00:00As of 2023, the Global Adult Tobacco Survey found that 4.8 million adults in Malaysia
00:11or 19% smoke tobacco, and 5.8% of adults use electronic cigarettes or vapes.
00:26A notable surge compared to 0.8% in 2011.
00:36That surge of e-cigarettes use is notable.
00:40Furthermore, vapes usage were highest among the 15 to 24 years of age at 8.6%.
00:52We have gotten the act of tobacco product control, but we haven't got our regulation
01:10in place as yet, and we hope to get it as soon as in June if I'm not mistaken.
01:17The Global Adult Tobacco Survey found that Malaysia's increase in e-cigarettes use
01:34among young adults is a concern and requires immediate and reasonable action.
01:43Secondly, the Act of Tobacco Product Control for Public Health 2024, or Act 852,
01:50was gazetted in February 2024, and it is in line with the WHO FCTC,
01:59to restrict the use of tobacco products and reduce the use due to smoking.
02:05However, the enforcement of Act 852, along with the regulations and orders,
02:13will be implemented in June 2024 as a response to the increase.
02:22Vapes, in the Act of Tobacco Product Control, is also a part of the Act of Vapes Control.
02:31We hope that with the regulations and orders, we will be able to handle the increase
02:38in e-cigarettes or vapes among young adults.
02:43I would also like to mention that the prevalence of e-cigarettes among adults is declining.
02:52That's good news.
03:00Thank you.
