Leeds locals reflect on nightclubs and nightlife

Following Wire on Call Lane announcing it is to close in June, we hear some of your reflections on nightlife in Leeds.

00:00 I haven't really been to any of the nightclubs, but I've been to a lot of the bars, especially on Cool Lane.

00:05 And I think the nightlife is fab here.

00:08 And in terms of club closures, I think as people are maybe not drinking as much, they're not really going out as much.

00:17 Nightlife in Leeds is great, brilliant, probably one of the best nights.

00:24 Compare it to, like, Liverpool or Manchester.

00:27 There's a lot of queues, like, but nightlife in Leeds is wicked.

00:30 Always make sure you put your jeans on and your shoes.

00:32 The generation of the 18 to 30 year olds now are, as I understand it, kind of a bit less of the binge drinking culture.

00:41 And I think historically that's always gone hand in hand with going to a nightclub.

00:45 And the closure of those kinds of places in Leeds and everywhere is a shame.

00:51 It's a shame for the people that work there.

00:52 It's a shame for the people who live there to not have those options.

00:57 But like everything, I think perhaps those places need to move with the times a little bit.

01:02 There's too many, there's too much of it really.

01:04 Too much drinking, too much nightclubs.

01:06 They're charging four times as much as they would in a pub, three times as much as they would in a pub.

01:11 So, yeah, they need to try and sort that out really.

01:14 Leeds is famous for being, like, very nightlife centred.

01:19 And as an exchange student coming from the Netherlands, which is where I do my degree,

01:23 I do think, like, that nightlife is more, like, there's more things to do.

01:28 And also, like, every night, every, like, even if it's a Monday night, it will be sold out.

01:33 When I used to go out to the clubs, it was a social occasion.

01:37 Nowadays, I think a lot of it is cost.

01:40 Also, holding the venues and getting a licence is, I believe, quite difficult as well these days.

01:48 Younger people seem to go have at home parties and, you know, it's a shame if it does close

01:56 because music is so important to us all.
