00:00 A close community in shock. Code red. The words blasted on Ysgol Dduffrin Amann's tannoy
00:08 this morning. A warning that any pupil, teacher or parent would never expect to hear.
00:14 Two teachers and a teenage pupil were taken to hospital with stab wounds. Their injuries
00:21 are not life threatening. A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder
00:27 and currently remains in police custody. A knife has been recovered in evidence.
00:32 The BBC understands one of the teachers injured in the stabbing is Fiona Elias, a drama and
00:38 Welsh teacher and head of year 7. A code red situation was declared just after quarter
00:44 past 11 this morning, with the school put in lockdown as emergency services attended
00:50 the scene.
00:51 The teachers were telling us to go back to our lessons and stay in the classes where
00:54 we'd be locked in there until further notice. And we were stuck in our classes for about
00:59 three hours, three and a half hours, waiting to find out what would happen. And it was
01:05 a big shock to everyone. Everyone was going crazy, running around, not knowing what was
01:09 going on. And it was just a huge shock to everyone, to be honest.
01:14 A lot of people know each other. It's very rare that you hear of anything like this.
01:19 I don't suppose it's possible anywhere, isn't it?
01:22 My sister and cousin are in the school. My cousin had texted me that there's been someone
01:27 that's been stabbed. I come out, check out, make sure everything's OK. And my cousin has
01:32 said that he's in a locked room. And I'm just waiting for my sister and him to get out now.
01:40 Some students have started to leave the premises of the school now at five past three. Many
01:45 worried parents have been out here for hours, waiting to hear if their children are safe
01:50 as they were kept under lockdown.
01:52 For the head girl, who was at home revising at the time, a huge shock.
01:56 We were quite shocked when we first found out, to be honest. It was quite out of the
02:01 blue. I didn't have any lessons today, so I was having a work from home day, trying
02:07 to finish some deadlines before exams. And one of my friends was inside. She's just trying
02:12 to do a psychology lesson, as if she would any other day. And then they were told code
02:17 red and lockdown.
02:18 And you've never had this sort of...
02:20 No, no, not in the school. We've never really needed it. Obviously, there are precautions
02:27 in place if there was something to happen, like today, which was good. But we've never...
02:31 We've been told of what to do, roughly. But we've never thought that we needed it.
02:37 One local MS has a family member working at the school.
02:41 My brother's a teacher here, and he was one of the first on the scene and had to deal
02:46 with a pretty horrendous situation. And our thoughts are with all the staff who've been
02:53 clearly traumatised by today's events, but also the pupils as well. And I've been speaking
02:57 to parents of some of the younger pupils today, and they have felt scared.
03:04 The First Minister, Vaughan Gething, said he was shocked to hear the news of the incident.
03:08 And it was a deeply worrying time for the school, families and the community.
03:13 The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, posted a message about his shock at the events unfolding
03:18 in Ammanford. He thanked the emergency services and said his thoughts are with all those affected.
03:24 The leader of the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, called the news awful, and also said he was
03:28 thinking of parents, the school staff and all of the students.
03:32 As a council, our priority now is to do all that we can over the coming days and weeks
03:37 to support the pupils and staff in the aftermath.
03:42 Today's events have come as a grave shock to the school community, to Ammanford, Carmarthenshire
03:48 and further afield.
03:49 A day that will stay in the minds of hundreds of pupils, teachers, parents and the wider
03:57 community of Ammanford for a long time. We now know that the injuries of the three who
04:02 were taken to hospital aren't life-threatening, but the school will be closed tomorrow as
04:07 the police investigation continues.
04:09 Thank you.
