00:00David, Man City have won the title, obviously, could you just, as a manager, sum up how difficult

00:12it is to play?

00:15Well everybody who's watched Man City over the years would tell you how well they've

00:20done.

00:21But if I explain that better, I was just saying earlier, you used to win the Premier League

00:27and meanwhile the other teams were preparing to try and catch you the next season.

00:32This guy's just gone and won it four years in a row, so that myth about the Premier League,

00:36you know, you can't win it back to back, he's certainly blown it sky high.

00:41I don't think any has wanted that because I think it was a case of, you know, even my

00:46period when I went to United, you know, Man United had just won the league and then what

00:50you found is all the other teams were strengthening, including Man City, including Liverpool and

00:56Chelsea's at all the time, he's just continued to keep strengthening this football club.

01:04I think everybody in football is in awe, and I was going to say about his coaching, I think

01:13there's a bit more, I think I'm nearly looking at him and saying, what a really, really good

01:16man manager this guy must be, he must be, to control the players he's got, either that

01:23or he's got some hair dryer in the background there which nobody's talked about, because

01:30he looks as if he's got them on a string here, those players know their jobs, they won't

01:35step out of place, why would you in any way challenge it?

01:39So I have to say probably at the moment everybody's in awe about his football, but his ability

01:44to manage, you know, and obviously have to manage you boys as well and all the other

01:50things that come from being at a big club, he's done amazing.

01:53As someone who's managed years, you've got vast experience, you understand European football,

02:01is he the hardest manager to put a team against, or is he the standard bearer for everybody else?

02:11I mean it's really difficult to work it out, because if you gave Pep the West Ham job,

02:18with the players you've got, then you'd be saying, come on then, let's see what you can do.

02:22But what he's shown is he can do it with, it looks as if he could do it with MD, wouldn't

02:27matter what team he's got, but I'm not saying he's going to win the league with any team,

02:30but I generally feel that he's got really good players and you have to say he's got

02:35huge backing, he's got brilliant support from aboard here, they've never ever done anything

02:43but back Pep in every way they possibly can.

02:46So you have to say that he's probably in the perfect storm, if you want to call it that,

02:52because he's in with people who are really supportive of him, and rightly so because

02:57of how he does as well.

02:58You say he's got a ranking history of all the greats, is that it?

03:05You know, you get asked this an awful lot about players and you say where would they

03:10be and it's quite difficult to say where you would put them.

03:14Most of the time I was bringing up it was Sir Alex's team at United, you were saying

03:18oh my goodness, how are we going to get a result there with Giggsie and Beckham and

03:23whoever were on the team at different times.

03:26But I think Man City have come through now and really made it difficult.

03:31But I said earlier, and I want to say it to you just in case I forget to say this, I think

03:35huge credit has to go to Mickey Arteta for the job they've done at Arsenal.

03:39How hard they've pushed Man City right for every inch of the way.

03:44They've done an incredible job at Arsenal as well and have been really the main challengers,

03:48I have to say Liverpool were as well for most of the season, but certainly I have to give

03:53a lot of credit to Mickey Arteta and what they've done at Arsenal.

03:56262 games, three top half finishers, imagine you would be in charge of it, two or three

04:02generations of West Ham fans seeing something they've never seen before.

04:06What is your own emotion as a fan of West Ham?

04:09I think it's nice when somebody says it to you, because I've been the one who feel as

04:13if I'm having to say it to make people realise that hey we've done not bad actually.

04:17But when somebody else tells you it makes you go, oh that's bringing a tear to my glass

04:22eye a wee bit there, you know what I mean.

04:25But generally I've got to say that it is, and quite often this year I've had to nearly

04:31say it to justify it.

04:33And I think when you look back I hope you'd say, by the way you don't need to justify

04:37anything with the results West Ham have had over the last three or four years.

04:41Because if you're journalists who watch and listen and look, you will probably see West

04:49Ham have not been in this position that often over the years.

04:51They really haven't been.

04:53There's debate in some ways, he's a legend, he's not a legend, what do you think going

04:57out on the block?

04:58Many West Ham fans think you are a legend.

05:00Others say maybe not, but what do you think?

05:04Well the ones who say I'm a like and the ones who say I don't.

05:09And you know it was amazing last week, there's been a lot of criticism but I've got to say

05:14the whole of the London stadium stood and applauded.

05:17Not just me, the players as well last home game.

05:20I think generally if you're a West Ham supporter, I mean now let me turn it round another way.

05:26If you were a supporter of another club in the Premier League and you're asked how do

05:30you think West Ham are doing?

05:32If you asked Tottenham supporters or you asked Everton supporters or whatever you want to

05:37ask, I think many of them would turn around and say hey by the way West Ham are doing

05:41well.

05:42Other teams haven't had our success.

05:44So legend, I don't know if I particularly like that word, but I hope that looking back

05:52folk would say progress at West Ham has been made by the manager.

05:57Stepping them up, not being a relegation team, not even, well last year we had a bit of difficulties

06:03but in the main we were fine.

06:07Sold a record breaking British player.

06:12And I saw one before as well from Everton.

06:15So I'm fortunate enough, sometimes as a manager you need to be lucky.

06:21You need good players.

06:22I'm lucky I've had people, some good players but I think Pep's got really good players.

06:29Really it's more about Pep today and Man City really is because they've been outstanding.

06:34Last one.

06:35Pep made the point on Friday that his first game in English football was against you here

06:39and it sort of brought the whole thing full circle in a way.

06:42He's obviously got fond memories of going against you.

06:44He seems to think you want to retire and you'll be back.

06:47Has he got that right?

06:50Do you want to take him on again?

06:52Flipping heck, do I want to take him on?

06:54I'm waiting till he goes before I come back.

06:58Look, I have to say that I've got some things come to me already

07:05but probably not going to make me move at the moment.

07:08I want to have a break.

07:09I want to enjoy some time with family.

07:11I mean we had three weeks off and it sounds, no.

07:14Ours is a privileged job at times but we had three weeks off.

07:18We finished on June the 7th.

07:20We were in London for a couple of days after.

07:21We were back on the 1st of July to go to Australia.

07:25It was incredibly short.

07:27We'd come through the COVID time as well and all the games and different things.

07:31So it's been a really manic, and actually if you get a chance,

07:35if you look at the amount of games we've played in the last four years,

07:38I think there might only be Man City, possibly Liverpool,

07:42played the same amount of games as us.

07:44And you might say, well what does that mean?

07:46It probably means you've been successful in some way.

07:49For the club it probably means they're taking in more money

07:51than they've probably ever done as well.

07:54But for the managers and the players it means it's been pretty hard going.
