00:02 - Hello, I'm Libby Trickett,
00:05 and I am a former Olympic swimmer,
00:07 and I have always been really passionate
00:10 about promoting better body image in sport,
00:12 which is why I am so pleased to be here
00:14 to share the Activate Masterclass.
00:16 This short video is your practical guide
00:18 for parents, coaches, and club administrators
00:21 to support you in creating a positive club culture
00:25 that helps young people to feel comfortable
00:27 and confident in their bodies,
00:29 so that they can keep being active
00:30 and playing sport for longer.
00:32 Recent research has uncovered some worrying statistics
00:35 when it comes to young people and sport.
00:38 61% of girls reported feeling judged
00:41 as a significant barrier to engaging in sport
00:44 and physical activity.
00:46 On average, more than half of young people surveyed
00:49 said they don't like others watching them
00:50 while playing sport,
00:52 and more than half of boys and a third of girls
00:54 report being called names in relation to their size
00:57 and weight by their peers.
00:59 For me, I know from experience that from a young age,
01:02 it felt like if you're playing sport,
01:04 people feel entitled to talk about your body.
01:06 Over my career, I experienced countless times
01:09 when my body was the topic of conversation,
01:12 but I wasn't a part of it.
01:13 I've been called too fat, too thin, too fit, too muscly,
01:18 all while performing at my physical peak.
01:21 But this is not an experience
01:22 that is unique to professional athletes.
01:25 It's something that starts at the very beginning.
01:28 I've had conversations with so many young people
01:31 who've wanted to give up the sport they love
01:33 all because of the pressure they feel about their appearance.
01:36 And that's why a team of experts
01:38 from the Embrace Collective have created this video
01:40 to incorporate four easy, and I promise that they're easy,
01:44 actions that will make a real difference
01:46 to your club and the people in it.
01:48 There is no judgment here.
01:50 It's just about rethinking some common approaches
01:53 and doing our best to build a positive club culture
01:56 so that we can keep our young people
01:58 playing sport for longer.
02:00 So let's get into it.
