Researchers Discover First Evidence of Cavemen Living in Lava Tubes

“Cavemen” is a common way to describe humanity’s distant, ancient ancestors and it’s rather apropos. That’s because they often did in fact live in caves, however a new discovery made in Saudi Arabia reveals an interesting little twist in that tale.

00:17 This is one of those caves.

00:18 However, it wasn't formed like most on the planet through erosion and dissolving of certain

00:22 minerals, but rather by lava.

00:25 This is a lava tube from a long dead volcano, and archaeologists say they have found evidence

00:29 of humans moving in around 10,000 years ago.

00:32 However, what's really wild is that they believe our ancestors may have continued living here

00:36 for some 7,000 years.

00:38 That means people could have been occupying the cave as recently as the Bronze Age.

00:42 Only 3,000 years ago, experts initially believed that hyenas were responsible for all of the

00:46 animal and some human remains discovered in the cave.

00:49 More extensive research revealed pieces of ancient cloth, worked wood, and stone structures,

00:55 and pieces of tools within the nearly one mile long cave.

00:57 They have also recently discovered human-made artwork on the walls depicting cattle, goats,

01:02 and sheep, suggesting the cave was used for herding livestock.
