00:00 Why did you quit Weight Watchers?
00:02 - Oprah Winfrey has revealed why she left
00:04 her nearly decade-long partnership with Weight Watchers.
00:08 Speaking with Jimmy Kimmel during a recent episode
00:10 of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Oprah told the late night hosts
00:12 that her upcoming special titled,
00:13 "An Oprah Special, Shame, Blame,
00:15 and the Weight Loss Revolution,"
00:17 played a significant role in why she left
00:19 the weight loss company.
00:20 - I decided that because this special
00:25 was really important to me and I wanted to be able
00:27 to talk about whatever I wanted to talk about
00:29 and Weight Watchers is now in the business
00:32 of being a weight health company
00:34 that also administers drug medications for weight.
00:38 I did not want to have the appearance
00:41 of any conflict of interest.
00:43 - Oprah added that she resigned from the board
00:44 and donated all her shares to the National Museum
00:47 of African American History and Culture.
00:49 - Nobody can say, so nobody can say,
00:51 "Oh, she's doing that special,
00:53 "she's making money and promoting her."
00:55 No, you cannot say that.
00:56 - Did the people at Weight Watchers cry when you left?
00:58 - They almost did.
00:59 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:00 I would imagine they wouldn't be that happy.
01:02 - They almost did.
01:03 - Her departure comes a few months after
01:05 she told People Magazine in December
01:07 that she uses weight loss medication.
01:09 Jimmy and Oprah then discussed Oprah's upcoming special
01:11 on ABC and she revealed how she felt
01:13 going back to film and host in front of a studio audience.
01:15 - I haven't done it for 13 years.
01:17 It's 13 years since the Oprah show ended this May.
01:21 And when I walked into the studio to do that,
01:25 I had one of those,
01:27 it was like triggered in a very nice way.
01:29 I mean, I felt like, first of all, the audience
01:33 and having all the cameras and knowing
01:36 that you were doing this for broadcast television
01:38 was really, it was really a good thing.
01:40 It felt good.
01:42 - The seven-year-old author also touched on
01:43 why the topic of weight loss was selected,
01:45 sharing that she spoke with doctors for opradaily.com
01:48 and understood for the first time
01:49 when they said obesity is a disease.
01:52 - Obesity is a disease.
01:55 It is not a disease for everybody who's overweight.
01:58 It is a disease if you carry the gene
02:02 or the propensity for the adipose gene,
02:05 which is the fat gene.
02:06 So not everybody who over drinks is an alcoholic,
02:11 but if you have the gene for it, you develop alcoholism.
02:15 It is the same thing with people who have obesity.
02:20 Not everybody who eats a lot
02:22 and shows up with extra weight has that gene
02:27 or carries that propensity.
02:28 But because it's a big spectrum, it's a spectrum,
02:32 just like everything is a spectrum.
02:34 So, but if you do carry it,
02:36 you will always, always put the weight back on.
02:40 - An Oprah special, "Shame, Blame,
02:42 and the Weight Loss Revolution"
02:43 is set to air Monday, March 18th on ABC
02:45 at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and the next day on Hulu.
