00:00 King Charles has cancer, and while he is soon returning to royal duties, many have been
00:05 left with lingering questions about what might happen if the cancer takes his life.
00:09 Would Camilla stay queen?
00:10 Here's what we know.
00:11 With all they have been through over the years, it seems that the royal family is prepared
00:15 for just about anything.
00:17 But with King Charles' latest cancer diagnosis, many wonder what would happen if he were to
00:21 pass away.
00:22 King Charles ascended the throne after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in September
00:27 2022.
00:28 "96 tolls of the bell for every year of the queen's long life."
00:34 Queen Elizabeth knew her days were dwindling, and she had a plan titled Operation London
00:38 Bridge, which detailed what would follow in the days after her death.
00:41 Although Charles immediately became king after his mother's passing, it wouldn't be until
00:45 May of the following year that his coronation would take place.
00:48 The same day Charles became king, Camilla was also crowned queen consort.
00:52 "May thy servant Camilla, who wears this crown, be filled by thine abundant grace."
00:58 The couple were only in their titles for a brief period before it was revealed in February
01:02 2024 that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer.
01:06 If he passes away, we expect Prince William to take over the monarchy.
01:09 But what about Camilla?
01:11 Would she stay queen?
01:12 Would she have any royal role?
01:14 Queen Camilla has gone through her share of royal titles over the years, and it would
01:17 change again after her husband's death.
01:19 Originally, in preparation for Queen Elizabeth's death, Camilla was going to be referred to
01:23 as "Princess Consort."
01:25 However, Elizabeth had shared a statement before her passing, revealing the official
01:29 title that Camilla would become after her death.
01:31 She said,
01:32 "When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and
01:36 his wife Camilla the same support you have given me, and it is my sincere wish that,
01:40 when the time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort, as she continues her own
01:44 loyal service."
01:45 After Elizabeth's death, Camilla did indeed become queen consort.
01:49 However, the title of consort was later dropped during King Charles' coronation.
01:53 As long as he is alive, Camilla will be referred to as queen.
01:56 However, if Charles were to die, Camilla's title would face a slight change.
02:00 The royal would be known as Queen Dowager Camilla.
02:03 Dowager refers to the widow of a king, and was first used by Queen Adelaide in 1830.
02:08 Over the years, we have seen several queens outlive the monarch, most recently Queen Elizabeth's
02:13 mother, although she didn't go by Queen Dowager.
02:15 Still, Queen Dowager Camilla is the reported title she would take after her husband's death.
02:20 Queen Camilla would not take over the throne if King Charles were to die.
02:23 The throne must remain in the royal bloodline, which means Prince William would take on a
02:27 new wave of responsibilities, including much of Camilla's fate.
02:30 Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, told USA Today,
02:34 "The new King William would call all the shots.
02:36 It would be down to him, in accordance to his father's and stepmother's wishes, of course.
02:40 But every aspect of her public and private life would be reviewed."
02:44 Prince William will also decide what Queen Camilla's role in public-facing duties will
02:47 be.
02:48 Over the years, Camilla has devoted much of her life to charitable causes, so if King
02:52 Charles were to pass, many suspect that she would continue to do her charitable work with
02:56 the approval of the new king.
02:58 "God bless the king!"
02:59 "Thank you, your majesty."
03:00 "Thank you, your majesty."
