00:00 Good news! The Department of Labor and Employment has started the consultation with various labor groups
00:05 as well as the possible increase in wages for workers in Metro Manila.
00:09 This is a violation of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s order to increase the wage rates of workers.
00:16 Kenneth Paciente with the report. Rise and shine, Kenneth.
00:19 Laika has been working as a cashier in an establishment for three months.
00:26 Although she is grateful for her job, she admits that her salary is not enough as a minimum wage earner here in NCR.
00:35 I am also working hard. I am sending money to my family.
00:40 It's also because I love to buy. I have to eat everyday.
00:47 That is why Laika's colleagues are asking for an increase in the salary of those earning minimum wage.
00:53 It's increasing, sir. Because of the prices now, it's increasing.
00:59 The workers are now asking for an increase in salary from the government.
01:03 In fact, the Labor Department has started the consultation with various labor groups
01:09 to discuss the possible increase in wages in Metro Manila.
01:13 This is also in accordance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive
01:17 to increase the wage rates of workers.
01:20 We are reviewing now the socioeconomic conditions in the region as well as the inputs of the labor sector.
01:27 Our mandate is to review if we need to adjust the minimum wage in the National Capital Region.
01:41 So we will have to balance the interest of both the labor and the employer sector.
01:48 Along with the consultation of NEDA and DTI,
01:51 the labor groups also had the opportunity to present their opinions and comments,
01:56 even though their position paper will be the guide of the authorities
02:00 in deciding on the minimum wage adjustment.
02:03 We are mindful of the directive of our President.
02:08 That's why as early as now, last week, it was already 60 days.
02:14 We will listen to all sectors in this discussion.
02:23 After the consultation, it will be followed by a meeting with the sector of employers on June 4
02:29 and there will be a public hearing on June 20.
02:32 In the beginning of the DOLE, the NCR Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board will hold the wage deliberation.
02:39 We will be fair and we will listen to all the opinions of both the labor and employer
02:48 as well as the other sectors that can help us to arrive at a very fair wage determination.
03:03 As of now, the minimum wage in the NCR is P610.
03:07 It is not yet determined how much the possible increase in the wage will be.
03:12 Kenneth Paciente for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
