gouliash touches and away she goes.
01:16:59Look at that pace as she turns to the wall.
01:17:01I think if you attack the wall with pace,
01:17:03then the rebound from that push to the wall
01:17:07is going to be a lot more impactful.
01:17:09Kinetic energy.
01:17:10Kinetic energy and momentum.
01:17:13Coilspring all these athletes, aren't they?
01:17:18Off they go.
01:17:20So it's approaching the 100 meter mark now.
01:17:26Halfway through the race.
01:17:27Quite a gap.
01:17:28Quite a gap for Michel Gouliash,
01:17:30who is effectively eliminated.
01:17:32She was eliminated from the riding.
01:17:33So minus 300 is a real test.
01:17:36Gouliash there, Arceo and Blanka Bauer.
01:17:38Actually, sorry, I said halfway.
01:17:40It's final 50 meters now as they approach the final turn.
01:17:44These athletes, Michel Gouliash is in a league of her own.
01:17:47I think almost two or three lengths ahead of everyone else.
01:17:51She can blast as much as she wants.
01:17:52She can, yeah.
01:17:53She's got nothing to lose.
01:17:55She doesn't have to push hard in the laser.
01:17:57I think she'll be giving 100% in everything now.
01:17:59Yeah, and why not?
01:18:01It's going to be a quick time.
01:18:02It's quicker than a qualifying time.
01:18:042.09.
01:18:05It's a sub 10 swim for Michel Gouliash.
01:18:08How incredible was that?
01:18:09Blanka Bauer, five seconds behind Mariana Arceo
01:18:12coming home in third.
01:18:16So in 2.09, Gouliash wins it.
01:18:21I think Blanka Bauer is at 2.15 and Mariana Arceo in 2.16.
01:18:36It's good to see Michel Gouliash
01:18:40swimming hard and keeping her spirits up in the midst of everything,
01:18:44which she's elite enough to know that this happens in sports
01:18:48and competition doesn't go your way all the time.
01:18:51And I think we've lost some big, big names in this competition
01:18:55in both the men's and the women's.
01:18:57We've lost Elodie Cluvel from the semi-finals.
01:19:01We now lost Michel Gouliash after the ride
01:19:04and provisional results up on your screen.
01:19:07And just to clarify, do you think internally
01:19:09she's not going to finish any higher than 18th, right?
01:19:13Internally?
01:19:14As in internally, she's going to think, can I finish 17th?
01:19:18She can catch 17th because even if she's behind in 18th,
01:19:24she needs to get out of the start-finish line at 1.30.
01:19:29That's the maximum you can be in there.
01:19:31So she might go and try to catch 17th.
01:19:34Yeah, so I'm just wondering internally,
01:19:35she might have a little battle with herself.
01:19:37Let's turn 18th to 17th.
01:19:38I think she's going to take it quite like a training session.
01:19:41Yeah, well, it's the ultimate training session, isn't it?
01:19:43The world championship final.
01:19:44Because you can't replicate the crowd.
01:19:46You can't replicate the energy.
01:19:48Yeah, circumstances.
01:19:50Yeah, so Sunwoo Kim is the first athlete
01:19:52towards the pool for semi-final at heat two.
01:19:55I beg your pardon, in the final.
01:19:56Heat two in the final for clarity.
01:19:59Blanca Guzzi representing Hungary
01:20:01is the quickest of these six athletes
01:20:04according to her qualification time of 2.13.
01:20:07She's pumped, by the way.
01:20:09She is excited for this race,
01:20:10excited to put everything in the pool.
01:20:12So is Azunxa with the headphones.
01:20:15She's looking chill.
01:20:16She is in good for me.
01:20:19They are a pair of headphones, Tamara Vega.
01:20:21They're Apple headphones, aren't they?
01:20:22There's other brands available for the record.
01:20:25But she's got some opera on the go, maybe.
01:20:30Ning Yuchang next in.
01:20:32And Rita Eros will be the final athlete for heat number two.
01:20:39And in towards the pool they come.
01:20:42So it's heat number two here
01:20:49in the pool for these finalists
01:20:52in the women's modern pentathlon world championship final
01:20:55here in Zhengzhou in China.
01:21:02My name is Ian Stringer.
01:21:03I'm really thankful that you've taken the time
01:21:04to join Mariam, Amur and myself.
01:21:06James Anderdak is ordinarily in this chair,
01:21:08but he's trackside doing the master of ceremonies.
01:21:13He does duties and interviews for us as well
01:21:16as we have in heat two.
01:21:19Our athletes call to their blocks.
01:21:25And big encouraging shouts from the coaches
01:21:28as the athletes take to their blocks.
01:21:32And away we go.
01:21:33Heat number two in the pool.
01:21:34A good break from lane four, Tamara Vega.
01:21:38But we're expecting Blanca Guzzi in lane two
01:21:41to lead out.
01:21:42They're pretty close there.
01:21:44You got to say.
01:21:46I think it's because Zook's on the transverse,
01:21:48but we'll see this with times as they make their way
01:21:51to the first 50 meter mark.
01:21:55Is that Sunwoo Kim as well who's up in that battle for first?
01:21:59They're all pretty much neck and neck.
01:22:00They're very close.
01:22:01Potentially lane six.
01:22:04No, lane one, Sunwoo Kim.
01:22:06All together.
01:22:07Guzzi, nothing in it.
01:22:08Yeah, all within the same second.
01:22:12So second 50 meters is where you see some athletes
01:22:16breaking away and they're not.
01:22:17They're all together.
01:22:19Pacing each other.
01:22:20And to be honest, to be fair as well,
01:22:23looking at their qualification time,
01:22:24they're all pretty close together,
01:22:26except for Rita Erdos.
01:22:27And I'm wondering, did she hold back in the semifinals
01:22:30to put everything into this final?
01:22:32Maybe she didn't swim as hard.
01:22:33And that's why she's keeping up pace with these athletes.
01:22:36100 meter mark now.
01:22:38Sunwoo Kim and Guzzi on point one.
01:22:41Almost touched together.
01:22:43Zhang, not too far away, but it is.
01:22:47Blanca Guzzi in lane two at the top of your picture,
01:22:51just about.
01:22:53I think that's the closest we've ever had in this new format.
01:22:57Zhang is going to be close.
01:22:58And China as well.
01:23:00Those three, Guzzi, Sunwoo Kim and Zhang
01:23:03in a battle of their own for
01:23:05who touches the wall first.
01:23:06Again, as you said, it's a battle against the clock,
01:23:08but a battle of pride for these three athletes.
01:23:12Blanca Guzzi turning with that red hat.
01:23:15Turning in first place.
01:23:16And she's turned the afterburners on a little here, Mariam.
01:23:18Yeah, she's really...
01:23:20I think she's stopped taking as much breaths
01:23:23as she usually does.
01:23:24Actually, she's now back to her rhythm.
01:23:26But she's staying nicely in the beginning
01:23:30of that final 50 meters.
01:23:33This is going to be a really quick time from Guzzi, by the way.
01:23:36I think around a 2.10, maybe just over.
01:23:40Guzzi is going to touch out in first.
01:23:42How close to the 2.10 is it going to be?
01:23:43We had a 2.09 in the previous heat.
01:23:45It's a 2.14 for Blanca Guzzi.
01:23:48Very, very solid time.
01:23:51That is the quickest time apart from Michelle Gugliel.
01:23:56She was out of running.
01:23:58Zhang and Vega in second and third.
01:24:02So that's swimming heat two done.
01:24:07And these athletes will then try and shake it off
01:24:11as best they can to get ready for their laser run.
01:24:28So there's a replay of heat number two.
01:24:31And the red cap Mariam Amer of our winner.
01:24:37Looking strong.
01:24:38Blanca Guzzi looked very strong, didn't she?
01:24:39Ultimately, kept a bit in the tank and then finished strong.
01:24:42You can see that finish as she touches the wall.
01:24:45That could be a difference between one second and another.
01:24:47Just really giving it that push at the end
01:24:49and using her kicks to kind of back that up.
01:24:52Guzzi now in provisional first place,
01:24:55which leaves her at least in seventh place.
01:25:01It's hot.
01:25:02It is hot.
01:25:03It is hot out there.
01:25:05Lovely to see a good crowd here today as well, by the way.
01:25:08But so the stadium, as the sun's moving,
01:25:11the stadium, more and more of it is ending up in shade.
01:25:14And only the real hardy souls are in the sunshine
01:25:18at the minute, I can tell you that.
01:25:20So here is the start list for heat number three.
01:25:23And our leading pack, as it were.
01:25:26Jawid, who is leading out first.
01:25:29Song, Abdul-Maktoum, Prokopenko, French and Eun-Joo Kim
01:25:37in heat number three.
01:25:38Interesting, Charlie Brown said,
01:25:39I'd rather be in heat number three
01:25:40because it means I'm near the top.
01:25:42And to be honest, I think they all would.
01:25:45I mean, because you get more rest time,
01:25:47but then again, if you're in the top,
01:25:49then you're quite in the lead, aren't you?
01:25:51So it's, I think, yeah,
01:25:53I think they'd much rather be in heat number three
01:25:56and take it a little easier in the pool
01:25:58than lose out on a lot of points and be behind.
01:26:04Song Winsong makes her way out.
01:26:07And Salma Abdel-Maksoud
01:26:12as well.
01:26:13A little bit of sensible
01:26:17staying out of the sun from Prokopenko.
01:26:20Vastly experienced, Prokopenko.
01:26:23World Championship bronze in 17,
01:26:25World Cup, World Championship gold in Mexico in 18,
01:26:29Hungary World Championship fourth in 19.
01:26:33She has got a trophy cabinet full
01:26:35as well as World Championship gold in Egypt in 21.
01:26:39So out comes Cape French
01:26:41and out comes Eun-Joo Kim as well.
01:26:45Kim with a bronze in the World Champs in 2019
01:26:50in Budapest.
01:26:51So they are the Crème de la Crème, Mariam.
01:26:53These are the best we got.
01:26:54Yeah, but you can see it with their trophy cabinets.
01:26:58They've got the medals to prove it.
01:26:59Yeah, but we like to see a bit of youth as well.
01:27:02Blanka Bauer at the age of 18
01:27:03and Haiyan Zhang at just 19.
01:27:08Great to see a nice sprinkling of youth
01:27:11amongst the experience.
01:27:14Heat three.
01:27:15Actually, a lot of athletes, the 18 who have already qualified
01:27:19have opted to not come.
01:27:21So Korea has sent out their B team with Zhang, for example,
01:27:24who isn't competing in the senior scene at all this year.
01:27:28So it's good to give the youngsters the opportunity
01:27:31to compete amongst the elite.
01:27:33Looking at the times here.
01:27:34Salma Abdel Maksoud at 2.11 is head and shoulders.
01:27:42That was an interesting start.
01:27:44Very quick reflexes.
01:27:45Salma Abdel Maksoud and...
01:27:52Side by side with Abdel Maksoud.
01:27:53This is very close.
01:27:54Yeah, very close between those three athletes
01:27:56breaking away from the pack already
01:27:58as they approach the first 50 meter mark.
01:28:01Salma Abdel Maksoud might be pulling away a bit.
01:28:04We'll see the split times as they turn over the wall now.
01:28:10Actually, it's Sung.
01:28:12Sung is in first.
01:28:12Salma Abdel Maksoud and Cape French all on within a second.
01:28:20Yeah, so it's lane three.
01:28:21Salma Abdel Maksoud who's trying to close in.
01:28:24I think she might have just taken the lead.
01:28:26Yeah, I think she turned into a wall before Sung.
01:28:32Sung on her inside.
01:28:34And then two outside is Cape French.
01:28:37French is holding on quite well, if not gaining a little bit.
01:28:41Abdel Maksoud, Cape French might touch in third.
01:28:43She does.
01:28:45But it's pretty tight.
01:28:46Less than a second separating the top three.
01:28:48But again, all against the clock.
01:28:50You can see the difference between the top athletes
01:28:52and the athletes further back behind.
01:28:54The top athletes go into that wall
01:28:57and attack it a lot more aggressively
01:28:59and use that momentum to push over the wall.
01:29:01You can see someone like Verlina Jouy
01:29:03just giving a little bit of space
01:29:05and not really utilizing that speed
01:29:07that she's gained throughout that straight.
01:29:10And that could make a big difference
01:29:13in your time at the end of the race.
01:29:15Abdel Maksoud then touches in first.
01:29:18And Sung second.
01:29:20And Cape French now.
01:29:21There's a couple of second gap.
01:29:22That was a second.
01:29:23It's now doubled.
01:29:24So it suggests to me that Abdel Maksoud
01:29:26is up in the pace slightly here.
01:29:28But Sung Winson is trying to keep pace with her
01:29:30and potentially, you know, closing it down a little.
01:29:33This turn will be interesting.
01:29:34Yeah, Salma Abdel Maksoud again with that gallop style.
01:29:37You can see that works well.
01:29:38Really well in the 200 meters.
01:29:40I think Sung Winson is now pushing hard.
01:29:43It's going to be an all-out battle.
01:29:45Five meters to go for these athletes.
01:29:46I think Sung Winson might be
01:29:48in the lead a little bit here.
01:29:49It's going to be around the same time
01:29:51for these athletes.
01:29:52Just 0.06 separating them.
01:29:54Both on 212.
01:29:55Both get the same points.
01:29:57212 then for Sung Winson.
01:30:05Over the line.
01:30:07Cape French in third with three seconds behind.
01:30:11So we've had the heats of the swimming.
01:30:13Then Mariam.
01:30:14It's probably fair to say that
01:30:15Michelle Goulias with the 209
01:30:17is the athlete to beat.
01:30:21Most successful, but she's eliminated.
01:30:23Yeah, unfortunate to see always a top contender
01:30:26for medal positions being eliminated
01:30:29from the competition.
01:30:32Yeah, so athletes in the first and second heat
01:30:35already taking to the track now
01:30:38in preparation for the ever-dramatic laser
01:30:40on which we will have soon.
01:30:42But this is the replacement of heat number three.
01:30:53And those are your top six athletes of the day.
01:30:56So some pretty quick times.
01:30:58I think it's going to help them
01:31:00maintain their positions
01:31:02and kind of solidify them
01:31:04in the top three.
01:31:06And we'll take a look at how that affects
01:31:08the scores shortly.
01:31:10But show you a leaderboard
01:31:12and that will give you an indication
01:31:13and an idea heading into the laser run
01:31:16as to who still fancies a medal.
01:31:19And this is where Mariam
01:31:21puts her expertise and knowledge
01:31:23of the sport on the line.
01:31:25Hopefully.
01:31:26Sung Winson is in first place.
01:31:28And considerably so.
01:31:30It's 11 seconds the gap now
01:31:31between Sung and Jowit.
01:31:33Some of them are bang on points
01:31:35with Jowit, by the way.
01:31:36So joint second.
01:31:37And then it's a bit of a drop off to Guzi.
01:31:40So these three have done well to break away
01:31:42from the rest of the pack.
01:31:43But it all comes down to the range.
01:31:45It does.
01:31:46It does.
01:31:46Of those, as we head to our wraps,
01:31:50we can get a more detailed look
01:31:52at the leaderboard.
01:31:55Of those who could break in,
01:31:57but we'll maybe pick that up
01:31:58in a few moments time
01:31:59as we preview the laser run.
01:32:01Let's look back on this swimming discipline.
01:32:03Shall we?
01:32:33So our swimming discipline complete.
01:32:55Yeah, final time.
01:32:56These women will be swimming in this pool.
01:32:58And we have a move from the pool
01:33:01and the swimming done now.
01:33:03So we've had riding.
01:33:04We've had fencing.
01:33:04We've had swimming of the disciplines.
01:33:07And the athletes make a move
01:33:08from the swimming arena,
01:33:09the swimming pool down to the laser run.
01:33:11And here is where the medals are won and lost.
01:33:14Five laps of the 600 meter track,
01:33:16four trips to the shooting range.
01:33:17A reminder, the first lap is pistol-less.
01:33:21It does not involve a trip to the range.
01:33:24The second lap does.
01:33:25So four trips to the range,
01:33:27five targets from 10 meters
01:33:29in 50 seconds or less.
01:33:31And then our athletes complete the rest of the course.
01:33:34I should point out,
01:33:35and you'll see it very soon
01:33:36from our cameras out and around on the course,
01:33:39you can see it starkly there.
01:33:41It's sunny.
01:33:42There is no part of this entire track
01:33:46or shooting arena, back straight,
01:33:49bend that's in shade.
01:33:52Yeah, it's going to be some trying conditions
01:33:55for these athletes.
01:33:57I was just going to say that the athletes
01:33:59kind of think of laser run,
01:34:00which we see the POV of right now.
01:34:02Patrick Dogg, we strapped a camera to.
01:34:05It was yesterday.
01:34:06And yeah, to kind of show you how the track goes.
01:34:10He heads into the shooting,
01:34:12but of course we don't have shooting in the first lap
01:34:15for these athletes.
01:34:16You can see Patrick Dogg showing off five shots,
01:34:20five out of five for Patrick Dogg.
01:34:22If you can only replicate that in the actual laser run.
01:34:25And then some of the tight turns come into play.
01:34:27And Mariam and I have walked this already this morning.
01:34:29That is tight.
01:34:31It is.
01:34:31You've got to get a lot of power down on your left foot
01:34:34as you come around that corner.
01:34:35And then again, it's kind of corner city around here.
01:34:38There's a turn there and maybe a hundred paces
01:34:41and a really big horseshoe hairpin turn.
01:34:46And then pretty much Mariam,
01:34:47you're into the final bend and the final straight.
01:34:50Yeah, that turns are tight, but.
01:34:55Turns are tight, but it is a very quick course.
01:34:58And we've had some incredible times
01:35:00with the men and women in semifinals and qualifications.
01:35:04So I think we might be seeing that in finals as well.
01:35:09Just to go back to the fact that I was talking about
01:35:13athletes thinking of laser run
01:35:15as an entirely different competition.
01:35:17Everything leading up to laser run is one competition,
01:35:19but the laser run,
01:35:20you feel like you're heading into
01:35:21a whole different universe atmosphere.
01:35:24It is a very intense.
01:35:26This is what has to be said.
01:35:28You have a mix of endurance, speed, focus.
01:35:33There's a psychological game involved with the range as well.
01:35:36And you can see all these athletes
01:35:38coming in and out of the range.
01:35:39You can see people passing you,
01:35:41people shooting well, running well.
01:35:45And it's an ice vest in operation,
01:35:49a visor in operation, a cold towel in operation
01:35:52and some electrolytes in the water.
01:35:54I saw an orange water there in operation as well.
01:35:57So fine margins, Mariam Amur and our athletes
01:36:00have got to get the best out of themselves that they can.
01:36:03They do look at them all with the ice packs.
01:36:05They're trying to prevent heat stroke here
01:36:07because you don't want that.
01:36:08It's five times 600 meters.
01:36:10It's not that quick.
01:36:10It's almost 15 minutes they have in the sun.
01:36:14Yeah, they need to make sure that everything's in order
01:36:18and that their body temp is cool enough
01:36:21to go through the pieces of this race without any issues.
01:36:25And the big thing with heat stroke,
01:36:27obviously it is going to affect your run
01:36:29and your muscles and everything.
01:36:30But I think the big thing is in the range
01:36:32because if you get dizzy in the range,
01:36:35that's effectively you're shooting gone.
01:36:37Stability is gone.
01:36:40Mental toughness is gone.
01:36:43Yeah, it's all about holding on to that focus.
01:36:45And if you have anything that affects that,
01:36:47that could be detrimental to your performance.
01:36:50Just looking at the temperature at the moment,
01:36:52as we speak, 34 degrees feels like 37.
01:36:56And that sounds hot and it sounds ridiculous.
01:36:58I know.
01:36:59I'm going to tell you this.
01:37:00It's been hotter.
01:37:01And the ice pack on the head is quite simple
01:37:05that you don't want to be gaining heat on your head at all.
01:37:09Your body is just going to shut down.
01:37:11It is going to shut down.
01:37:12And again, we talked about the focus in the range
01:37:16and that could definitely affect that.
01:37:18You could get dizzy.
01:37:19You can get caught up with sweating and electrolyte loss.
01:37:26Yeah, obviously our athletes taking the electrolyte on.
01:37:29So we're going to bring you very soon the start list.
01:37:32We've just been handed it and we can reflect
01:37:36on who's got the advantage
01:37:38and where the challenges are going to come
01:37:40with nine minutes to go until the start.
01:37:43Yeah, something that's actually very overlooked.
01:37:45I was talking to the Egyptian team physio
01:37:47about this a couple of days ago.
01:37:48Training is extremely important.
01:37:51But the two main factors of recovery isn't massages.
01:37:55It isn't form rolling.
01:37:56It's sleep and eat.
01:37:58Yeah, sleep and food.
01:37:59The most important factor is speeds up your recovery time.
01:38:03It gives you the energy you need.
01:38:05It rebuilds your muscles.
01:38:07Yeah, everything happens during sleep
01:38:09and nutrition you take that supports that as well
01:38:12is incredibly important.
01:38:13Those athletes will be really focusing on that
01:38:17and make sure they had that done in the past couple of days.
01:38:21Lots of sleep, lots of food, good food, healthy food.
01:38:24Because again, their sponge has been run dry
01:38:27and effectively that's how energy works
01:38:30within your muscles, isn't it?
01:38:31That the two and a half thousand or so calories
01:38:33that you can carry in sugar, glucose.
01:38:38Energy just...
01:38:39Yeah, you've got to replace it.
01:38:40You've got to replace it fast
01:38:41because that sponge is empty.
01:38:43As our athletes continue their warm-up,
01:38:47Ariana Aseo is going to start.
01:38:50Okay, predictions time.
01:38:52Well, let's have a look then, shall we?
01:38:53You and I can...
01:38:54We've got it in front of us.
01:38:55We'll show you very, very soon.
01:38:56But Song Min Sung will start out.
01:38:58There's an 11 second gap to Abdul Maqsood.
01:39:02That's significant.
01:39:04I don't think...
01:39:04I think Song Min Sung wins gold.
01:39:07Okay, Song Min Sung gold.
01:39:09We'll come back for our predictions in a few moments time.
01:39:12James Zanderakis is trackside for us in the sun.
01:39:16Well, Ahmed, we were just watching
01:39:18some of your preparations there with Ilker Ozuksu.
01:39:20I guess the main theme here is trying to keep a cool.
01:39:24Yeah, dehydration.
01:39:27We have to miss from that
01:39:28because there is not only the outer competition.
01:39:32Also, we have to make it...
01:39:33We have to compete with our physiology,
01:39:36physiologically and mentally.
01:39:38That's in fact...
01:39:39Sometimes it's very hard.
01:39:41It's about 14 centigrade degree
01:39:44and also high humidity.
01:39:46It will be very hard.
01:39:47And if somebody has dehydration,
01:39:51it takes maybe some weeks or some days
01:39:54to get out of them.
01:39:56It will be very hard.
01:39:57You can't afford any injuries, can you?
01:39:58Especially not at this point of the season
01:40:00with the Olympics now less than two months away.
01:40:03A lot of preparations, not just for this race,
01:40:04but looking further forward as well.
01:40:06Now they are in the last experience
01:40:10for them before the Olympics.
01:40:12They suffered so much.
01:40:13They had pain so much.
01:40:14They didn't sleep very well.
01:40:16They trained so much.
01:40:17High altitude, away from their home,
01:40:21maybe find a house,
01:40:23but away from their home,
01:40:24their friends, their celebration.
01:40:27But now it comes from the ancient meaning of pentathlon.
01:40:34From ancient pentathlon
01:40:35comes to the modern pentathlon,
01:40:37maybe changing after the Olympics.
01:40:40But this is life.
01:40:41Coming, going, out, down, uphill,
01:40:44everything inside.
01:40:46I think with this weather,
01:40:49the finish line will be very hard.
01:40:52There should be firework in the finish line
01:40:55because it will be very hard for some athletes.
01:40:58Let's look before the Olympics
01:41:01what we can do
01:41:02and what the others do.
01:41:04Somehow today it feels warmer
01:41:06than it has other days,
01:41:07even though it is about four or five degrees cooler
01:41:09than it was for semifinals.
01:41:10Feels warmer today.
01:41:11Ilker is starting in seventh place.
01:41:13Listen, the front three have a bit of a lead.
01:41:15Ilker in seventh place,
01:41:1640 seconds off of first place.
01:41:18Can she do it?
01:41:19Can she get into the medal positions?
01:41:21She did before.
01:41:22As I said,
01:41:23this is not only physiologically and physically,
01:41:26also mentally competition.
01:41:29At the end,
01:41:30if you can understand,
01:41:32nobody can imagine
01:41:33what will be at the finish line.
01:41:35You represented Ilker in Egypt,
01:41:39you know, before three years.
01:41:41She came from the eighth position
01:41:42and then you said that she made a spectacular run.
01:41:46She comes out of nowhere.
01:41:47I didn't forget this sentence.
01:41:49I hope she can.
01:41:50But even if she cannot do,
01:41:52the only thing is every time
01:41:54what's aiming for Ilker is,
01:41:56and for the other athletes,
01:41:58I wish whatever they can till the finish line,
01:42:01they need to do that.
01:42:02The other things,
01:42:03it's up to their positions
01:42:05or up to their suffering.
01:42:06Ahmed, thank you very much for your expertise.
01:42:08Very insightful.
01:42:09Best of luck to you and your team.
01:42:10I thank you as well.
01:42:11Thanks, thanks.
01:42:13What a wonderful, wonderful insight,
01:42:16Mariam Amur.
01:42:17That was top class.
01:42:18That's an interesting warm-up technique.
01:42:20Blanca Cousine.
01:42:22Who we're going to focus on in a few moments time.
01:42:24She has opted for rest and shade
01:42:28and cool versus practice.
01:42:31Visualizing the shooting.
01:42:33Yes, not in the shooting range,
01:42:35but visualizing it.
01:42:36Stretching her back.
01:42:36Your thoughts on that?
01:42:37I think that's a really sensible tactic.
01:42:39It is, yeah.
01:42:40Not pushing too hard before the start.
01:42:43She will be pushing incredibly hard during the race.
01:42:46Start from fourth.
01:42:47And here are her stats for Blanca Cousine.
01:42:50Yeah, two World Cup golds
01:42:52and two World Championship gold.
01:42:54I think those were at junior level.
01:42:57We'll just have to check or maybe the relays.
01:43:00She's had an 18th in the World Cup final
01:43:03and the seniors individual in Egypt 2021.
01:43:05So in terms of the finals,
01:43:06her fencing has struggled somewhat,
01:43:08but look at her laser run.
01:43:108% up.
01:43:11And that means the next page on this stat
01:43:14is going to be incredible
01:43:16because I'm going to suggest that
01:43:18she makes up time, does she?
01:43:20If she's up that much,
01:43:21start 17th, finishes 7th.
01:43:24Start 7th, finishes first.
01:43:25Start 11th, finishes 7th.
01:43:27Start 7th, finishes first.
01:43:28Blanca Cousine can laser run.
01:43:31Yeah.
01:43:32That's the story.
01:43:32So starting in fourth, 32 seconds off the lead.
01:43:37Can she win gold?
01:43:38Predictions.
01:43:39You said Sung Ming Sung, gold.
01:43:40I just asked you.
01:43:41Answer the question.
01:43:42Cousine?
01:43:43Yes.
01:43:44For gold?
01:43:46I think that's discrediting Sung Ming Sung too much.
01:43:50But I think definitely on the podium,
01:43:52maybe second or third.
01:43:53I think pushing for silver is a shot here.
01:43:57So I'm going to say in no specific order,
01:44:00Sung, Abdelmatsoud and Cousine.
01:44:04Okay.
01:44:05That's my prediction.
01:44:06Okay.
01:44:07Like it.
01:44:08Sung Ming Sung will be our next athlete.
01:44:1021 years old.
01:44:12Last month, she celebrated an important birthday.
01:44:1621.
01:44:17Last month did the athlete starting in first.
01:44:20And I think that's your gold medalist right there.
01:44:22She has looked on a different level for me.
01:44:24Yeah.
01:44:25So cool.
01:44:26Fourth in Ankara World Cup final this year.
01:44:29This is all...
01:44:31These are all the medals that she got this year.
01:44:33She didn't top...
01:44:34Her debut was this year.
01:44:35And so, yeah, three silvers this season
01:44:39and one at world championship level.
01:44:41But you can see fencing is incredible.
01:44:43Swimming is incredible.
01:44:44And her laser run is good as well.
01:44:47And we could see where she starts and where she finishes.
01:44:49I think it's around...
01:44:50Sometimes she moves up.
01:44:52World Cup final in Ankara,
01:44:53she moved from eighth to fourth.
01:44:54Woke up in Sofia, started in 15th, finished in 15th.
01:44:57And dropped down one place in Budapest.
01:45:01She starts in first now.
01:45:03Question is, where does she finish?
01:45:05Well, we will see.
01:45:07Because this, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
01:45:10is it.
01:45:12The final show for the women's this season
01:45:14ahead of the Olympic Games.
01:45:15You can hear the crowd roaring on
01:45:18and cheering for all the athletes.
01:45:19And in specific, Zhang from China,
01:45:22who's representing her country really, really well.
01:45:24She's starting down in...
01:45:28Where is Zhang?
01:45:29Zhang is starting in ninth place
01:45:31and not a million miles away, by the way.
01:45:32She is 44 seconds off the lead
01:45:35and only 33 off of second and third.
01:45:40So she puts in a good performance here.
01:45:46Could be on the podium for China.
01:45:48Where could a medal come back from?
01:45:51All the way back?
01:45:52Yeah.
01:45:56I'd stop at Ilka.
01:45:57Seventh.
01:45:59Xu Xiao is 40 seconds behind the leader
01:46:02and eight seconds behind the podium.
01:46:04Maybe back to 10th.
01:46:05Prokopenko, maybe.
01:46:07Prokopenko, who has looked pretty strong, to be honest.
01:46:10Good ride.
01:46:11Right, we're 30 seconds away from the start
01:46:13of the Women's World Cup final here
01:46:16in Zhengzhou, China, 2024.
01:46:20There's been so much for our athletes
01:46:23throughout the season and there's more to come
01:46:25because the Olympic Games in Paris
01:46:28is now just weeks away.
01:46:30But the Blue Ribbon event,
01:46:32which is the World Championships final
01:46:35for our female athletes,
01:46:37is imminent here in Zhengzhou, China.
01:46:43And away we go,
01:46:45but the hooter, the horn, the siren didn't sound.
01:46:48So there is not a false start.
01:46:51You didn't miss the start, as it were,
01:46:55but away they go.
01:46:57Yeah, we got nervy there for a second,
01:46:59but we know that she is on her way now.
01:47:01Some of the muscle of Marlena Djuid
01:47:03out of the start-finish line at the same time.
01:47:06And then it's a bit of a drop-off down to fourth,
01:47:08which is Guzi.
01:47:09It's a 22-second drop-off
01:47:12and Guzi is about to leave the start-finish line now,
01:47:15as will Kate French.
01:47:18Yeah, French and Guzi.
01:47:22Yes, Sunwoo Kim is out as well.
01:47:24This is the battle for gold, silver and bronze
01:47:26here in Zhengzhou.
01:47:28Ilka Zyxel is out the line.
01:47:29Vega is out the line.
01:47:30Zhang is out the line.
01:47:31Prokopenko about to make her way out as well.
01:47:34Formation lap, folks.
01:47:35Sunwoo shooting in the first lap.
01:47:38So we have our leader.
01:47:39Our leader is relatively happy,
01:47:44I can see, out on the course at the moment.
01:47:45And just pulling out quite a significant lead, actually.
01:47:48She has to.
01:47:49She has to push hard here
01:47:50as not to get dragged into the battle behind her.
01:47:53And Sung Ming Sung is doing well to keep pace.
01:47:56She doesn't want to push too hard,
01:47:58but relatively hard in order to keep that gap going.
01:48:02We'll see the split times as they head over the timing box.
01:48:09You can see the showers as well on the back straight.
01:48:11Some of the athletes take the showers, some of them don't.
01:48:14But there is a water spray to try and keep them cool.
01:48:17Our two athletes in second and third there,
01:48:19Abdelmaksoud and Jawid, avoided it.
01:48:21But the athlete in fourth, Blanca Guzzi,
01:48:24is trying to close the gap
01:48:26because that is the podium ahead of Blanca Guzzi,
01:48:28and she knows it.
01:48:28And that's what she's trying to close down.
01:48:30That's a battle for the silver medal position,
01:48:32you can see there.
01:48:33And number two from Egypt is Abdelmaksoud.
01:48:35And number three from Sweden is Jawid.
01:48:38And there is a significant gap now.
01:48:40We're going to get the split times very soon
01:48:42between first, second, and third.
01:48:44Song Minsung is leading.
01:48:46And Song Minsung will go into the range in first
01:48:49with an enormous lead.
01:48:52Yeah, it's almost a hundred meter lead.
01:48:54I think now Song Minsung heading into the range
01:48:58ahead of the rest of the competition.
01:49:00Second and third still very much a wide open competition.
01:49:02Let's focus on her shooting now, Song Minsung.
01:49:04One from one, it's success.
01:49:06Number two goes down,
01:49:08but she picks up for number two.
01:49:09It goes down again.
01:49:11She'll need to hit it here.
01:49:12Otherwise she will have a problem.
01:49:14She does.
01:49:14She hits two, she hits three.
01:49:16They're grouping together.
01:49:17She misses four.
01:49:18And soon the range will be congested.
01:49:21Four goes down.
01:49:22This is not the kind of range visit
01:49:24she would have wanted.
01:49:2518 seconds and out she goes, Mariam Amur.
01:49:27Yeah, who can get close to Song Minsung now?
01:49:30This is third opportunity.
01:49:31Salma Abdelmaksoud shooting brilliantly here.
01:49:33Is it going to be a sub ten?
01:49:35It's a seven second shoot from Abdelmaksoud.
01:49:37Jawid getting pulled into the battle for third now.
01:49:40I think might be out the range at the same time.
01:49:42Jawid has four, Guzi with three.
01:49:45Who's going to make it out first?
01:49:46Jawid is really struggling on her fifth shot.
01:49:4820 seconds and she's out.
01:49:49Jawid is out, but Guzi is not far.
01:49:52Kate French is catching up.
01:49:53Kim is going to get out in third position.
01:49:5611th, they come out at the same time as Guzi.
01:49:58So that's the battle for fourth position,
01:50:02I think, at this stage.
01:50:03But the leader is undoubtedly Song Minsung.
01:50:07Yeah, Song Minsung and Salma Abdelmaksoud
01:50:10way out in the lead now.
01:50:11But Song Minsung, look at that gap she has over second place.
01:50:15She needs to figure out what went wrong in that first shoot
01:50:19and really focus on it,
01:50:20or she will get dragged into this race.
01:50:22Well, Abdelmaksoud is behind her
01:50:24and the gap is being pulled out again.
01:50:26Song Minsung's run is impressive.
01:50:28It's 13 seconds.
01:50:30It was 11 at the start,
01:50:32now opens up to 13 seconds.
01:50:34Salma Abdelmaksoud really pushing here.
01:50:37Guzi in third, Guzi in fourth.
01:50:40I think she's going to overtake her now.
01:50:41Where's Azucil?
01:50:42Azucil is only five seconds off a podium.
01:50:46Keep your eyes on Azucil.
01:50:48Yeah, look at Guzi, by the way.
01:50:49I think she's about to overtake Marlena.
01:50:50Guzi, look at that gap closing down.
01:50:54Guzi is really pushing hard, digging deep here.
01:50:57She wants to get ahead in the opening stages of this race.
01:51:00That's the battle for third, incidentally,
01:51:02you see on your screens.
01:51:03That's the current battle for third
01:51:05and taking third at the moment is Blanca Guzi.
01:51:08And she's pulling away a little bit as well as Blanca Guzi.
01:51:13Don't write off Azucil though.
01:51:14Azucil's in fifth as our leader heads into the range.
01:51:19Azucil in fifth is clinging onto the pack and sees a medal.
01:51:23Yeah, can Song Minsung turn things around in the range now?
01:51:26It was 18 seconds the previous shoot.
01:51:29Comes down into the entrance of the range there.
01:51:33Two shots down for Song Minsung.
01:51:35This is looking so much better.
01:51:37I think it's going to be a sub-10 second shoot.
01:51:39She is out with eight seconds on the clock.
01:51:41That is so much better.
01:51:42She is going to be delighted with that.
01:51:44And Abdul Maksoud, who we know has shot well already
01:51:46in this event, into the range.
01:51:48She needs it to be a sub-10 to keep pace.
01:51:51Otherwise that gold medal is as good as gone.
01:51:53And look at it, 7.49.
01:51:56Anything you can do, I can do better, says the Egyptian.
01:51:59Yeah, Blanca Guzi shooting well as well.
01:52:01I think she's going to be out the range in third.
01:52:03It's going to be another sub-10 second shoot.
01:52:05These outfits are incredible.
01:52:07Who's going to be out in fourth and chasing down Blanca Guzi?
01:52:11It is Djaweed.
01:52:11Djaweed is out in 11.
01:52:12And Azuqsul struggling a little out as well.
01:52:15Comes Prokopenko in eight.
01:52:17Azuqsul gets out in 17.
01:52:19So it's Song Minsung out in first.
01:52:22Abdul Maksoud in second.
01:52:23Guzi in third.
01:52:25The battle for fourth to catch that bronze medal
01:52:28is an interesting one here, Mariam.
01:52:30Yeah, we have.
01:52:31Azuqsul is about to take that fourth position.
01:52:34I think she's moving up into fifth.
01:52:37Azuqsul, she...
01:52:38Fourth.
01:52:40She's just taking it.
01:52:41Mariam Djaweed is...
01:52:42Yeah, Mariam Djaweed and Prokopenko as well.
01:52:44Yeah, Prokopenko took fourth.
01:52:46Yeah, so first, second and third are looking solid.
01:52:50But Guzi is closing that gap down to Salman Abdul Maksoud.
01:52:53They've both dropped brilliantly.
01:52:54So it's up to the track now.
01:52:56We always say it's up to the range.
01:52:57But if they're both shooting quite well, it's all in the track.
01:53:01And Guzi, I think, has the upper hand here.
01:53:03Guzi took the shower, as our athletes are starting to do.
01:53:07Prokopenko up from tenth there.
01:53:09Prokopenko looking to close down.
01:53:11She's in fourth.
01:53:12She sees a medal ahead of her.
01:53:13Vastly experienced, Prokopenko.
01:53:15Experience at times like this comes into play.
01:53:18The heat also comes into play for the record
01:53:21as our leader closes in on the range.
01:53:24Yeah, Song Minsung.
01:53:25And that's third.
01:53:26That is third and closing in on second, by the way.
01:53:29Look at that gap.
01:53:30Abdul Maksoud.
01:53:30Closing down by the second.
01:53:31Yeah, I'll tell you what, the podium is nowhere near secure.
01:53:35Song Minsung comes in for her third trip to the range here.
01:53:39Yeah, halfway through this race now.
01:53:42Song Minsung, she can replicate that second shooting series she's done.
01:53:47I think she's on her way to gold.
01:53:49Calms down into the range.
01:53:50And that's an interesting tactic.
01:53:52She wants to make sure her heart rate is a little bit more calm heading in.
01:53:55And now shooting a lot better.
01:53:57Just misses her third there.
01:53:59Gets her third now.
01:54:00Two more shots for her.
01:54:01She is getting hounded down by these two athletes behind her.
01:54:05But it's not that bad.
01:54:05It's a 12-second shoot.
01:54:07Abdul Maksoud, if she gets out under 10,
01:54:10she might still fancy a gold medal.
01:54:12She's not going to.
01:54:13She's missed number one.
01:54:13She's missed number one second.
01:54:15Guzzi's ahead of her.
01:54:16Guzzi's three down here.
01:54:17If Guzzi gets four, she's not going to.
01:54:19She gets four.
01:54:20Abdul Maksoud is still on three.
01:54:22It's four apiece.
01:54:22Out goes Guzzi in second.
01:54:23Abdul Maksoud, three paces behind.
01:54:26Look at that turn of events.
01:54:27Guzzi in the range.
01:54:29Incredible again.
01:54:30Who would have thought that Salma Abdul Maksoud was going to miss that many shots?
01:54:33But she is feeling the pressure.
01:54:35Who is out in fourth now?
01:54:36They're all neck and neck in the range.
01:54:38Joweed is out in ninth.
01:54:39Kim is out in 11th.
01:54:41So that's fourth position.
01:54:42Nine seconds and 11 seconds gets them out.
01:54:45But that's fourth.
01:54:46I don't think fourth has got a chance of catching third here.
01:54:49Look at Rita Erdos, by the way, moving up seven places.
01:54:52She's now in sixth place.
01:54:53Could she be making a late entrance into this podium?
01:54:58But first, second and third look like they're OK for now.
01:55:02And Guzzi, second place and pulling away from Salma Abdul Maksoud.
01:55:06Getting closer to Sung.
01:55:07I think it's going to be a tough one to beat Sung at this stage.
01:55:10She is looking in fine, fine form.
01:55:1214 seconds ahead.
01:55:13One thing we know for sure, that final trip to the range is going to be a very interesting one.
01:55:19That's the visual gap then, folks.
01:55:21That angle's a beauty.
01:55:22That is second to third.
01:55:24That is silver to bronze.
01:55:25That is Guzzi to Abdul Maksoud.
01:55:28The leader at the moment is Sung Min Sung.
01:55:30And she is rounding the bend at the top of this track for the penultimate time.
01:55:35That that you see on your screen is third position for Abdul Maksoud and Egypt.
01:55:41Yeah.
01:55:43There's your second place.
01:55:45So that's a leader at the right of the bottom of your picture as a leader.
01:55:48Second place is Guzzi.
01:55:49Third place is Abdul Maksoud.
01:55:51And that's the visual gap of these athletes.
01:55:53All we need is for an athlete to miss two targets here, Maryam, in the final trip to the range.
01:55:58And we've got a race on our hands.
01:55:59And Rita Erdos, by the way, is closing down on Salma Abdul Maksoud.
01:56:03This could get risky in that last shoot.
01:56:05Can these athletes hold their own in the shooting range?
01:56:08Sung Min Sung making her way back now for the final shooting series of this world championship.
01:56:14She has looked outstanding from qualification to semifinal to final.
01:56:19Has the Korean.
01:56:21She needs to take a breath here and she needs to get it right.
01:56:23Five from five and it's hers.
01:56:24Guzzi's not a million miles away.
01:56:26It's two from two for Sung Min Sung.
01:56:28It's three from three.
01:56:29If it's four from four, it's not.
01:56:31Four gets missed, but Guzzi's shooting well.
01:56:33Four gets missed twice.
01:56:34Guzzi three from three, four from four.
01:56:36We've got a race on, folks.
01:56:37And Guzzi's out and Sung is out.
01:56:39Oh, wow, what a race we've got.
01:56:41That is gold medal that you see right in front of you, folks.
01:56:44Sung Min Sung is under pressure.
01:56:47Make no mistake.
01:56:48Abdul Maksud's out in third.
01:56:50She's not going to catch first and second.
01:56:52That is gold and silver in the world championships.
01:56:55Guzzi takes the lead for the first time in this competition.
01:57:00This is going to be an all out thrash.
01:57:02Guzzi is now digging deep, pushing hard.
01:57:04But Sung Min Sung is not leaving her side.
01:57:07This is going to be an all out battle to the finish.
01:57:08Like you said, who is who has the extra pace in the end there?
01:57:13It's a trip up from Guzzi.
01:57:15But she gets her momentum back.
01:57:18Was it the surface?
01:57:19Was it the other athlete?
01:57:20That matters not.
01:57:21They're neck and neck.
01:57:22She'll bury it.
01:57:22She'll move on.
01:57:23She'll get on with it.
01:57:24This, do not move a muscle wherever you're watching here on UIPM.
01:57:29Do not move because we have got to finish.
01:57:30Sung Min Sung makes a break.
01:57:32Guzzi says, no, you don't.
01:57:34You're not getting away that easy.
01:57:35This is going to be 100 meter dash.
01:57:37And this is going to be thrilling.
01:57:38Guzzi on the inside.
01:57:40Sung Min Sung on the outside.
01:57:41These athletes have got just about 100 meters to go.
01:57:45Sung Min Sung knows that's gold.
01:57:47Sung Min Sung checks her shoulder.
01:57:48Guzzi, can she respond?
01:57:50I don't think she's got it in her.
01:57:51I think Sung Min Sung's pulling away, stride for stride.
01:57:54Guzzi looks beaten.
01:57:56Sung Min Sung, this is an effort.
01:57:58This is incredible.
01:57:59This is athleticism of the highest order.
01:58:03To lead, to be reeled in, and to say, no, that gold medal was mine.
01:58:08That gold medal will be mine.
01:58:10And Sung Min Sung will cross the line for gold.
01:58:14Just, just crossed the line for gold.
01:58:18But just is good enough.
01:58:20She has nothing left.
01:58:22Third place, by the way.
01:58:23Third place, Abdul Maqsood.
01:58:24Is she going to hold on for third?
01:58:26Her legs are going.
01:58:27She's not going to get there.
01:58:28She falls at the line.
01:58:30She falls at the line and is taken by Erdos.
01:58:34Abdul Maqsood has fallen at the line.
01:58:36Erdos takes bronze.
01:58:39She's over the line now.
01:58:40It's the Egyptian and walking away.
01:58:43Mariam Amur, have you seen anything like it in your life?
01:58:47That's our podium.
01:58:48Hookup final 2023, Manu Chaben and Joseph Chung is the next best thing.
01:58:55Erdos, where did she find the pace in that last lap?
01:58:58Salma Abdul Maqsood, her legs were just gone, gone, gone, gone.
01:59:02What a finish by Sung Min Sung, by the way.
01:59:04Guzzi is an incredible athlete to get by.
01:59:07And the fact that she was able to do that at the end.
01:59:09She had that bit of extra pace in her.
01:59:11Missed out a couple of shots in the last shoot.
01:59:13And we have a new world champion.
01:59:16We do.
01:59:17And that world champion is Sung Min Sung.
01:59:19And she was outstanding.
01:59:23You can see our athletes have given the lot.
01:59:25We'll bring you a classified result in a few moments time.
01:59:28Some of our athletes still crossing the line.
01:59:31And crossing the line incredibly.
01:59:33They've put everything in out there.
01:59:35It's so, so hot.
01:59:36Look at Michelle Guglielmo, by the way,
01:59:38finishing up in 15th after starting in 18th.
01:59:41She's really pushed hard.
01:59:42She's taking this competition as an opportunity
01:59:45to not only train, but be in that environment
01:59:48that she will be, yeah, in the Olympics.
01:59:50Well done from 18th and elimination in the riding
01:59:53to finish in 15th.
01:59:54Sung Min Sung was outrageously good.
01:59:59She's something else.
02:00:01Wow.
02:00:01Look at that.
02:00:02She's getting help and assistance to get some water
02:00:06and get some hydration.
02:00:07She's got nothing.
02:00:08She's got nothing.
02:00:09She put everything in.
02:00:11Not even sure she's got an ability to hug anybody.
02:00:14I've never seen anything like that.
02:00:15Sung Min Sung, by the way,
02:00:17was already qualified to the Olympics,
02:00:19but this is automatic qualification for her.
02:00:21So that just solidifies her position.
02:00:23And I think scares the rest of the athletes in pack
02:00:26who will be making it to the Olympics
02:00:28because Sung Min Sung has been outstanding.
02:00:31She's been shining this entire competition.
02:00:33She has been shining this entire season.
02:00:36What a race and what a competition
02:00:38for our world champion.
02:00:40But the impressive part of it for me was Guzi said,
02:00:42mine.
02:00:43Sung said, no, no, no, no, no.
02:00:45I'm backing myself here.
02:00:46And that was a finish.
02:00:48So Wendell finishes on third place.
02:00:50Erdos taking third.
02:00:52Salma Abdel-Maksoud because she,
02:00:55and I could see it five paces before you could see it.
02:00:58Her legs are gone.
02:00:59She was on the verge of the deck.
02:01:02That was it.
02:01:02That was, there were no calories left.
02:01:04The fire's gone out.
02:01:05That's it.
02:01:05It's not, there's no, there's no guts.
02:01:07There's no determination.
02:01:08There's no try harder.
02:01:09Her body was done.
02:01:10Her muscle breakdown was intense to watch.
02:01:14I call that almost rhabdomyolysis.
02:01:17When muscles, the fatigue sets in more
02:01:20than the body can handle.
02:01:21And then the muscles start to be broken down for energy,
02:01:24which is not what you want when you're an athlete
02:01:26racing at this high level.
02:01:27And she knew it as well.
02:01:28She knew that bronze was there.
02:01:30It was behind her.
02:01:31There was a trip as well for Guzi.
02:01:33We'll see that in the final lap.
02:01:34But there is your world champion.
02:01:36That's Sung Min Sung with a gold medal.
02:01:39And after her shooting in the race,
02:01:40they came out in the final lap together, Mariam Amur.
02:01:44Yeah, to have that, I don't know,
02:01:47being against Guzi in general is scary
02:01:50because she has a very strong name
02:01:52when it comes to laser and all the athletes know that.
02:01:55So the fact that Sung Min Sung did not give up
02:01:57at any stage in the race
02:01:59and found that extra pace at the end, finished in first.
02:02:02I think that is more of a mental thing.
02:02:05Just finished in first, by the way.
02:02:07Just finished.
02:02:07Yeah, Guzi was making a break for it.
02:02:08But I'm looking forward to seeing the tape be taken
02:02:11because we'll see that again.
02:02:12I think we will.
02:02:13She, again, like Abdullah Maksoud, she was spent.
02:02:15Yeah.
02:02:16First, second, and third were dramatic finishes, to be honest.
02:02:18And that's what we want.
02:02:20That is what we want.
02:02:21They came out of the range very close together.
02:02:24But your gold medalist, Sung Min Sung.
02:02:27And this, I think, is this a final trip to the range?
02:02:29Seen a replay of?
02:02:30I think it might well be.
02:02:31And you'll see them come out of the range together.
02:02:34And this was the race that we were hoping for.
02:02:36The athletes won't thank me for that
02:02:37because they've just spent everything they've got in their body.
02:02:40That's look at first and second.
02:02:42That's a clock on that.
02:02:44And that is equal.
02:02:44And it was a trip by, accidental trip.
02:02:46She apologized in fairness.
02:02:47She tried to grab her.
02:02:48God bless her.
02:02:49Sung Min Sung tried to catch her and grab her and apologize.
02:02:52And Guzi takes the lead.
02:02:53This is the most impressive part for me.
02:02:55They were switching.
02:02:56They were.
02:02:56Guzi takes it.
02:02:57And if you've led from the front and you're caught
02:02:59and somebody overtakes you,
02:03:00the psychological advantage is with Guzi.
02:03:03But Sung Min Sung, look there.
02:03:04Those last three steps.
02:03:05I'll tell you what.
02:03:06That was risky.
02:03:07That was risky.
02:03:08I don't think it was intentional.
02:03:09No, I don't think it was.
02:03:10But I think she was done.
02:03:12Yeah, fatigue just sets in.
02:03:13And then that look at third.
02:03:15Oh, Abdul Maksoud.
02:03:16God bless her.
02:03:17Actually, that's a pretty strong fall.
02:03:19We want to make sure she's OK.
02:03:20Yeah.
02:03:20But she came.
02:03:21She stood up.
02:03:22She came in fourth.
02:03:23But you could see there's no more energy.
02:03:26Her body was done.
02:03:28She was done.
02:03:28She was finished.
02:03:30And she just hits her head on the floor.
02:03:34She picked herself up.
02:03:35And she got across the line a little.
02:03:38That's a world championship medal gondola.
02:03:40Smile, yeah.
02:03:41And that's going to hurt.
02:03:42It is going to hurt.
02:03:43But Sung Min Sung was outrageously good.
02:03:48You guys, Rita Erdos.
02:03:51Yes.
02:03:52Rita Erdos started in 13th.
02:03:54Finished in third.
02:03:5510 places she made up.
02:03:57A minute and nine.
02:03:58A minute and nine she made up.
02:03:59Look at that.
02:04:0010 places.
02:04:01Blanca Guzzi as well.
02:04:02Blanca Guzzi was insane.
02:04:03You could see the second separating her and Sung.
02:04:05But Rita Erdos was just, I think, the story of the day for me.
02:04:10First and second was an incredible battle.
02:04:12But Rita Erdos coming out of nowhere in that last lap.
02:04:15Yeah, totally blindsided Sung as well.
02:04:17Two Hungarians on the podium then for the women's final.
02:04:21And it was an epic.
02:04:23It was epic.
02:04:24It was epic.
02:04:26We are hopefully in the next minute or two,
02:04:29or maybe even less, going to get some reaction trackside.
02:04:32James Zanderdijk is his trackside.
02:04:38Well, Rita, one of the most famous pentathlon,
02:04:42not just world championship, but finals of all time.
02:04:45You managed somehow to start in 13th place and finish in third.
02:04:49Talk to us about the end of that race,
02:04:51because you carried on right until the end.
02:04:55I don't know what to say about it.
02:05:24I plan just to focus on myself and did my best.
02:05:30And I will see what will happen.
02:05:39I know that you won't know the answer to this.
02:05:42I can see you're very emotional.
02:05:43But this, at the very least, gives you a chance
02:05:46for qualification to the Olympic Games.
02:05:48Talk to us about what those emotions mean.
02:05:50I hope that I make it with this achievement.
02:05:55But really, I don't know yet.
02:05:58So it's up to you.
02:06:00And just a word in Hungarian for your friends and family,
02:06:03who are going to be in absolute tears,
02:06:04I'm sure, after watching that.
02:06:20Rita, well done, congratulations.
02:06:38Bronze medal at the World Championship, well done.
02:06:40Thank you so much.
02:06:41Krissi, well done.
02:06:42Amazing, really.
02:06:43Well done to Rita Erdős.
02:06:45Incidentally, that was her first individual World Championship final.
02:06:49Bronze in the Laser Run in Dublin in 2018.
02:06:51Laser Run to Modern Pentathlon World, final bronze medal.
02:06:55Yeah, that transition is insane.
02:06:57And she hasn't really competed this season.
02:06:59It was Blanket Guzi, Blanket Bauer and Michelle Gulyás,
02:07:02who we saw consistently in the finals.
02:07:04And Rita making a break out of nowhere.
02:07:06You can see the pure and raw emotions in that interview.
02:07:09So much just means to her.
02:07:12James's track side with our silver medalist, James.
02:07:17I'm lost for words.
02:07:18Really, I am, Blanka.
02:07:20You never cease to amaze me.
02:07:21You've picked up two gold medals at World Cups now.
02:07:23And now it's the silver at the World Championship.
02:07:26So nearly a gold, by the way.
02:07:28Like I'm talking, we're talking seconds here.
02:07:30Talk to us about that race, because that was phenomenal to watch.
02:07:32What was it like to take part in?
02:07:34Yes, I'm not disappointed because of the finish,
02:07:37because I think I was in a lack of energy, a lack of power.
02:07:41But my heart told me that go Blanka.
02:07:45You have to do it and you will do it.
02:07:48I mean the quota place, not the gold this time.
02:07:52But yes, I lost also the words
02:07:55because I felt something special before the competition
02:08:01and before the day in the morning.
02:08:04And I could say that I had a strong belief in myself.
02:08:14And yes, it was my dream.
02:08:18And it came true.
02:08:19Predicting the future as well as running phenomenal races.
02:08:24I guess probably now this secures your spot at the Olympic Games.
02:08:28Not really that it seemed in doubt,
02:08:29given the amazing couple of years you've had.
02:08:31But a silver at World Championships
02:08:33surely now means we'll be seeing you at the Paris Olympic Games.
02:08:36Yes, it was the main thing of this day to secure my place.
02:08:43And I could do it.
02:08:45So it was the main task.
02:08:50I know you've got a huge contingent of friends and family back in Hungary.
02:08:54Pentathlon a huge sport back in your home country of Hungary.
02:08:57So please a message in Hungarian for all those many fans.
02:09:16Next up, Paris, we'll see you there.
02:09:33Incredible from another one of the Hungarians on the podium.
02:09:37Yeah, Guzi.
02:09:38Blanka Guzi was class.
02:09:40And she said, Mariam, my energy had gone, but my heart got me there.
02:09:44Yeah, again, that goes to show just how much you're driving.
02:09:47And there's so much apart from the physical aspect that can drive you forward,
02:09:52move you forward and really give you that push at the end.
02:09:55There's there's the hunger for winning.
02:09:59But let's throw to James for the winner interview.
02:10:04So I'm in an incredible year
02:10:06that has now been rounded off in the most incredible way.
02:10:10A gold medal at the World Championships before the Olympic Games.
02:10:15Firstly, just describe to us how amazing that must feel right now.
02:10:40And then and three times is the World Championship.
02:10:47And and the first time is the individual.
02:10:49So it's a gold medal.
02:10:51So it's a very, very happy.
02:10:52And in my in my pride party.
02:10:57Yeah, yeah.
02:10:58And then so is a very happy and I can is a happy together episode.
02:11:02Is that I can come back to Korea so I can prepare to the Olympic Games.
02:11:06Very, very happy.
02:11:08Talk to us about the final lap of that race,
02:11:10because Blanca Guzzi, we know how fast she is.
02:11:14She came back strong, but you still managed to stay ahead.
02:11:16How did you do this?
02:11:38And she was a very great racer and runner.
02:11:48But he is strong.
02:11:49But I think before the racer run,
02:11:54so I think Guzzi is if Guzzi is together competing,
02:11:59so I can do this thing.
02:12:01And then last lap is Guzzi together running.
02:12:07So Guzzi is a little bit is tired.
02:12:10So is I can do it is so I don't know that it's a power.
02:12:14So it's the last.
02:12:17It's the finish is a very strong speed.
02:12:21OK, so well, listen, someone you're going to get ready for the podium now.
02:12:24So we'll let you go.
02:12:25But thank you so much.
02:12:25And congratulations.
02:12:26Well done again.
02:12:27Thank you so much.
02:12:28Well done.
02:12:29Thank you.
02:12:30That is your world champion gold medalist from Korea.
02:12:34Song Minseong.
02:12:36And there is the classified results.
02:12:38Guzzi, silver, Erdos with bronze and bitterly disappointed.
02:12:43Abdullah Maksoud.
02:12:44By the way, I'm going to give Abdullah Maksoud for picking herself up
02:12:46and get it over the line in full still,
02:12:48because that would have been easy to have stayed there.
02:12:51Don't finish.
02:12:52She somehow got over the line.
02:12:53Yeah, that was, I think, pretty tough to watch.
02:12:56And for her, pretty tough to experience.
02:12:58And yeah, but congratulations to all the athletes who have made it to the finals.
02:13:04And let's take a look then, shall we?
02:13:07At our gold medalist Song Minseong's road to the top.
02:13:34Go.
02:14:34So
02:15:04so
02:15:34so
02:16:04so
02:16:14so they are your medalists over the line, gold,
02:16:18silver and bronze in the Women's World Championship final here in Zhengzhou in China.
02:16:23We will take the medal ceremony.
02:16:25We will stand and observe the Korean national anthem, of course, here in the stadium.
02:16:31But Mariam, just sum up the final for us.
02:16:35Something about before we sum up the finals.
02:16:37I just feel like it's an incredible honor to be able to witness history unfold right
02:16:42before our eyes.
02:16:43Song Minseong, I think, is going to be an incredible career and story in modern pentathlon.
02:16:49And this is this is just a start for her.
02:16:52And I think what we witnessed today is greatness.
02:16:55And the Korean athlete had that drive, had that.
02:16:59I don't know where she got that motivation from in the last lap.
02:17:01She she really pushed through this and was almost going to lose that gold medal, but
02:17:06very well deserved from her, as is Guzi and Rita Erdos, who came essentially out of nowhere.
02:17:14Summing up the finals, summing up the finals, the elimination in the riding, I think, opened
02:17:24up the competition a bit with Guliash being out of the running.
02:17:26But it's a good thing that she did continue on.
02:17:29Song Minseong, solid consistency from the get go qualifications, semifinals and finals.
02:17:35And that's what you need to be a champion.
02:17:41Guzi, look at that shooting that she's had the entire competition.
02:17:45Consistency as well.
02:17:47Incredible in the running track.
02:17:49And yeah, she she she set herself up to succeed with a good fencing ranking out.
02:17:55I think this is one of her best fences ever in a competition.
02:17:59And so congratulations to her.
02:18:01Rita Erdos, again, coming out of nowhere.
02:18:03She had a very mid competition and then Laserun went all out and, yeah, snagged that bronze
02:18:09from Salma Abdel Masoud.
02:18:10But yeah, we have to give Salma some credit.
02:18:14She was going to be our bronze medalist until the end there and just gave everything in
02:18:18that last lap.
02:18:19But it was Rita Erdos in the end.
02:18:22A reminder that following the medal ceremonies, you will be able to see some beautiful photos
02:18:28on UIPM's Instagram page and social media page.
02:18:35She's the first non-European to win the world championship.
02:18:41Song Minseong, yeah.
02:18:44First non-European ever to win the world championship.
02:18:47Interesting.
02:18:48See, I told you, history, history unfolding.
02:18:50And you mentioned about dominance as well, going into the Olympic Games.
02:18:53Everybody now is going to be looking at Song Minseong.
02:18:55And just to go back to her performance as well, a few things impressed me, like the
02:18:59run we'll come back to.
02:19:02Her first shoot was bad.
02:19:05For her, it was 18 seconds, but she's buried it.
02:19:08Mentally, she's not come back and thought, and you were saying, going in quite rightly,
02:19:12going into the range second time, is it going to play in her mind?
02:19:1510 seconds, no, bang, out.
02:19:16And the second, third one was eight odd seconds.
02:19:18That's really impressive mental game, Marion.
02:19:20Talk to us about that.
02:19:21Definitely a mental game.
02:19:22But also, she kind of pinned out what was wrong in the rest of the shooting series.
02:19:30She took her time, taking her time into the range, shook her hands out and arms out and
02:19:37make sure that there was no lactic acid going into the shoot.
02:19:40And yeah, turned things around pretty quickly.
02:19:43It's all about that active thinking on your feet, your intuition and seeing what do I
02:19:50have to do now to make this better for myself and put myself in the best position possible.
02:19:55And she did brilliantly well.
02:19:56She did, yeah.
02:19:57Rita Erdos as well.
02:20:00Her first World Championship final.
02:20:05This is difficult for the Hungarian team, by the way.
02:20:07She's 21.
02:20:08She is 21, yeah.
02:20:09Song Minseong is 21 as well.
02:20:11Correct.
02:20:12Last month, just 21.
02:20:14Yeah.
02:20:14What a way to celebrate your 21st birthday.
02:20:16Yeah.
02:20:16And year with a World Championship gold.
02:20:19Yeah, just as a notice, the Hungarian team have a very tough call on their end.
02:20:25They have Michelle Gugliaschi, they have Blanka Guzzi and now Rita Erdos, who literally came
02:20:30out of nowhere.
02:20:30It was Blanka Bauer until one competition ago and now it's Rita Erdos in the mix.
02:20:34So who will be going to the Olympics?
02:20:37No one knows.
02:20:39And a mention for Michelle Gugliaschi, starting in 18th because of the elimination in the
02:20:45riding, but finished 15th, I think.
02:20:48Just in the run.
02:20:48Yeah, just in the run.
02:20:49Did really well.
02:20:50Deserves a mention.
02:20:52Of course, yeah.
02:20:53Michelle Gugliaschi is, again, one of those athletes that alongside Corenza Breslin and
02:20:59now Song Minseong, I think, have a chance of podium finishes in the Olympic Games.
02:21:05And yeah, I don't think she was going to let go of this competition.
02:21:09She still has the internal battle with the Hungarians.
02:21:11She needed to put in a good time with the running and laser shooting in general, as
02:21:15well as the swim.
02:21:16We saw a 2.09 from her after that disappointing ride.
02:21:21And that's the mentality of a champion, never giving up until the last second, even though
02:21:25you're out of the running.
02:21:27That's just what you have to do.
02:21:28That the voice of Mariam Amur, former athlete, elite athlete in the modern pentathlon, now
02:21:36alongside me in the commentary box for the medal ceremony.
02:21:39And we are going to very soon have the medal ceremony here in Zhengzhou in China.
02:21:47And our athletes will probably still be puffing and panting and getting oxygen in them.
02:21:52Don't be surprised if you see some refreshments and water still going in, as our individual
02:22:03athletes are welcome to the stage, welcome to the podium.
02:22:07And the dignitaries will ensure that the medals are handed out in due course.
02:22:11The bronze, silver and gold here in Zhengzhou.
02:22:14The athletes have not only overcome each other, but also the conditions.
02:22:21Presenters and dignitaries are being given the entry onto the stage quite rightly.
02:22:34But our athletes already in their tracksuits, already ready, already maybe had five minutes
02:22:40on the foam roller.
02:22:41I would suggest it's probably been water, electrolytes and any food they can get in
02:22:47them.
02:22:47Because now is actually a really important time.
02:22:48The first 90 minutes when you finish is when that sponge needs food quick.
02:22:53Yeah, that's an interesting point, because now they're being crowned as gold, silver
02:22:57and bronze medalists at the World Championships.
02:22:59But now they have to look over to the Olympics because their season is not done.
02:23:02Usually this is where the season ends.
02:23:04And now they have to celebrate for like an hour, two hours and then crack on.
02:23:08Because what they do for the next day is important.
02:23:10Some of them are going to have flights, might not be here for the mixed relays.
02:23:13So those flights are big on their legs.
02:23:16Let's celebrate and enjoy their World Championship medals thus far then, shall we?
02:23:20And there were some incredible performances here.
02:23:23Onto the podium for a bronze medal.
02:23:28An incredible effort.
02:23:29Rita Erdos takes to the third place.
02:23:32And look at that celebration, Mariam.
02:23:34She's overjoyed.
02:23:35Yeah, I think this is a very emotional moment for Rita Erdos.
02:23:40This is her first time on a podium in senior level and did that at the World Championships.
02:23:46So what a better way to kind of get your first medal in the senior scene.
02:23:51That will be a medal that she cherishes for a long, long time.
02:23:55That's for sure.
02:23:56That's going to be on display in the living room.
02:24:01Yeah, it will.
02:24:02Pride of Paris.
02:24:03And our dignitaries are awarding the, I think, mascots.
02:24:14Look at those doors, I want one.
02:24:15Well, they're lucky to have these, quite frankly,
02:24:17because Mariam and I have had to walk past them for the last few days.
02:24:23Nearly gone.
02:24:24But there they are.
02:24:27Little mascot, the medal and certification of their entry.
02:24:33And performance.
02:24:35Talking about wonderful performances.
02:24:38Hungary with two places, Blanka Guzzi and silver medal.
02:24:44A thank to the heavens from Blanka Guzzi.
02:24:47And it was almost gold.
02:24:50So close to being gold, but there was just a second or so in it for Blanka Guzzi.
02:24:57She will take silver.
02:24:58She told James Anderdakis trackside afterwards,
02:25:01I will take silver.
02:25:02Gave it my all.
02:25:03She gave it everything.
02:25:04She survived the trip.
02:25:06In the final lap, did Blanka Guzzi.
02:25:08And that was an incredible performance from the Hungarian.
02:25:12She takes the silver medal.
02:25:19Mascot will be delivered as well.
02:25:24The formalities of a medal ceremony.
02:25:30And they all look relatively composed on the podium, I've got to say.
02:25:35There won't have been a calorie in their body left.
02:25:40That excitement, I think, is taking over now.
02:25:45Leaving the gold medalist.
02:25:47And what a performance it was.
02:25:50She looked head and shoulders in her semifinal above everybody else.
02:25:53She was leading in the final.
02:25:54She had to come from behind in the last 200 meters.
02:25:59Sung Min Sung with a gold medal here at the World Championships 2024.
02:26:05She turned fourth at the World Cup final in Ankara a month ago.
02:26:09And the disappointment of being off of the podium in fourth into gold
02:26:13here for the Korean and Sung Min Sung.
02:26:17Chain reaction.
02:26:19Domino effect.
02:26:21Didn't get that medal she won in the World Cup final,
02:26:23but turned things pretty quickly around.
02:26:26I think this is a much more...
02:26:33impactful medal and a strong statement to the rest of the athletes.
02:26:37We'll be joining her at the Olympic Games.
02:26:39And it's the manner with which she did it for me as well.
02:26:41She looked so consistent, as Mariam rightly said.
02:26:44Consistent throughout, but heart and desire.
02:26:47An 18 second shoot, she recovered.
02:26:49Overtaken on the last lap, she recovered.
02:26:51She is a hell of an athlete.
02:26:52And she's going to be a formidable force in the Olympic Games
02:26:55in a couple of months' time.
02:26:56Sung Min Sung is your World Championship gold medalist here in Zhengzhou.
02:27:00We will stand and observe the Korean national anthem.
02:27:55So the Korean national anthem impeccably observed for the gold medalist,
02:28:18who is Sung Min Sung, the world champion with the gold medal around her neck.
02:28:23And my favorite podium moment, where they're all invited onto the top.
02:28:27They all share an embrace.
02:28:29And what a picture that'll be.
02:28:31Yeah, they shared.
02:28:32Yeah, sharing this incredible moment together,
02:28:35I think brings them closer as athletes and as friends,
02:28:37even though they might not have been before this podium.
02:28:40But they've, again, shared that experience together and that win together.
02:28:44And the feeling of being up on the podium in front of such an incredible crowd
02:28:49and in this humongous and great competition we've had in Zhengzhou.
02:28:56You know, one thing as well that stands out to me from Sung Min Sung as well,
02:29:02when the trip happened on the back straight,
02:29:04she tried to catch her and she apologized mid,
02:29:07am I going to win gold, am I going to win silver?
02:29:10Outstanding.
02:29:11So huge credit to our athletes.
02:29:13There they are.
02:29:13They are your bronze, silver and gold medalists.
02:29:15We are not done yet.
02:29:17You thought that was exciting.
02:29:19You thought that was going to be interesting.
02:29:23Final and final lap.
02:29:25You ain't seen nothing yet.
02:29:26We will be back this afternoon for the men's final.
02:29:29That's the women's final complete.
