New York City Mayor Eric Adams suggested Tuesday that immigrants could help solve the city’s lifeguard shortage because they’re “excellent swimmers,” a remark that sparked outrage among immigrant advocates and confusion among lifeguards.

00:37 But if we had a plan that say you have a shortage of food service workers and those who fit
00:43 the criteria we're going to expedite you.
00:46 If you have the experience that you are a nurse which you have a nursing shortage and
00:53 we will expedite you.
00:54 And it's the same with lifeguards.
00:56 So we have all these eligible people waiting to work with the skills we need to fill the
01:01 jobs but we're unable to allow them to work because bureaucracy is in the way.
