00:06 A week after news broke that seven babies had died in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Port of Spain General Hospital
00:12 due to a bacterial outbreak, the lead of the infection prevention control unit at the hospital has been sent on administrative leave.
00:22 This decision was taken by the board of the Northwest Regional Health Authority.
00:28 The Ministry of Health is urging the public to take precaution as the rainy season is fast approaching.
00:34 According to the ministry, it is important that people protect themselves against mosquito bites
00:40 as mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya and Zika are transmitted through the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
00:49 Special attention is being paid to pregnant women and their need to take precaution
00:54 as the Zika virus in particular can have a serious impact on the health of their babies.
01:00 This includes a low birth weight, premature birth and fetal abnormalities.
