Israel's refusal to allow substantial aid into the Gaza Strip has left its population facing famine and life-threatening medical supply shortages.
Transcript
00:00 It was a welcome sight for the embattled people of Gaza. The first ship carrying food aid
00:06 has reached the coast of the Palestinian enclave. Carrying 200 tons of food, the open arms vessel
00:12 could be seen out at sea where it was towed from Cyprus. The World Central Kitchen charity
00:18 which collected the food says it hopes to deliver the aid at a temporary jetty currently
00:22 under construction. The United Nations says five months of war have left around a quarter
00:26 of the enclaves nearly two and a half million people just one step away from famine. But
00:31 humanitarian agencies warn that plans to bring in aid via airdrops and sea cannot satisfy
00:37 the vast need. Meanwhile, as Israel faces increasing pressure to allow in more aid,
00:43 it has tightened security in Jerusalem ahead of prayers for the first Friday in the Muslim
00:47 holy month of Ramadan. Thousands of worshippers are expected to come to the flashpoint compound
00:53 sacred to both Muslims who call it the noble sanctuary and to Jews.
