David, Man City have won the title, obviously, could you just, as a manager, sum up how difficult
00:12
it is to play?
00:15
Well everybody who's watched Man City over the years would tell you how well they've
00:20
done.
00:21
But if I explain that better, I was just saying earlier, you used to win the Premier League
00:27
and meanwhile the other teams were preparing to try and catch you the next season.
00:32
This guy's just gone and won it four years in a row, so that myth about the Premier League,
00:36
you know, you can't win it back to back, he's certainly blown it sky high.
00:41
I don't think any has wanted that because I think it was a case of, you know, even my
00:46
period when I went to United, you know, Man United had just won the league and then what
00:50
you found is all the other teams were strengthening, including Man City, including Liverpool and
00:56
Chelsea's at all the time, he's just continued to keep strengthening this football club.
01:04
I think everybody in football is in awe, and I was going to say about his coaching, I think
01:13
there's a bit more, I think I'm nearly looking at him and saying, what a really, really good
01:16
man manager this guy must be, he must be, to control the players he's got, either that
01:23
or he's got some hair dryer in the background there which nobody's talked about, because
01:30
he looks as if he's got them on a string here, those players know their jobs, they won't
01:35
step out of place, why would you in any way challenge it?
01:39
So I have to say probably at the moment everybody's in awe about his football, but his ability
01:44
to manage, you know, and obviously have to manage you boys as well and all the other
01:50
things that come from being at a big club, he's done amazing.
01:53
As someone who's managed years, you've got vast experience, you understand European football,
02:01
is he the hardest manager to put a team against, or is he the standard bearer for everybody else?
02:11
I mean it's really difficult to work it out, because if you gave Pep the West Ham job,
02:18
with the players you've got, then you'd be saying, come on then, let's see what you can do.
02:22
But what he's shown is he can do it with, it looks as if he could do it with MD, wouldn't
02:27
matter what team he's got, but I'm not saying he's going to win the league with any team,
02:30
but I generally feel that he's got really good players and you have to say he's got
02:35
huge backing, he's got brilliant support from aboard here, they've never ever done anything
02:43
but back Pep in every way they possibly can.
02:46
So you have to say that he's probably in the perfect storm, if you want to call it that,
02:52
because he's in with people who are really supportive of him, and rightly so because
02:57
of how he does as well.
02:58
You say he's got a ranking history of all the greats, is that it?
03:05
You know, you get asked this an awful lot about players and you say where would they
03:10
be and it's quite difficult to say where you would put them.
03:14
Most of the time I was bringing up it was Sir Alex's team at United, you were saying
03:18
oh my goodness, how are we going to get a result there with Giggsie and Beckham and
03:23
whoever were on the team at different times.
03:26
But I think Man City have come through now and really made it difficult.
03:31
But I said earlier, and I want to say it to you just in case I forget to say this, I think
03:35
huge credit has to go to Mickey Arteta for the job they've done at Arsenal.
03:39
How hard they've pushed Man City right for every inch of the way.
03:44
They've done an incredible job at Arsenal as well and have been really the main challengers,
03:48
I have to say Liverpool were as well for most of the season, but certainly I have to give
03:53
a lot of credit to Mickey Arteta and what they've done at Arsenal.
03:56
262 games, three top half finishers, imagine you would be in charge of it, two or three
04:02
generations of West Ham fans seeing something they've never seen before.
04:06
What is your own emotion as a fan of West Ham?
04:09
I think it's nice when somebody says it to you, because I've been the one who feel as
04:13
if I'm having to say it to make people realise that hey we've done not bad actually.
04:17
But when somebody else tells you it makes you go, oh that's bringing a tear to my glass
04:22
eye a wee bit there, you know what I mean.
04:25
But generally I've got to say that it is, and quite often this year I've had to nearly
04:31
say it to justify it.
04:33
And I think when you look back I hope you'd say, by the way you don't need to justify
04:37
anything with the results West Ham have had over the last three or four years.
04:41
Because if you're journalists who watch and listen and look, you will probably see West
04:49
Ham have not been in this position that often over the years.
04:51
They really haven't been.
04:53
There's debate in some ways, he's a legend, he's not a legend, what do you think going
04:57
out on the block?
04:58
Many West Ham fans think you are a legend.
05:00
Others say maybe not, but what do you think?
05:04
Well the ones who say I'm a like and the ones who say I don't.
05:09
And you know it was amazing last week, there's been a lot of criticism but I've got to say
05:14
the whole of the London stadium stood and applauded.
05:17
Not just me, the players as well last home game.
05:20
I think generally if you're a West Ham supporter, I mean now let me turn it round another way.
05:26
If you were a supporter of another club in the Premier League and you're asked how do
05:30
you think West Ham are doing?
05:32
If you asked Tottenham supporters or you asked Everton supporters or whatever you want to
05:37
ask, I think many of them would turn around and say hey by the way West Ham are doing
05:41
well.
05:42
Other teams haven't had our success.
05:44
So legend, I don't know if I particularly like that word, but I hope that looking back
05:52
folk would say progress at West Ham has been made by the manager.
05:57
Stepping them up, not being a relegation team, not even, well last year we had a bit of difficulties
06:03
but in the main we were fine.
06:07
Sold a record breaking British player.
06:12
And I saw one before as well from Everton.
06:15
So I'm fortunate enough, sometimes as a manager you need to be lucky.
06:21
You need good players.
06:22
I'm lucky I've had people, some good players but I think Pep's got really good players.
06:29
Really it's more about Pep today and Man City really is because they've been outstanding.
06:34
Last one.
06:35
Pep made the point on Friday that his first game in English football was against you here
06:39
and it sort of brought the whole thing full circle in a way.
06:42
He's obviously got fond memories of going against you.
06:44
He seems to think you want to retire and you'll be back.
06:47
Has he got that right?
06:50
Do you want to take him on again?
06:51
At the morning?
06:52
Flipping heck, do I want to take him on?
06:54
I'm waiting till he goes before I come back.
06:58
Look, I have to say that I've got some things come to me already
07:05
but probably not going to make me move at the moment.
07:08
I want to have a break.
07:09
I want to enjoy some time with family.
07:11
I mean we had three weeks off and it sounds, no.
07:14
Ours is a privileged job at times but we had three weeks off.
07:18
We finished on June the 7th.
07:20
We were in London for a couple of days after.
07:21
We were back on the 1st of July to go to Australia.
07:25
It was incredibly short.
07:27
We'd come through the COVID time as well and all the games and different things.
07:31
So it's been a really manic, and actually if you get a chance,
07:35
if you look at the amount of games we've played in the last four years,
07:38
I think there might only be Man City, possibly Liverpool,
07:42
played the same amount of games as us.
07:44
And you might say, well what does that mean?
07:46
It probably means you've been successful in some way.
07:49
For the club it probably means they're taking in more money
07:51
than they've probably ever done as well.
07:54
But for the managers and the players it means it's been pretty hard going.
07:58
OK, thanks everyone.
07:59
Cheers.
08:02
Sorry?
08:05
No, I just spoke to him about 80 minutes before the end.
08:10
No, no, no.
08:11
Just before the end and just congratulated him.
08:14
Thank you.
08:15
Because let's be fair, they've been amazing, haven't they?
08:18
What they do.
08:20
I think everybody watches it and it's so good now.
08:22
Just so good.
08:23
That's the thing, we need people to be really challenging,
08:27
but you're going to have to be some team.
08:29
And I think that's why Arsenal have done a brilliant job this year.
08:32
Cheers, good luck.
08:33
Thanks very much.
08:34
See you again, hopefully.
08:35
How are you?
08:36
How are you?
08:37
I'm good, how are you?
08:38
Yeah, good afternoon.
08:39
I've got to go.
08:40
Thanks, guys.
08:41
Off to sports.
08:42
Yeah.
