00:00 President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. says a Filipino serviceman's death in an attack by a foreign power
00:06 would trigger the Philippines' mutual defense treaty with the United States.
00:10 I think Secretary Austin explained it very well.
00:13 If any Filipino serviceman is killed by an attack from any foreign power,
00:19 then that is time to invoke the mutual defense treaty.
00:22 Philippine and U.S. officials have long been pressed on the specifics of the mutual defense treaty,
00:27 which was signed in 1951.
00:29 American officials previously refused to go into specifics,
00:32 only reaffirming that the treaty extends to both countries' armed forces,
00:37 public vessels, and aircraft anywhere in the Pacific, including the South China Sea.
00:41 In March, several soldiers were injured and a resupply vessel was damaged in the Iungin Shoal
00:46 because of China's water cannons.
00:48 Marcos insisted then such actions by China would not invoke the MDT.
