00:07 Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh made the announcement today after attending a cabinet

00:12 In a post on X, Yeoh said the government will decline the Commonwealth Games Federation's

00:16 offer to host the 2026 tournament after considering all the implications and aspects of hosting

00:21 the event.

00:23 She said the ministry, along with the second finance minister, met with a delegation from

00:27 the CGF on February 5th.

00:30 The cabinet was also made aware that the £100 million offer from CGF would not be able to

00:35 cover the overall cost of hosting a large-scale sports event.

00:39 The proposal to host the games have been criticized by former sporting greats Karu Selvaratnam

00:44 and Santokh Singh, who warned the government of the potential financial and economic repercussions.

00:49 The Australian state of Victoria withdrew as a host in July last year, citing the increased

00:54 hosting costs from an initial estimate of AUD 2.6 billion to AUD 7 billion.
