00:00 Have yourself a nice visit, partner.
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo and today we'll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Things Fallout
00:08 Newbies Should Know in case you haven't played any of the games.
00:12 Here's your spoiler warning in case you haven't finished the show.
00:15 There was a flaw in the welding just below the chest plate.
00:22 I wonder if they fixed that in this new model.
00:25 10.
00:33 The Alternate History
00:38 From an outsider's perspective, it can seem a bit odd how Fallout is set in the far future
00:43 and yet everyone dresses and talks as if it's still the 50s.
00:46 The show never dives into this facet so allow us to give a general explanation.
00:50 With World War II introducing the power of nuclear technology, American politicians, scientists
00:55 and engineers began entertaining the idea of using nuclear energy in various everyday
01:00 items.
01:01 Of course, this effort never moved forward for a variety of reasons such as the financial
01:05 costs and, well, the obvious safety hazards.
01:09 Fallout explores an alternate history and ultimately led to a world of violence birthed
01:13 from the greed of corporations, most notably Vault-Tec.

01:16 New Vegas
01:27 As you have probably already noticed, fans are in a tizzy over the last shot of the first
01:32 season.
01:33 This is because the city that Lucy's dad sees in the distance is none other than New
01:36 Vegas.
01:37 This city was the main attraction of the 2010 game Fallout New Vegas which put you in the
01:41 shoes of a courier who is intercepted while carrying a mysterious package.
01:45 Along the way, you will meet strange and often questionable characters like Mr. House, the
01:49 CEO of RobCo and the head honcho of New Vegas.
01:52 Yes, that same CEO we saw in Cooper Howard's flashback.
01:56 If you want to go into Season 2 fully informed of the lore, we highly suggest you start playing
02:00 Fallout New Vegas.

02:04 The Viscera
02:08 At first, Fallout can seem like it goes way too hard on the gore and violence, more than
02:17 many other TVMA shows tend to.
02:19 Some would easily dismiss this as the show trying to attain some level of shock value.
02:23 On the contrary, this is very much in line with the games.
02:26 With the exception of the free-to-play Fallout Shelter, every game in the franchise has received
02:30 an M for Mature Rating and excessive violence and gore are the biggest reasons why.
02:34 The games even have perks you can obtain to make your enemies' deaths even more explosive
02:38 while giving you a small bonus in damage across all weapons.
02:42 In our eyes, it seemed everyone in the show was running the bloody mess perk.
02:48 7.
02:52 Ghouls
02:58 As you already learned from the Fallout show, ghouls are humans who are exposed to an obscene
03:02 amount of radiation.
03:03 For better or worse, this has resulted in these people holding extensive lifespans at
03:07 the cost of their skin and mental deterioration.
03:10 Eventually, ghouls can go feral, but as to how long until then?
03:14 Well, this is yet to be answered.
03:16 The show introduces a substance that supposedly prevents a ghoul from turning feral.
03:19 The games, on the other hand, never introduced this or ever gave an explanation as to how
03:24 or when a ghoul turns from civil to feral.
03:26 They just do, and it happens whenever it happens.
03:34 6.
03:36 The Vault-Tech Experiments
03:44 Fallout the show places a heavy focus on Vault-Tech's role in causing the nuclear apocalypse, with
03:48 one scene explaining how they managed to obtain the funds to make and sell vaults to people.
03:53 Yes, all 100+ vaults were made just so a few individuals could play God and create programs
03:58 for their buyers to rebuild society.
04:01 Each game in the franchise hides a handful of these vaults for players to discover, and
04:04 they all harbor secrets that can range from simply odd to the totally messed up.
04:09 One vault may have succumbed to mutated monster plants, while another simply cloned a dude
04:12 named Gary a bunch of times.
04:17 5.
04:19 Stimpaks
04:23 There are a few occasions in the Fallout show where characters use an item called a Stimpak
04:27 to heal their wounds instantly.
04:29 If you were one of the folks who thought it impossible for someone to recover so quickly
04:32 just because of an injection, we can't blame you for thinking so, but that is really how
04:36 Stimpaks work in the Fallout games.
04:39 Stimpaks are made from a mixture of stimulants and healing agents that were made to significantly
04:43 accelerate an organism's regenerative abilities.
04:46 According to John Cassidy in Fallout 2, Stimpaks were made in massive abundance before the
04:50 Great War.
04:51 Yeah, it was a pretty easy way to insert video game mechanics into a story.
04:58 4.
04:59 You're Special
05:03 While we're on the subject of video game mechanics, we should probably address all
05:06 the injuries in Fallout that should have left a character mortally wounded, if not dead.
05:10 From Maximus' bullet wound to Thaddeus' smashed foot, it's hard to believe anyone
05:14 could survive most of the violence inflicted upon them.
05:16 We'd like to believe the show is secretly adhering and making their characters with
05:19 a special system.
05:21 Designed in the games for your character's stats in Strength, Perception, Endurance,
05:24 Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck, we can believe someone like Maximus has a
05:28 high enough stat in Endurance to survive a bullet wound.
05:31 Cooper Howard, aka The Ghoul, probably has high stats in Perception, Charisma, and/or
05:36 Agility which would explain his exceptional gunslinger skills, not to mention his backstory.
05:43 3.
05:45 V.A.T.S.
05:48 One mechanic of the Fallout games that does not make itself known in the show is the Vault
06:00 Tech Assisted Targeting System, or V.A.T.S.
06:03 This allows users to identify and target specific body parts.
06:07 Successfully landing hits can potentially cripple your enemy and inflict critical damage.
06:10 Not once does the show allude to this mechanic in any way, shape, or form.
06:14 This is probably because the game comes to a complete stop when the player activates
06:17 V.A.T.S.
06:18 You gotta keep the show rolling and not get too deep in the mud with the video game stuff.
06:24 2.
06:27 The Enclave
06:28 Towards the end of Fallout's first season, characters talk of factions inflicting fear
06:39 to convince others to believe in their truths.
06:42 One faction that we saw at play in the show's beginning was the Enclave.
06:45 Newcomers may only know of the Enclave in terms of Siggy Wilsak's escape with Dogmeat,
06:49 but booting up Fallout 2 or Fallout 3 will reveal an even more sinister side of the organization.
06:55 Though it looked and sounded patriotic in anthems and its leader's voices, the Enclave
06:59 conducted inhumane experiments while exercising authoritarian practices to control their followers,
07:04 all in the name of creating the "true humans."
07:06 We're anticipating they'll be making their presence more known in Fallout's second
07:10 season.

07:33 Super Mutants and More?
07:39 Oddly enough, Fallout makes a glaring omission when it comes to other enemies and races from
07:42 the games.
07:43 Sure, we saw the Assaultron head in the second episode, but where are the Protectrons or
07:47 Robobrains?
07:48 Perhaps the biggest omission of all were the Super Mutants.
07:51 Even though they were teased once or twice, these green hulks weren't seen in action.
07:55 These folks are just as mysterious as the ghouls on account of their varying levels
07:59 of intelligence.
08:00 You'll come across plenty of hostile Super Mutants, but most of the Fallout games also
08:03 introduce settlements of much more civil and organized Super Mutants.
08:07 But between the Deathclaw's skull and the wide shot of New Vegas that concludes Season
08:11 1, perhaps fan-favorite Super Mutants Marcus and Lily are scheduled to make an appearance
08:15 in Season 2.
08:22 Before we get to Season 2, which Fallout game are you planning to tackle first?
