00:31:00 >> Jamie, good to see you as always.
00:31:02 Here we are in the transition period.
00:31:04 The athletes frantically now getting themselves ready to get into their swimming gear.
00:31:09 Just how crazy is it going from the fencing bonus round to the swimming pool?
00:31:14 >> Yeah, it's a transition, it's part of the sport now.
00:31:17 I think actually over the last couple of years,
00:31:19 the athletes have started to manage this really well.
00:31:21 I think we saw when it first came in that a lot of athletes were running across from
00:31:25 the fencing hall.
00:31:26 We're fortunate here at the American Museum here, the university here,
00:31:31 sorry, where they literally just jump out of the fencing hall over there onto poolside.
00:31:36 But yeah, they've got to have a quick change of kit.
00:31:39 And you can see a couple of the British athletes behind us and
00:31:42 a couple of the Italians over there warming up now, ready to go.
00:31:47 It's fast, but I think they're starting to enjoy it.
00:31:50 >> Is there an advantage, do you think, for the athletes in Heat 1?
00:31:52 Because it then gives them a bit more time to prepare for Laser Run.
00:31:55 And obviously they're lower down the standings,
00:31:57 but does that give them some kind of an advantage, do you think?
00:31:59 >> I think that probably that extra sort of two, three minutes,
00:32:02 if you're in the first heat compared to the third heat,
00:32:05 you're probably going to get about five, six minutes difference.
00:32:08 The shooting range doesn't open for anyone,
00:32:10 so you can't really get out there.
00:32:12 But what you can do is get changed, get your head sorted out for the Laser Run.
00:32:16 So you probably do have a little bit of an advantage,
00:32:19 but you're also lower down the rankings, so you're going to need to fight your way up.
00:32:23 And this year, it's Olympic year, so it's pretty tough out there.
00:32:28 I think we saw yesterday the women's semis, and obviously today we've got the men's semis.
00:32:35 So it's a tough year. It's an exciting year.
00:32:38 There's a lot of athletes competing for these points,
00:32:41 all for the main prize of going to the Games.
00:32:45 So we saw some names drop out yesterday in the women's,
00:32:48 and we're going to have a very competitive field today in the men's.
00:32:50 So it's going to be very exciting.
00:32:52 >> Good to chat to you as always. Thank you, Jamie.
00:32:53 >> All right. Thank you.

00:33:47 [ Background noise ]
00:33:54 >> Yeah, we're joined by Christian Camisa.
00:33:56 Christian, good to see you as always, my friend.
00:33:58 We're talking a little bit about what it's like as an athlete
00:34:00 to go from the fencing bonus round stage to a poolside.
00:34:05 What's it like? You've done this recently.
00:34:06 You did this in qualifications, obviously.
00:34:08 How does that transition work for you?
00:34:11 >> Well, actually, it's a bit stressful, you know.
00:34:14 You have not much time to go from one place to another.
00:34:19 But when you compete many times in this kind of format,
00:34:24 you try to find what's the best for you.
00:34:27 And, for example, in my case, I try to change all the stuff quickly.
00:34:33 And before the swimming, I try to do some exercises to keep warm
00:34:39 and to activate myself for the swimming.
00:34:42 But it's hard. It's challenging.
00:34:45 And I like it, actually.
00:34:48 >> If you're competing in Heat 1, does it give you a bit more time
00:34:51 to get trackside to laser run?
00:34:53 Is there an advantage at all to getting in the pool earlier?
00:34:56 >> I think so, because you have more time to rest a little bit
00:35:01 for the laser run and to try to relax a little bit more
00:35:05 before the last event.
00:35:08 So, yeah, I think you have a little advantage, but you know,
00:35:13 it's always better to be in the last series,
00:35:16 because it means you are in the top of the ranking.
00:35:19 >> And just quickly, finally, with the new format,
00:35:21 do you save a bit of energy in the pool?
00:35:23 Do you try to swim a little bit slower so that you save some energy
00:35:26 for the laser run?
00:35:27 >> In my case, I don't, because I'm not the best swimmer.
00:35:31 I mean, I think I have a good swimming, but I'm not the best,
00:35:33 so I need to give my best to try to be as high as possible in the ranking.
00:35:40 And sometimes before I try to save a little bit of energy,
00:35:44 but in my case I found out that it's not something that I just feel,
00:35:52 I don't know, you know, an advantage or something like that.
00:35:55 So I give my best and that's it.
00:35:57 >> Christian, good talk to you as always.
00:35:59 Back to you, Mario, in the commentary box.
00:36:00 >> Thank you.
00:36:02 [ Background noise ]

01:01:16 Joined by Yasser Hefny, head coach for Egypt.
01:01:24 Yasser, always good to talk to you.
01:01:27 Your team is, as always, doing very well.
01:01:30 You have the El Gendy brothers, you have Mahan and Shaban,
01:01:33 all competing very well.
01:01:34 Just talk to us about these preparations going on behind us now,
01:01:37 because they're getting themselves ready for the Laser Run, aren't they?
01:01:40 First of all, again, I'm happy to start the season here in Cairo
01:01:44 with this beautiful sunny weather.
01:01:47 I consider myself lucky to have a group of determined athletes
01:01:53 who are putting all their time and effort and discipline
01:01:57 in what they are doing.
01:02:00 We were kind of unlucky with the groups,
01:02:03 because we have our three top athletes in Egypt
01:02:06 located in the same group.
01:02:08 However, I think that they are in good positions.
01:02:10 They will manage well the race,
01:02:13 try to conserve maybe some energy in the end,
01:02:16 and to make it tomorrow to the final.
01:02:19 What are you expecting from these three Egyptian athletes at the moment?
01:02:22 What is it exactly that they're working on right now?
01:02:25 They're practicing their shooting,
01:02:27 they're trying to get themselves ready for the race.
01:02:29 Exactly. I think at the moment they are doing their warm-up,
01:02:31 they are just making sure that everything is OK,
01:02:33 trying to lower their heart rate,
01:02:35 because you come out from swimming,
01:02:37 and this is a challenge in the new format.
01:02:39 So as much as possible, they calm themselves,
01:02:43 do calm breathing, some kind of drills and speed,
01:02:46 and make sure that everything is going well in the shooting.
01:02:49 The two El Gendy brothers have been locked next to each other
01:02:52 this whole competition.
01:02:54 They're probably going to be pacing themselves
01:02:56 at a fairly similar rate in the later on,
01:02:58 and we'll probably see them together for most of the race.
01:03:01 Would you agree?
01:03:02 I agree 100%. I think El Gendy brothers work with each other as a team.
01:03:05 Not only El Gendy brothers, but Shaaban also is going to be in the loop,
01:03:09 and I think the three of them have shown great teamwork
01:03:12 in Ba'ath, in the World Championships.
01:03:14 In Budapest Indoor, by the way, also, they were working together,
01:03:17 but instead of El Gendy Sr., it was Islam Hamad.
01:03:20 So I think the Egyptian team, they know how to work with each other
01:03:26 very well in the race to get the best out of it.
01:03:28 And in the end, it's a win for Team Egypt,
01:03:30 so it doesn't matter who is the name, it's the team.
01:03:33 We spoke to Mohamed Shaban before the competition started,
01:03:36 and he sort of highlighted the fact that last year
01:03:39 he won a medal at every competition he competed at,
01:03:41 except for Cairo.
01:03:43 Here in Cairo this year, his fencing rank around 19 victories for him.
01:03:47 Not the highest of standards we've seen from him.
01:03:50 Still, he's right at the top.
01:03:52 Is the aim for him to get a medal here?
01:03:54 Look, we try to stay like one step at a time.
01:03:57 We don't really think about the medal.
01:03:59 We think about the techniques, what you should do in every discipline,
01:04:03 and I think the medal can come.
01:04:05 And for us, it's Olympic preparation.
01:04:07 It's more about learning some lessons.
01:04:10 I think he has learned a lot of lessons yesterday in fencing.
01:04:13 And also for him, we should understand that being world number one
01:04:18 and maintaining this position is different than being underdog
01:04:21 or coming from--I don't want to say from nowhere,
01:04:25 because he was a strong guy in the youth,
01:04:28 but coming with no stress, with no pressure.
01:04:31 So I think he's learning this in this competition.
01:04:33 Anything can happen.
01:04:35 Whether he medals or not, I think we are doing great preparation for Paris.
01:04:39 Yes, always a pleasure to speak to you.
01:04:41 Go well, my friend. Back to you, Mario.
01:04:43 -Cheers, man. -Well done. Thank you. Cheers, man.
