How to avoid ticket resale scams and what to do if you fall victim

Citizens Advice consumer expert Jane Parsons recommends only using websites that have a red, black and white kitemark provided by the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers or members of the Association of Secondary Ticket Agents.

00:00 For those looking to buy a second-hand ticket, how can we ensure that those tickets, that

00:05 we're not going to get scammed and that they are going to be genuine?

00:08 I think it's important to look at the website. I would highly encourage doing it online through

00:14 a website with a credit card. I would look at the website and obviously take a look and

00:19 ensure that it's a legitimate company, that it has a guarantee in place, that it's got

00:26 customer service that you can reach out to. There's policies that they provide such as

00:31 money back guarantees and things of that nature. I think also that the moment you start to

00:37 move away from that and connect with an individual person, somebody you don't know, somebody

00:43 that's asking you to wire them money up front, you don't really know if their prices are

00:50 legitimate. One of the things I always like to tell people is if the price is too good

00:54 to be true, it probably is too good to be true. You just need to be careful. Unfortunately,

01:00 there are some events in the United Kingdom, like the Champions League final is a regulated

01:06 event here in the United Kingdom. There's going to be a gigantic black market for that.

01:11 If you think you have been scammed, is there anything you can do at that stage? What would

01:14 be the advice?

01:16 There are different authorities in the local counties and things that you can report this

01:22 to. There's the trading standards and there's the CMA as well that you could go to the Competition

01:28 Market Authority. I think if you can try to be as conscious about how you transact, and

01:37 again, I think a good way ultimately is going to be through a credit card and somebody that

01:41 can actually monitor the transactions and take care of it. I haven't seen a lot of success

01:47 of people getting their money back, unfortunately. It's just sort of the nature of the beast

01:53 is that there's going to be people out there that can take advantage of that sort of passion.
