00:00 I never thought I'd ever get divorced. So if there's a simple shame in my life, it's that.
00:04 Gavin Rossdale is getting real about the painful aftermath of divorce
00:09 nearly a decade after his split from Gwen Stefani. The Bush frontman opened up about
00:15 the breakup in the March 20th episode of Amy Robach and TJ Holmes' podcast,
00:20 calling it the one simple shame in his life.
00:23 My clearest, simplest shame is just like that you have an ideal. I came from, my parents were both
00:31 married three times each. You know, it's a very colorful background. And so I never thought I'd
00:37 ever get divorced. So if there's a simple shame in my life, it's that.
00:41 Gavin and the music and fashion icon share three sons. And Gavin noted that his primary concern
00:47 is the boys and how they've coped with the transition over the years. Noting that divorce,
00:51 quote, can be quite debilitating for kids and that his goal is to do what he can to avoid
00:56 letting them down.
00:58 So I feel bad for my kids. That's it.
01:00 Do you know?
01:01 That's the overriding thing. The rest of it is like, it comes with the territory and, you know,
01:09 there's been sort of other things, but that's the most profound, if I could be the most honest,
01:15 that would be the most profound thing of like, wish I could have just figured out a way to
01:21 not have that in their lives. It wasn't fun for me to be from a broken home.
01:25 So Gwen and Gavin announced their split in 2015 after 13 years of marriage. And the No
01:31 Doubt singer went on to tie the knot with her fellow voice coach, Blake Shelton.
01:35 Though Gavin never mentioned Gwen by name and clarified that he believes it's, quote,
01:40 not right to say anything negative about his children's mother.
01:44 He suggested that he does feel a void between them.
01:47 Sometimes I wish that when you see the kids, that sometimes there's a loss, you know,
01:56 it'd be nice if there was a sort of a more connection for the person who made him with me.
02:00 Yes.
02:01 You know what I mean?
02:02 Despite his home life not unfolding how he would have planned, the musician explained that he
02:06 chooses to live in acceptance of the past and is confident that he's an active and engaged parent.
02:12 I go to a lot of events where there's the, you know, the other team, so to speak. And
02:18 I just know that I just feel really proud of myself in my consistency as a father. I know in
02:27 my heart that I'm super consistent. You know, yeah, of course, like everyone does, I'm flawed
02:34 as hell and things didn't go as perfect as I would have liked. But I know that, you know,
02:40 there's an intrinsic bond that's so strong and so present that I have a lot of pride with that.
02:47 Like I'm not, it's unwavering. There's nothing that can, I'm not vulnerable with,
02:51 you didn't spend any time with your kids or you chose, like I've never,
02:53 I've never been on a vacation without my kids.
