Iba't ibang binhi at mga estratehiya sa rice farming, pinag-aaralan ng IRRI para matulungan ang mga magsasaka at mapasigla ang produksyon ng pagkain
Transcript
00:00 The International Rice Research Institute is currently studying the benefits of rice
00:08 that are considered to help in the production of food amid the severe effects of aluminum.
00:15 Claisel Pardilla will now explain.
00:17 This is the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna.
00:26 It is one of the largest agricultural research and training facilities in our country.
00:32 It studies the different types of rice and its strategies in rice farming
00:39 to help farmers and farmers to increase their production of food.
00:45 It studies four new drought-resistant rice that are resistant to heat.
00:56 These are DLS, R.I. and DLSR, which are directly planted in rice farms
01:01 that depend on rain and have water from irrigation.
01:05 DLS, R.I. or Transplanted, which are first grown in the field before planted in the field.
01:12 In the initial study of rice, it can live without water for three weeks.
01:19 It does not break easily when it is ground and ground.
01:23 It is long and soft when it is ground.
01:26 This was included in the five-year agreement between the IRI and the Department of Agriculture
01:31 that was made by the BINHI to increase the production of rice
01:36 in the face of the threat of calamities such as El Niño
01:40 while lowering the cost of farming and supporting the demand of consumers.
01:47 One of the ways is DSR. DSR is one way of reducing the cost of farmers.
01:53 If you get transplanted now, under the conventional method of farmers,
02:00 the production cost per hectare is around 60,000 to 70,000 pesos.
02:05 Transplanting, because it needs to accommodate a lot of people,
02:09 the savings will be on the labor as well as on the water.
02:12 The first step of a farmer to succeed in his production is the selection of variety.
02:19 So drought tolerance, the advantage of that is when the area is always subjected to water stress.
02:30 So even if it is stressed, the plant can still survive and yield.
02:40 In the next year or 2026, the target is to finish the research and certify the BINHI.
02:48 Aside from these two types of BINHI,
02:51 the IRI was made and presented to the President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
02:59 This is the Ultra-Low Glycemic Index, a variety of rice developed by the IRI.
03:06 It has a 44 Glycemic Index, which is lower than the 70 GI that we get from the usual varieties of rice.
03:17 This means that when we eat, the glucose in our blood increases slowly,
03:24 or we get less sugar.
03:30 Ultra-Low GI and Low GI rice can help solve our diabetes problem.
03:38 Diabetes is a prevalent problem not only in the Philippines but in the whole world.
03:45 We only have rice that can help lower our blood sugar level.
03:52 With the help of technology, the BINHI of rice with high protein was also formed.
04:00 High protein rice helps muscle growth.
04:05 It helps children who have problems with their studies.
04:12 Protein helps our brain activity.
04:18 Currently, there are 132,000 accessions or different types of BINHI of rice in the rice gene bank of the IRI.
04:27 They are still alive and their genetic identity is in a pure state.
04:38 We can preserve their genetic diversity to sustain our food production and food security of our generation.
04:54 At the same time, it can be utilized for climate change, drought, salinity, flooding, or the incidence of new pests and diseases.
05:08 BINHI is a free distribution of rice to farmers, researchers, and those who want to study the use of technology and best practices.
05:22 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said,
05:25 "It is important for rice production to be active, for the quality of rice to be good,
05:31 and for the sufficient supply and affordable price of rice to be secure."
05:39 With every grain that we harvest, process, and consume,
05:43 we gain the strength and nourishment that we need to continuously drive our lives, families, and nations forward.
